Book excerpt: Although, carbon is only one of one hundred plus elements, the polymer science lit erature consists primarily of studies on carbon based polymers. In part, this reflects the varied feedstock sources and in part, the type of bonds and bond forming reactions avail able to form organic polymers that are not available to the inorganic and organometallic chemist. However, recent intense interest in polymers with novel optical, electronic or magnetic properties or polymers that can serve as precursors to ceramic, semiconductor, metallic or superconductor materials has served as a driver for the development of novel synthetic routes and characterization techniques that have launched many new inorganic and organometallic oligomers and polymer systems. The following chapters represent an effort to provide an overview of several new and continuing areas of development in inorganic and organometallic polymer science. This book represents the second in a series of books we have edited on inorganic and organometallic polymer chemistry (1. Transformation of Organo-metallics into Common and Exotic Materials, NATO ASI Series Vol 141. 3. Inorganic and Organometallic Polymers with Special Properties, NATO ASI Series in press). In this series, we attempt to develop, for the reader, an understanding of the breadth, depth and potential of inorganic and organometallic polymer science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Chapter 1, the history of conducting polymers, especially polythiophene and its derivatives, was briefly reviewed. Different approaches of structural modifications to afford small bandgap polythiophene derivatives were discussed. The emergence of metal-containing polymers (metallopolymers) as functional materials has attracted tremendous attention around the world. Introduction of metals into thiophene-based oligomers and polymers, whether the backbone or the side chain of the pi-conjugated framework, the electronic, optical, or magnetic properties of the material are expected to be significantly affected by metals through various mechanisms. Synthesis methods to prepare poly(thienylene vinylene) were also briefly reviewed in this chapter. In Chapter 2, the motivations and objectives were briefly discussed. Two structurally similar compounds, thieno[3,4-d]-1,3-dithiole-2-thione and thieno[3,4-d]-1,3-dithiol-2-one are the starting point of this project due to their unique carbondithiolate structures, which may lead to metal-dithiolate coordinated oligomers or/and polymers, or polymers crosslinked by DTTTF units. For the preparation of monomers, six types of reactions were systematically studied with focus on thieno[3,4-d]-1,3-dithiol-2-one to prepare different direvatives. Different halogenated compounds, Mannich bases, chloromethylated compounds, a number of nucleophilic substituted derivatives and a DTTTF analogue from chloromethylated compounds were successful synthesized. All products were fully characterized through 1H and 13C-NMR, FT-IR, ESI-TOF high resolution mass spectroscopy. The halogenated products were prepared through halogensuccinimides or other halogenation reagents such as Br2, I2. These halogenated compounds may be candidates to prepare homopolymer and/or copolymers bearing carbondithiolate structures by cross-coupling reactions. 4,6-Bis(chloromethyl) thieno[3,4- d]-1,3-dithiol-2-one and its nucleophilic derivatives may be good monomers for the two-step precursor polymerization to achieve fully conjugated poly(thienylene vinylene) derivatives and even metallopolymers with metal-dithiolate coordinations. Attempted polymerization reactions to homopolymers and copolymers through directly C-C coupling, such as transitional metal catalyzed cross-coupling, Stille reaction, and Ullman reaction, et al. were discussed in the beginning of Chapter 3. Base-promoted and acid-promoted polymerizations were attempted to afford soluble precursor polymers with carbondithiolate structures. However, all the symmetrical thiophene derivatives did not successfully yield processable precursor polymers; asymmetrical monomers generated some possibilities for future study. Synthesis of thiophene-based oligomers, such as dimmers (dithienyl compounds), trimers (trithienyl compounds), and heptamers were also explored in chapter 3, followed by preparation of thiophene-based copolymers through Wittig-Horner reactions. Properties of oligomers, especially trimers were well characterized by NMR, FT-IR, and ESI-TOF. Several conjugated DTTTF derivatives from trimers were prepared by the triethyl phosphite cross-coupling method. These conjugated DTTTF compounds posses some unique properties. They are stable in solid forms, but may be doped in solution forms. The copolymers were characterized by elemental analysis, and FT-IR. UV-Vis spectra of copolymers show their bandgap values are aroud 1.87eV (UV edge calculation). In the Experimental chapter, all reaction conditions of preparation of new annulated thiophene derivatives and oligomers were documented in details. Physical and spectroscopic properties of these new compounds were also presented in this chapter. Key words. polythiophene, oligomer, conjugation, synthesis, characterization, DTTTF, metallopolymer.

Book excerpt: The quest for the construction of artificial enzyme models able to mimic the activity of metalloenzymes is lucrative research filed for many chemists. There have been considerable efforts in design and synthesize various bio-mimetic systems to achieve the enzymatic activity. One such enzyme mimicking system is to use of macromolecular environment such as polymers with the metal active sites has attracted tremendous interest and resulting in the formation of metal-containing polymers/metallopolymers. We believe that by integrating metal ions within the polymer frameworks using metal-ligand coordination will offer greater control over the choice of various functional groups, control of hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity and secondary coordination network offered by the polymer frameworks for the metal ions. These metal-containing polymers will be expected to serve as the better enzymatic models. The aim of this dissertation is to study the polymer promoted catalytic activity of novel metal-containing polymers. By taking the advantages of polymer synthesis methods, particularly, controlled free radical polymerization methods such as RAFT and ATRP, and post-polymerization methods, we prepared well-defined polymers with the desired functional groups. The metal ions were incorporated into the polymer network via metal-ligand coordination under dilute conditions to induce polymer cross-linking to yield metal-containing single chain polymer nanoparticles (M-SCNPs). These soft nano-sized polymeric nanoparticles were then used as enzymatic model systems for catalysis applications. In chapter 2 of this dissertation work, we explored the use of metallofoldamers containing Ni-thiolate co-factors in a folded polymer framework for the selective photoreduction of CO2. The catalysis results indicated that polymer framework promoted the activity of Ni active sites towards selective CO2 reduction to CO under photochemical conditions. In chapter 3, we demonstrated that Cu-containing SCNPs promoted the activity towards the selective hydroxylation reactions. The catalytic activity towards phenol substrates catalyzed Cu-SCNPs was studied and the results indicate that the selectivity was largely influenced by the dynamics of the folded polymer backbone. The unsaturation of coordination sites to Cu ions limits the cooperative catalysis. We solved this problem by designing a random copolymer having well-defined ligands with a coordination site for Cu-ions. We studied the polymer promoted cooperative O2 activation and how the catalytic efficiency was influenced by polymer flexibility and the mole fraction of Cu sites in copolymers which is described in chapter 4. Further extension of this work by introducing hydrophobic microenvironment for the Cu sites and how it will affect the catalytic activity was demonstrated in chapter 5.

These compounds are increasingly being used as precursors to new materials, rather than as materials in their own right. The field of applications are commonly catalysis and as reagents for organic synthesis. The objectives of the research decribed in this thesis are to synthesize multi-nuclear metal-containing polymers and dendrimers and study their potential utility in the field of catalysis.

Book excerpt: This work focuses on two research directions: the total synthesis of natural products hitorins A and B and the synthesis of porous metallopolymers/ metallooligomers and study of their properties. Nature has a good understanding and makes good use of cascade reactions to generate complex natural structures. The synthesis of hitorins A and B employed a radical cascade starting from a rare intermolecular alkoxy radical-olefin coupling reaction in our biomimetic synthetic strategy. A radical clock experiment was designed to reveal the mechanism for the key alkoxy radical-olefin coupling cascade. microporous materials have many applications in diverse areas including gas separation, electronic devices, and energy storage. In this work, a series of porous, linear (non-network) metallopolymers termed “metallopolymers of intrinsic microporosity” (MPIMs) were discovered. These polymers exhibit intrinsic microporosity stemming from backbone contortion introduced by the polymers’ main-chain metal ions. Spectroscopic analysis provided evidence for mixed valency between neighboring ferrocenyl units. However, direct measurement of electronic characteristics was hindered by the poor solubility of this class of MPIMs, although copolymers with pendant groups affixed to the phenyldiacetylene units were synthesized to simultaneously maintain porosity and introduce adequate solubility. Ferrocene-containing metalloligomers were obtained with precise degrees of polymerization, which are expected to have even better solubility compared to the analogous MPIMs. Further exploration of porosity provided a better understanding of factors leading to porosity by comparing monomers, short oligomers, long oligomers, and polymers between gas sorption analysis and computation. More exploration of optical and electronic properties is ongoing.

Book excerpt: The controlled assembly of large nano-molecular clusters is a great challenge since the reliable assembly of new architectures is significantly important for not only exploring the fundamentals of structures but also extending the range of new materials, properties and devices. It suggests that the reliable organic and inorganic synthesis of gigantic molecules may define a new age in nanoscience.1 In our group, we utilize Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes (POSS) and Polyoxometalates (POMs) to construct the giant molecules. On one hand, POSS are of conformational rigidity with the approximate size of 1 nm, which possess a good thermal stability and versatile surface chemical functionalities. On the other hand, POMs are the discrete metal-oxygen (also some hetero-atoms) anionic clusters that are formed by some early-transition metals (e.g. Vanadium (V), Molybdenum (Mo), tungsten (W)) in their high oxidation state.2 The surface charge property of POM clusters is quite so intriguing for researchers that a large library of POMs-based hybrid materials could be imagined. In my project, POMs and POSS connected by a series of covalent bonds are carried out to study its structure both in bulk and thin film.

Book excerpt: Research on metal-containing polymers began in the early 1960's when several workers found that vinyl ferrocene and other vinylic transition metal TI -complexes would undergo polymerization under the same conditions as conventional organic monomers to form high polymers which incorporated a potentially reactive metal as an integral part of the polymer structures. Some of these materials could act as semi conductors and possessed one or two dimensional conductivity. Thus applications in electronics could be visualized immediately. Other workers found that reactions used to make simple metal chelates could be used to prepare polymers if the ligands were designed properly. As interest in homogeneous catalysts developed in the late 60's and early 70's, several investigators began binding homogeneous catalysts onto polymers, where the advantage of homogeneous catalysis - known reaction mechanisms and the advantage of heterogeneous catalysis - simplicity and ease of recovery of catalysts could both be obtained. Indeed the polymer matrix itself often enhanced the selectivity of the catalyst. The first symposium on Organometallic Polymers, held at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in September 1977, attracted a large number of scientists interested in this field, both established investigators and newcomers. Subsequent symposia in 1977, 1979, 1983, and 1987 have seen the field mature. Hundreds of papers and patents have been published.
