Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lanthanide elements were first used some thirty years ago in the optical glass industry, followed shortly by their use as NMR shift reagents in organic chemistry. Since then, the application of lanthanides in studies of organic and biochemical systems by use of their NMR and spectroscopic properties has created a rapidly growing interest in the physics and chemistry of these elements. Their use in industrial catalysts, electronic and optical components, high-temperature superconductors, in medicine as X-ray intensifying materials, relaxation agents for imaging techniques or radioisotopes for pharmaceutical applications, have combined with their utilisation in science as probes of a wide variety of phenomena giving them a prominent place in modern science. In this book, leading experts describe the various facets of the application of lanthanides as probes in life, chemical and earth sciences. The aim is to provide guidance to scientists who may wish to use the unique advantages of lanthanide probes in their own fields. To supplement the chapters on the basic concepts of the application of lanthanides, chapters are provided on the basic chemistry of these elements and on the synthetic and analytical aspects of lanthanides and their compounds. The book thus provides a great deal of useful information which will no doubt assist scientists in using these fascinating and valuable elements in their research.

The expanded use of vanadium reflects the complex redox-related chemistry of the element that allows it to form several oxidation states and to stabilise various chemical compounds. From the initial discovery in Mexico through to the modern day, vanadium has presented a challenge and opportunity for chemists. This volume summarises research and industrial development in understanding the chemistry of vanadium and its presence in natural and synthetic materials. This includes a review of vanadium mineralogy and occurrence in nature. The interaction with biomolecules and environmental dispersion is also discussed. Following on from this section the book delves into the application of vanadium in medical use and in power supply as well as issues related to the extraction of vanadium from its primary ores. The book has been developed by an international team of scientists and engineers with specialist interest in vanadium chemistry and use"--

Book Synopsis Biochemistry of the Lanthanides by : Christopher H. Evans
Download or read book Biochemistry of the Lanthanides written by Christopher H. Evans and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By a happy coincidence, the completion of this text coincided with the 200th anniversary of the discovery of gadolinite, the mineral with which the lanthanide story begins. For a group of elements which occur in only trace amounts biologically, and which have no known metabolic role, the lanthanides have spawned a surprisingly large biochemicalliterature. Se rious interest in the biochemical properties ofthese elements can be traced to concerns about the safety of radioactive lanthanides toward the end of World War 11. As recent events at Chernobyl indicate, this concern re mains topical. However, the literature on lanthanide biochemistry pre dates the atomic era, beginning with sporadic, medically motivated studies in the latter part of the 19th century. Much of the present biochemical activity involving the lanthanides centers around their ability to provide 2 important information on the interactions of Ca + with macromolecules and with eukafyotic cells. With the increasing industrial use of the lan thanides, their toxicological properties will need to be examined more closely. Rare earth pneumonoconiosis has already been identified as a disease produced by industrial exposure to lanthanides. Several of the biochemical properties of the lanthanides are of relevance to modern medicine. Already cerium-based ointments are used to treat burn wounds, while paramagnetic lanthanides find application in nuclear magnetic res onance imaging. This book is an attempt to collate and to present in reasonable detail existing knowledge of lanthanide biochemistry before the literature be comes unmanageable.

Book Synopsis Synthesis, Characterization and Reactivity of Ylidyne and μ-Ylido Complexes Supported by Scorpionato Ligands by : Priyabrata Ghana
Download or read book Synthesis, Characterization and Reactivity of Ylidyne and μ-Ylido Complexes Supported by Scorpionato Ligands written by Priyabrata Ghana and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the development of the first open-shell heavier tetrylidyne complexes featuring a tetrel-centered unpaired electron, and unprecedented metallatetrylidynes containing a multiply-bonded, linear-coordinated single heavier tetrel atom embedded between two metal centers. The chemistry of compounds featuring triple bonds of the heavier Group-14 elements Si–Pb with transition metals is a very challenging research area, which combines modern molecular main-group element with transition-metal chemistry, and is of fundamental importance for the understanding of chemical bonding. During the last 15 years, the research in this area has witnessed considerable progress in isolating a series of closed-shell tetrylidyne complexes. However, despite numerous attempts, open-shell tetrylidyne complexes and heavier group 14 element congeners of metallacarbynes and carbide complexes remained inaccessible. In this book, readers will find more about the synthesis, full characterization and reactivity studies of these novel complexes that uncovered a plethora of exceptional products, including a novel m3-silicido complex, the first dimetallasilacumulene with a linear, two-coordinated single silicon atom and the first compounds of planar tetracoordinated silicon (ptSi) (Anti-van’t Hoff-Le Bell Silicon). Readers will also learn about the isolation and full characterization of the first room-temperature stable disilavinylidene, a silicon analogue of the very reactive vinylidenes (R2C=C:), and the first intermetallic plumbylidyne ligand transfer reactions.
