Book excerpt: Herein we describe the synthesis, characterization, and role several iron complexes in the coupling of pyrrole and phenylboronic acid to form 2-phenylpyrrole. The oxidation state and spin state of the iron complexes were characterized using X-ray crystallography, UV-vis absorbance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and in some cases electron paramagnetic reasonance spectroscopy. Furthermore, the results indicate that the iron(III) complexes are essential for catalytic and regioselective production of the 2-phenylpyrrole product. The complexes were compared to evaluate the effect of five properties on catalyst reaction yields: the coordination requirements of the catalyst, half-potential, topological constraint/rigidity, N-atom modification(s), increasing oxidative stability of the complex, and geometric parameters. The need for two labile cis-coordination sites was confirmed based on a 42% decrease in catalytic reaction yield observed when complexes containing penta-dentate ligands were used in place of complexes with tetra-dentate ligands. A strong correlation between iron(III/II) redox potential and catalytic reaction yields was also observed, with [Fe2+L6(Cl)2] providing the highest yield (81%, -405 mV). A Lorentzian fitting of redox potential versus yields predicts that these catalysts can undergo more fine tuning to further increase yields. Interestingly, the remaining properties explored did not show a direct, strong relationship to catalytic reaction yields. Furthermore, the role of the sacrificial oxidant, the lack of radical participation, and the formation of μ-oxodiiron species was established leading to a more detailed mechanistic cycle. Finally, a library of five pyclen-based ligands have been developed for use as iron and europium chelators. A preliminary investigation into iron PCTA complexes indicate that the iron center can bind to all seven of the ligand donors, however, the iron complex does not afford a CEST signal. Establishing that heptadentate ligands containing carboxylic acid pendent arms are not ideal for the developments of iron PARACEST agents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most essential processes for sustaining the world's population is nitrogen fixation, the conversion of atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into ammonia (NH3), the major component of fertilizer. The industrial Haber-Bosch process for N2 fixation requires extreme temperatures and pressures, and consequentially consumes much of the world's energy. In contrast, bacteria containing the nitrogenase enzyme fix N2 under ambient conditions despite the robust N2 triple bond. A popular approach towards studying the complex mechanism of nitrogenase is to synthesize model complexes of its active site, the iron-molybdenum co-factor (FeMoco). Most model complexes to date are low-spin and thus poorly resemble FeMoco's high-spin environment. The first high-spin iron (I) terminal N2 adduct was recently synthesized by the Harman Lab using an adamantyl-substituted trispyrazolylborate (Tp) ligand. However, its electron-rich nature renders it incapable of forming N-H bonds. We propose the synthesis of a more electron-deficient, fluorinated Tp ligand, Tp(3,5-(CF3)2Ph, CF3 (hydrotris-3-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)Phenyl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)borate). When bound to iron, this should facilitate the reduction at less negative potentials and the functionalization of N2. Synthesis of (3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) methyl ketone has been completed. Claisen condensation with trifluoroethylacetate, followed by condensation with hydrazine to form the pyrazole ring is underway. Combing the pyrazole with sodium borohydride will generate the Na Tp(3,5-(CF3)2Ph, CF3. Subsequent metalation with iron(II) chloride under an inert atmosphere should generate the corresponding iron compound. Compounds will be characterized by a variety of methods including 1H & 19F-NMR, EPR, IR, Raman, X-ray crystallography, and cyclic voltammetry.

Book excerpt: This fundamental book presents the most comprehensive summary of the current state in chemistry of cage metal complexes. After their previous book “The Encapsulation Phenomenon” (www.springer.com/978-3-319-27737-0) the authors in this book focus on the encapsulation of metal ions by different types of three-dimensional mono- and polynucleating caging ligands. Within these cage metal complexes, (metal) ions can be isolated from external factors. The book provides both a classification of the cage compounds and summaries of synthetic approaches. On that basis the authors then describe the unique chemical and physical properties and the resulting reactivity of the cage compounds, as well as practical and potential applications as potent topological drugs and prodrugs, antifibrillogenic agents, radiodiagnostic and radiotherapeutic compounds, paramagnetic probes, single-molecule magnets, electrocatalysts for hydrogen production, (photo)electronic devices, and many more. Readers will find a well-structured and concise overview, with particular emphasis on a review of synthesis and reactivity of various cage metal complexes, summarizing over 400 literature references, clearly presented in over 300 color schemes and figures.

The first part features concepts in bioinorganic chemistry such as electron transfer, medicinal inorganic chemistry, bioorganometallics and metal DNA complexes, while the second part presents inorganic model chemistry on metallo-enzymes, organized by metal ion. Experts in the pertinent fields provide a didactically well-organized background on relevant biological systems, as well as on their structural, functional and spectroscopic properties. All chapters are similarly structured, each one beginning with a timeline featuring the most important historical facts on the subject, followed by a table of the most significant enzymes. The authors also summarize key developments and open questions within the respective model systems. This book is aimed at senior undergraduate and graduate students in chemistry, biochemistry, life science and related fields.
