Book excerpt: Reported in Chapter 2 of this thesis is the reliable and tolerant synthesis of a small library of pyrazole and triazole heterocycles. This synthesis was achieved in two steps in good yields from the reaction of acetophenone and benzamide derivatives with dimethyl formamide-dimethyl acetal followed by a cyclization with hydrazine. Also reported is the synthesis and characterization of their corresponding scorpionate ligands. Preliminary coordination chemistry was done with a variety of lanthanide metals and was studied by standard spectroscopic methods as well as variable temperature 1H NMR, which revealed that Curie-Weiss behaviour was followed for these complexes in solution. An X-ray crystal structure of a nine co-ordinate ytterbium metal centre with eight nitrogen atom (four pyrazole, four pyridine) donors and one chloride atom was obtained, which may have been a product of decomposition during crystal growth. The bond lengths of this structure were compared with other lanthanide complexes of similar structural motifs. This comparison supported the theory of decomposition as the pyridine nitrogen atom-ytterbium bond lengths were longer than the average ytterbium-nitrogen atom bond length.

Book excerpt: This dissertation covers the synthesis and characterization of three unique classes of lanthanide materials produced exclusively by the addition of sodium azide (NaN3) into solution based lanthanide reactions. The products were achieved through transmetallation and redox reactions between rare earth chalcogenolate reagents (Lnx(EPh)y), NaN3 and elemental chalcogenides (E = O, S, Se, Te). The products displayed atypical structural and physical properties including; unique coordination geometries, high nuclearities, tunable detonation/deflagration, strong NIR emissions, and unexpected magnetic ordering behaviors. The introduction of NaN3, Na2O, Cd, elemental Se and Te into Ln (EPh)2 and Ln(EPh)3 pyridine (py) solutions led to the production of (py) 2Na2(EPh)2 and 5 structurally distinct azide encapsulated rare earth clusters; (Py)10Sm6O2(N3)16Na2, (py)8Ln6O2(N3)12(SePh)2, (py)10Ln6O2(Se2) 2(N3)10 (Ln=Er, Ho), and (py)16Sm8Se(O2)Na2(Te2)6(N3)8. Each system was encapsulated by a variety of azide bridging moieties, while exhibiting a [Ln]/[N3] dependent correlation with detonation and deflagration temperatures.! The inclusion of NaN3 in Ln(SePh)3 pyridine solutions with elemental Se, led to the discovery of the (py)16Ln17NaSe18(SePh)16; (Ln= Ce, Pr, and Nd). Emission studies of the Nd17 analogue, revealed a 35% quantum efficiency for the 4F3/2 - 4I11/2 transition (1070 nm emission), and a near solid state emission intensity for the 4F3/2 [right arrow] 4I15/2 transition (1822 nm emission). The novel Eu(EPh)4Na2·2DME; (E=S, Se), specimens were synthesized by the combination of Eu(EPh)2 with NaN3 in dimethoxyethane (DME). The europium coordination sphere was solvent free and resembles the coordinations of europium monochalcogenides (EuE). Comparative structural analysis and magnetic susceptibility studies of the Eu3+ product, ((py)6Eu2(?4-S2)2(OC6F5)2) revealed paramagnetic ordering at low temperature for Eu(EPh)4Na2·2DME; (E=S, Se), while ferrimagnetic ordering was found for ((py)6Eu2(?4-S2)2(OC6F5)2). All materials exhibited antiferromagnetic ordering above 50 K, while a Curie temperature of 18.0 K was determined for ((py)6Eu2(Îơ2-S2)2-(OC6F5)2).

Book excerpt: Twelve new unsymmetrical diglycolamide (UDGA) ligands have been synthesized as solvent extraction reagents for trivalent lanthanide ions from highly acidic nitrate media. The asymmetry in the extractant design arises from attaching nonpolar alkyl chains (hexyl, octyl, 2-ethylhexyl, 3,7-dimethyloctyl) to one amide group and smaller, more compact, cyclic alkyl groups (pyrrolidinyl, piperidinyl, morpholino) to the other amide moiety. This structural variant of a well-known cation receptor reduces the interfacial footprint of the extractant and is designed to increase the rate of phase transfer of the target cations. The partitioning of 152,154Eu(III) between aqueous phases of varying nitric acid concentrations (0.01-3 M) and a 0.05 M UDGA in 5% v/v 1-octanol/n-dodecane organic phase was measured radiometrically and compared to the symmetrical diglycolamide, N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyldiglycolamide (TODGA). All twelve UDGA ligands quantitatively extracted trivalent Eu(III) cations from 1 M nitric acid. Separate solvent extraction slope analysis experiments were used to determine the stoichiometry and conditional extraction equilibrium constant (K'ex) of the extracted Eu-UDGA complex in 5% v/v 1-octanol/n-dodecane. The metal-ligand complex stoichiometry in the extracted species was found to be approximately 1:3 for the UDGA ligands and TODGA while the conditional extraction equilibrium constants ( K'ex) decreased with increasing ligand size and alkyl chain branching. Luminescence spectroscopy investigations established the relative stability and stoichiometry of the complexes in acetonitrile. The overall trends in the conditional extraction equilibrium constant ( K'ex) and the 1:3 conditional stability constant (beta 103) followed a similar pattern, indicating a correlation between complex stability and ligand structural features.

Book excerpt: Metal chalcogenides possess a wide range of interesting chemical and physical properties, including low-temperature superconductivity, semiconductivity, ionic conductivity, intercalation, and optical properties. To expand chalcogenides beyond their traditional applications, it is desirable to generate novel chalcogenide materials with multifunctionality for uses in the areas of catalysis, separation, ion exchange, and gas storage by modifying the framework architectures and tuning the chemical components. The primary focus of my Ph. D. study is to design and synthesize chalcogenide materials with new structures and interesting multifunctional properties. The large variety of chemical compositions and structures make it possible to tune the properties, such as band gap, luminescence, pore size, surface area, and thermal stability. Most of the synthesis has been carried out using solvothermal reactions refs in pyrex tube or teflon lined autoclaves. Novel three-dimensional (3D) microporous chalcogenides constructed on building units [M-Sn-Q]n- (M=Zn, Cd, Mn; Q=S, Se) have been obtained. Their structures have been characterized by both single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction methods. Optical diffuse reflectance experiments have indicated that these compounds are semiconductors with intermediate band gaps between 1.5~2.9eV. The successful doping/substitution of 5%~20% Mn and Se in the [Zn-Sn-S]n- structure allows systematic tuning of the band gap and optical properties of this semiconductor compound. All compounds show a high thermal stability over 400°C. Our studies also show that the guest molecules and cations residing in the open frameworks are exchangeable. Another novel two dimentional ion sulfide [Fe(en)3]·[Fe16S20]·en compound was synthesized as well. UV-Vis reflectance spectroscopy showed a very low absorption coefficient and small band gap ~0.5eV. Doping/substitution experiments with Co and Mn replacing Fe were carried out and the properties will be discussed. In summary, this work has provided examples of rational synthesis and property tuning of new functional materials with new structure types, and demonstrated structure-property correlation in metal chalcogenide based compounds. It has provided useful information for the future developments of material synthesis with desired multifunctionality.
