This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced polymeric materials with specialized properties are of great interest. Block and graft copolymers are the most demanded advanced materials since they display combined physical and mechanical properties. Because of their diverse macromolecular structures, they may possess novel characteristics required for many high-tech applications. Therefore, engineering macromolecular architectures is one of the major goals in polymer chemistry. Controlled polymerization methods appear to be the most powerful and versatile tools in achieving this goal. in the present work, macromolecular chains of various chemical compositions were ~ assembled in original topologies by combination of Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) or Ring-opening Polymerization (ROP) with photoinduced radical or radical promoted cationic polymerizations. These macromolecular architectures involve block, graft, block-graft, and brush type copolymers as well as miktoarm star copolymers and hyper-branched polymers... For this purpose, end-chain, mid-chain or side-chain mono- or bi- amino- or N;N- dimethylamino- functional precursor polymers were prepared either by A TRP or ROP. Subsequently, these prepolymers served as macromolecular co-initiators in photoinduced radical or promoted cationic polymerizations. For the preparation of diblock copolymers, N,N-dimethylaniline end-functional polystyrenes (PSt) with well-defined structures and low polydispersities were synthesized by A TRP of styrene in bulk at 11 O0C using 4-( dimethylamino )benzyl 4- (bromomethyl) benzoate as initiator in conjunction with a cuprous complex, Cu(I)Br/bipyridine. These polym'ers were further used in block copolymerization with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and cyclohexene oxide (CHO) via photoinduced radical and radical promoted cationic polymerization routes, respectively, as represented by (1) and (2). in the former case, macroradical generation was achieved with benzophenone sensitizer by photoexcitation followed by hydrogen abstraction from amino end groups. A visible light initiating system has been utilized in the radical promoted cationic polymerization of CHO. The system involves a xanthene dye (Erythrosin B) as the sensitizer, an aromatic N;N-dimethylamino group and diphenyl iodonium hexafluorophosphate as the radical source and radical oxidizer, respectively. While pure block copolymers were obtained in the free radical route, the free radical promoted cationic polymerization yielded both block and homopolymers...

Book excerpt: A mission to manage ever increased energy demands and reduce carbon foot print has challenged scientists and engineers to develop new materials with superior characteristics. In this scenario, lithium-ion batteries have been the dominating technology for not only applications in consumer electronics but also are essential for clean energy storage. On the other hand, the capture and separation of CO2 [carbon dioxide] in power generation and in industrial processes is considered to be a key to reduce the carbon footprint. Living anionic polymerization along with controlled polymerization techniques has realized the preparation of a wide variety of functional polymers with tunable properties. In this dissertation, we will present preparation of hetero-atom containing polymers using various polymerization techniques and post-polymerization modifications. We also want to explore: how can we employ these functional polymers to solve the current challenging problems? In chapter 1, we present the review of the state of the art polymer electrolytes for next-generation lithium ion batteries followed by the introduction of current CO2 [carbon dioxide] fixation and CO2/N2 [carbon dioxide/ nitrogen] gas separation techniques. In chapter 2, we discuss the synthetic methodology and experimental techniques including living anionic polymerization using high vacuum techniques, cationic ring opening polymerization techniques and hydrosilylation. In chapter 3 and chapter 4, we discuss the preparation of ambipolar polymer electrolytes and polymerized ionic liquids based on polydimethylsiloxane. The characterization, lithium ionic conductivity and structure-properties relationship are discussed. Chapter 5 describes a novel method to obtain living anionic polymerization of 2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline. Through our modified synthetic conditions, block copolymers of IPOx are also prepared and microphase separations are studied. In chapter 6, we investigate the synthesis gold nanoparticle using PIPOx as template. The size of god nanoparticles will be analyzed using TEM [transmission electron microscopy] and AFM [atomic force microscopy]. Furthermore, the interactions between PIPOx [poly(2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline)] template and AuNPs [gold nano particles] is studied using XPS [X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy]. In chapter 7, we introduce the preparation of amidoxime-modified PTMSP [poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne)] and its applications on CO2/N2 [carbon dioxide/ nitrogen] separation. Finally, the research in this dissertation is summarized and future work is presented in chapter 8.

Book excerpt: "A primary amine functional monomer, IDBA (3-isopropenyl- [alpha], [alpha] -dimethylbenzylamine) was synthesized with minimal purification steps, high yield (up to 76%) and good conversion (98%) from a cheap, commercially available precursor m-TMI (3-isopropenyl-[alpha],[alpha]−dimethylbenzyl isocyanate). Amine functional polymers of IDBA, MA (methyl acrylate) and AN (acrylonitrile) were then synthesized using 2,2′-Azobis(2-methylpropionitrile (AIBN) as an initiator in dimethylformamide (DMF). These polymers were reacted with poly(ethylene) grafted with maleic anhydride (PE - MAn) in a miniature conical counter rotating twin screw extruder (Haake Minilab) at a 20 wt% of the amine functional polymer and 40 wt% of the poly(ethylene) loading at 140 °C. Scanning electron microscopy (for particle size), differential scanning calorimetry (for Tm) and thermogravimetric analysis techniques (for Tg) were used to characterize the properties of the polymers and blend. This blend was compared to a non - amine functional polymer blend with AMS ([alpha] - methyl styrene) replacing IDBA in the formulation. The SEM results showed smaller particles and hence better blending of the amine - functional polymer with poly(ethylene). This promising blend could be used to improve the barrier material properties of poly(ethylene). Furthermore, oxazoline functional styrene/acrylonitrile (SAO) polymers with sufficiently high conversions (59%) and low polydispersity Mw/Mn (1.32) were synthesized using nitroxide mediated polymerization (NMP) with NHS - BlocBuilder. It was demonstrated that NMP can be used to synthesize living and controlled oxazoline functional polymers. These polymers were thermally stabilized by removing the N-tert-butyl-N-[1-diethylphosphono-(2,2-dimethylpropyl) nitroxide] (SG1). Differential scanning calorimeter (for Tm) and thermogravimetric analysis techniques (for Tg) were used to characterize thermal properties of the polymers. The SAO polymers were then mixed with poly(ethylene) grafter with acrylic acid (PE - AA) in a 20 wt% loading at 112 °C using a technique called solvent casting. SEM results indicated insufficient mixing, which is likely due to the extremely low melting point of the PE - AA used. This suggested that further blending evaluation was necessary." --

Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis was to prepare thermoresponsive PEG-based homopolymers and copolymers by combination of cobalt-mediated catalytic chain-transfer polymerization (CCTP) and thiol-ene "click" chemistry and prepare well-defined glycopolymers via "living" polymerization and "click" chemistry. The effect of different catalysts for the nucleophilic mediated thiol-ene reaction was investigated using model compounds, both monomers and oligomers obtained by CCTP. Different catalysts, including pentylamine and hexylamine (primary amines), triethylamine (tertiary amine), and two different phosphines, dimethylphenylphosphine (DMPP) and tris(2-carboxyethyl) phosphine (TCEP), were investigated in the presence of different thiols. The optimum reaction conditions for nucleophile mediated thiol-ene click reactions were investigated. Thermoresponsive PEG-based homopolymers and copolymers of OEGMEMA obtained by CCT were modified using thiol-ene click chemistry with a variety of different functional thiol compounds to yield functional thermoresponsive polymers in high yield. The effect of different solvent systems for based catalyzed thiol-ene reaction was investigated in the presence of different functional thiols. The ATRP polymerization of TMS-PgMA and TIPS-PgMA and ROP polymerization of aliphatic polyester were investigated. A maleimide functional initiator was used in order to achieve post conjugation of nanoparticles for drug delivery. Moreover, the disulfide based bifunctional initiator was introduced into the midpoint of the polymer chain, which could break down to afford the corresponding polymer chain with thiol end group under the reducing condition. The thiol-terminated polymer was also post-functionalized via thiol-ene click chemistry. In addition, the aliphatic polycarbonate is a biocompatible and biodegradable polymer, which is widely used in medical and pharmaceutical applications. The subsequent introduction of sugar moiety to the reactive polymer chain via CuAAC click reaction and then the interactions between glycopolymers and lectins were investigated by Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) and Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation (QCM-D). The controlled SET-LRP polymerization of TMS-PgMA and SET-RAFT polymerization PgMA with the intact alkyne at ambient temperature were investigated. A maleimide functional initiator and CPDB, as the chain transfer agent have been employed. The introduction of maleimide moiety was to allow for post polymerization conjugation to peptides via reaction with cysteines. The subsequent introduction of sugar azides to click with the reactive polymer containing alkyne group and the glycopolymers through CuAAC was also investigated. The glycopolymer has been successfully prepared combining the SET-LRP/SET-RAFT and CuAAc click chemistry at ambient temperature.

Book excerpt: This book covers a broad range of materials science that has been brought to bear on providing solutions to the challenges of developing self-healing and protective coatings for a range of metals. The book has a strong emphasis on characterisation techniques, particularly new techniques that are beginning to be used in the coatings area. It features many contributions written by experts from various industrial sectors which examine the needs of the sectors and the state of the art. The development of self-healing and protective coatings has been an expanding field in recent years and applies a lot of new knowledge gained from other fields as well as other areas of materials science to the development of coatings. It has borrowed from fields such as the food and pharmaceutical industries who have used, polymer techniques, sol-gel science and colloidosome technology for a range encapsulation techniques. It has also borrowed from fields like hydrogen storage such as from the development of hierarchical and other materials based on organic templating as “nanocontainers” for the delivery of inhibitors. In materials science, recent developments in high throughput and other characterisation techniques, such as those available from synchrotrons, are being increasing used for novel characterisation – one only needs to look at the application of these techniques in self healing polymers to gauge wealth of new information that has been gained from these techniques. This work is largely driven by the need to replace environmental pollutants and hazardous chemicals that represent risk to humans such as chromate inhibitors which are still used in some applications.
