Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sol-gel method is a powerful route of synthesis used worldwide. It produces bulk, nano- and mesostructured sol-gel materials, which can encapsulate metallic and magnetic nanoparticles, non-linear azochromophores, perovskites, organic dyes, biological molecules, etc.. This can have interesting applications for catalysis, photocatalysis; drug delivery for treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as cancer, Parkinson's and Azheimer's. In this book, valuable contributions related to novel materials synthesized by the sol-gel route are provided. The effect of the sol-gel method to synthesize these materials with potential properties is described, and how the variation of the parameters during the synthesis influences their design and allows to adjust their properties according to the desired application is discussed.

Book excerpt: Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in Organic Solvents discusses recent advances in the chemistry involved for the controlled synthesis and assembly of metal oxide nanoparticles, the characterizations required by such nanoobjects, and their size and shape depending properties. In the last few years, a valuable alternative to the well-known aqueous sol-gel processes was developed in the form of nonaqueous solution routes. Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in Organic Solvents reviews and compares surfactant- and solvent-controlled routes, as well as providing an overview of techniques for the characterization of metal oxide nanoparticles, crystallization pathways, the physical properties of metal oxide nanoparticles, their applications in diverse fields of technology, and their assembly into larger nano- and mesostructures. Researchers and postgraduates in the fields of nanomaterials and sol-gel chemistry will appreciate this book’s informative approach to chemical formation mechanisms in relation to metal oxides.

Book excerpt: The mild reaction conditions of the sol-gel process allow incorporation of an inorganic component into organic materials, making it very favorable for the synthesis of organicinorganic nanocomposite materials. However, researchers still strive to produce materials with the unique properties of inorganic compounds which also possess the mechanical properties of organic polymers. We have developed several sol-gel derived nanocomposite silicate materials using both inorganic precursors and organic-inorganic precursors, which show superior mechanical properties due to nanoscale structural reinforcement. The materials reported were developed in three separate investigations, although the synthesis techniques are relatively similar. STRUCTURAL EVOLUTION OF PARTICLE REINFORCED ORGANIC-INORGANIC WATER-BASED NANOCOMPOSITE MATERIALS We present for the first time, the use of Al(ClO4)3, an effective catalyst for synthesis of 3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) - based nanocomposite materials via sol-gel chemistry. Aluminum perchlorate (Al(ClO4)3) simultaneously serves as catalyst for epoxy polymerization and methoxysilane hydrolysis at room temperature. Catalytic effects of Al(ClO4)3 were demonstrated through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of precursor sols and structural investigation of resulting films by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Our method incorporates nanophase particulate reinforcement; Ludox® TMA colloidal silica, which possesses surface silanols (Si-OH), further activate the epoxy groups and expedite organic polymerization. The silica nanoparticles chemically link with the organic-inorganic network through Si-O-Si and Si-O-C bonds. Nanoparticles reinforcement serves to strengthen the network and enhance mechanical properties such as microhardness and abrasion resistance while maintaining the unique optical properties of these materials. Furthermore, the synthesis is water-based, providing for an environmentally friendly synthetic route.

Book excerpt: Materials with nanometer size particles exhibit unique chemical and physical properties. In particular, nanocomposite materials, composed of nanometric metal and metal oxide particles embedded in vitreous matrices, present a variety of interesting magnetic, electric and catalytic properties, that are strongly size-dependent. Among the different preparation methods which can be used to obtain this kind of materials, the sol-gel process is particularly interesting because it is affected by several parameters which allow a versatile control of the structural, textural and chemical properties of the final products. The present volume focusses on the preparation of metal-silica and metal oxide-silica (Me=Ni, Fe, Zn) nanocomposites by the sol-gel method and the characterization of their structural and magnetic properties.

Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on porous monolithic materials that are not in the forms of particles, fibers, or films. In particular, the synthetic strategy of porous monolithic materials via the sol–gel method accompanied by phase separation, which is characterized as the non-templating method for tailoring well-defined macropores, is described from the basics to actual synthesis. Porous materials are attracting more and more attention in various fields such as electronics, energy storage, catalysis, sensing, adsorbents, biomedical science, and separation science. To date, many efforts have been made to synthesize porous materials in various chemical compositions—organics, inorganics including metals, glasses and ceramics, and organic-inorganic hybrids. Also demonstrated in this thesis are the potential applications of synthesized porous monolithic materials to separation media as well as to electrodes for electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and Li-ion batteries (LIBs). This work is ideal for graduate students in materials science and is also useful to engineers or scientists seeking basic knowledge of porous monolithic materials.

Book excerpt: This book presents wet chemical sol-gel and hydrothermal methods for 1D oxide nanostructure preparation. These methods represent an attractive route to multifunctional nanomaterials synthesis, as they are versatile, inexpensive and, thus, appropriate for obtaining a wide range of oxide materials with tailored morphology and properties. Three specific oxides (SiO2, TiO2, ZnO) are discussed in detail in order to illustrate the principle of the sol-gel and hydrothermal preparation of 1D oxide nanostructures. Other oxides synthesized via this method are also briefly presented. Throughout the book, the correlation between the tubular structure and the physico-chemical properties of these materials is highlighted. 1D oxide nanostructures exhibit interesting optical and electrical properties, due to their confined morphology. In addition, a well-defined geometry can be associated with chemically active species. For example, the pure SiO2 nanotubes presented a slight photocatalytic activity, while the Pt-doped SiO2 tubular materials act as microreactors in catalytic reactions. In the case of titania and titanate nanotubes, large specific surface area and pore volume, ion-exchange ability, enhanced light absorption, and fast electron-transport capability have attracted significant research interest. The chemical and physical modifications (microwave assisted hydrothermal methods) discussed here improve the formation kinetics of the nanotubes. The ZnO nanorods/tubes were prepared as random particles or as large areas of small, oriented 1D ZnO nanostructures on a variety of substrates. In the latter case a sol-gel layer is deposited on the substrate prior to the hydrothermal preparation. Using appropriate dopants, coatings of ZnO nanorods with controlled electrical behavior can be obtained.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nd doped TiO2 nanostructured thin films were prepared by sol-gel technique on quartz and Si substrates using TiCl4 precursor. As-deposited amorphous films were annealed to form anatase phase in the thin films. The film grain size increased with annealing temperature. Above 800 deg C, rutile began to segregate and the grain size decreased slightly. The photodegradation of 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) was studied. Doping TiO2 with Nd(+3) reduced the photodegradation time. The difference in the ionic radii of Nd(+3) and Ti(+4) and the oxygen affinities of Nd and Ti were responsible for this effect. These differences help promote electron trapping, thereby increasing the lifetime of the holes which are responsible for the oxidation of 2-CP.
