The goal of the symposium was to show direction for further development of catalysts, to find proper methods in the determination of the number of active centres, to investigate the kinetics and the overall mechanism of the catalysis with heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts, to provide with synthetic pathways for new polyolefins and copolymers with different properties, and finally to develop tools and techniques for a comprehensive characterization of the polymers. More than 30 years after the discovery of transition metals and organometallics as catalysts for olefin polymerization these catalysts have not lost their fascination. New impulses for olefinpolymerizations have been brought about by the discovery of the very high cocatalytic activity of alumoxanes instead of aluminumalkyls together with the soluble transition metal compounds of titanocene, zirconocene and hafnocene. Book excerpt: Since 2000, when the Nobel Prize in Chemistry as awarded for conductive polymer research few studies have been performed concerning the conductive capabilities of discrete organometallic compounds. For this project, organometallic compounds were formed specifically with a transition metal included in the structure. Through oxidation and reduction reactions, the variation in the electrical conductivity could allow for an analysis of whether this unique structure would allow for tunability. The goal of this research was to begin with aromatic substituted fulvenes and perform various multistep synthesis processes, utilizing thallium salt intermediates, to produce several disubstituted cyclopentadienyl rhenium complexes. In this project, different rhenium complexes were synthesized accurately and with high yield utilizing methods that were straightforward and generated replicable results. Through melting range analysis, IR spectroscopy, 13C NMR, and 1H -NMR, the identity and purity of these compounds were confirmed.

Book excerpt: The synthesis and characterization of several inversely-polarized phosphaalkenes, including the first ring-expanded inversely-polarized hydrido-phosphaalkene and imidazolidine-based inversely-polarized phosphaalkene-enolate ligand precursors, are herein reported. Coordination of the imidazolidine-based ligands to titanium was studied. Minimal decomposition (6%) of the isolated complex occurred over several days at 60 C. The titanium complexes were explored computationally where it was revealed that there is evidence for the phosphorus atom of the bound ligand to donate an additional pair of electrons to Ti, resulting in a large stabilization of 18.2 kcal mol1. Furthermore, the titanium complex has activity up to 5.64 kgPE mol1Ti h1 in the polymerization of ethylene with little decomposition of the active species over several hours. The polymer produced was high-density polyethylene with an average molecular weight of 17.6 kDa and a Tm of 131 C.

Book excerpt: A number of dimolybdenum quadruply bonded complexes and dirhodium compounds were synthesized and characterized. Additionally a variety of solvent stabilized transition metal complexes were explored as initiators for the polymerization of olefins. The polymerization of cyclopentadiene and methylcyclopentadiene was employed as standard reaction. The results revealed that the metal-metal bond plays no important role in the activity of the examined bimetallic complexes and that the mononuclear complexes show excellent activity, which is in good correlation to their predicted ligand field stabilization energy as a function of the number of d electrons available. Furthermore, the analyses of the MCM-41-supported dimolybdenum species indicated that the quadruple bond is retained and their activity is held in the heterogenization process.
