Book excerpt: During the past decade, research and development in the area of synthesis and applications of different nanostructured titanium dioxide have become tremendous. This book briefly describes properties, production, modification and applications of nanostructured titanium dioxide focusing in particular on photocatalytic activity. The physicochemical properties of nanostructured titanium dioxide are highlighted and the links between properties and applications are emphasized. The preparation of TiO2 nanomaterials, including nanoparticles, nanorods, nanowires, nanosheets, nanofibers, and nanotubes are primarily categorized by their preparation method (sol-gel and hydrothermal processes). Examples of early applications of nanostructured titanium dioxide in dye-sensitized solar cells, hydrogen production and storage, sensors, rechargeable batteries, electrocatalysis, self-cleaning and antibacterial surfaces and photocatalytic cancer treatment are reviewed. The review of modifications of TiO2 nanomaterials is mainly focused on the research related to the modifications of the optical properties of TiO2 nanomaterials, since many applications of TiO2 nanomaterials are closely related to their optical properties. Photocatalytic removal of various pollutants using pure TiO2 nanomaterials, TiO2-based nanoclays and non-metal doped nanostructured TiO2 are also discussed.

Book excerpt: 'This book not only provides a fundamental technical background on black TiO2 and the synthesis of this material, it also covers state-of-the-art applications and will provide the reader with current information on property behavior and show the direction of the latest research for this interesting material for energy applications.'IEEE Electrical Insulation MagazineThe transformation of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanomaterials from white to black using disorder engineering has meant a dramatic increase in their performance in photocatalytic experiments. The efficiency with which black TiO2 nanomaterials can use sunlight to split water molecules for the production of hydrogen is significantly improved compared to using white crystals, and this pure hydrogen can then be used in batteries and fuels. The black TiO2 nanomaterials are also very promising in CO2 conversion, water treatment, and in air quality control. This book aims to present the recent progress on the research of black TiO2 nanomaterials, and how they can be used in a number of clean energy applications. The text covers a number of research topics, including the synthesis of black TiO2 nanomaterials (nanoparticles, nanowires and nanotubes) and their properties, the effect of point defects and ordered/disordered morphology, the applications in charge storage and photoelectrochemical water splitting, use in lithium ion batteries and in microwave absorption. Also included is a theoretical analysis of this research, thereby providing a comprehensive review of the subject for students, researchers and practitioners in catalytic science, materials science, nanotechnology, green technology, and chemistry.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin titanium dioxide films were produced by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on sapphire(0001) in an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) chamber. A method was developed for producing controlled submonolayer depositions from titanium isopropoxide precursor. Film thickness ranged from 0.1 to 2.7 nm. In situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to determine film stoichiometry with increasing thickness. The effect of isothermal annealing on desorption was evaluated. Photoelectron peak shapes and positions from the initial monolayers were analyzed for evidence of interface reaction. Deposition from titanium isopropoxide is divided into two regimes: depositions below and above the pyrolysis temperature. This temperature was determined to be 300 deg C. Controlled submonolayers of titanium oxide were produced by cycles of dosing with titanium isopropoxide vapor below and annealing above 300 deg C. Precursor adsorption below the pyrolysis temperature was observed to saturate after 15 minutes of dosing. The quantity absorbed was shown to have an upper limit of one monolayer. The stoichiometry of thin films grown by the cycling method were determined to be TiO2. Titanium dioxide film stoichiometry was unaffected by isothermal annealing at 700 deg C. Annealing produced a decrease in film thickness. This was explained as due to desorption. Desorption ceased at approximately 2.5 to 3 monolayers, suggesting bonding of the initial monolayers of film to sapphire is stronger than to itself. Evidence of sapphire reduction at the interface by the depositions was not observed. The XPS O is peak shifted with increased film thickness. The shifts were consistent with oxygen in sapphire and titanium dioxide having different O is photoelectron peak positions. Simulations showed the total shifts for thin films ranging in thickness of 0.1 to 2.7 nm to be -0.99 to -1.23 eV. Thick films were produced for comparison.

Book excerpt: This outstanding thesis provides a wide-ranging overview of the growth of titanium dioxide thin films and its use in photo-electrochemicals such as water splitting. The context for water splitting is introduced with the theory of semiconductor-liquid junctions, which are dealt with in detail. In particular plasmonic enhancement of TiO2 by the addition of gold nanoparticles is considered in depth, including a thorough and critical review of the literature, which discusses the possible mechanisms that may be at work. Plasmonic enhancement is demonstrated with gold nanoparticles on Nb-doped TiO2. Finally, the use of temperature and pressure to control the phase and morphology of thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition is presented.

Book excerpt: Zinc oxide, already used millennia ago as a medicine and as an adjunct to brass production, has assumed a new importance in the modern world because of its native n-type semiconducting properties. It has, for instance, a relatively large (3.3eV) band-gap at room temperature. This leads to higher breakdown voltages, resistance to high electric fields, lower electronic noise and superior performance at high temperatures and powers. The band-gap can also be tailored by alloying with magnesium or cadmium oxides. The material exhibits other useful properties, such as a good transparency, a high electron mobility and a strong room-temperature luminescence; all of which are invaluable to the manufacture of the liquid-crystal displays of modern consumer goods. The present compilation comprises nearly 500 accounts of research on the diffusional behaviour of dopants and on the defects present in the wurtzite or zincblende structures. It is hoped that this handy compendium of data will be of value to those working on the tailoring of ZnO properties; especially with regard to the controversies concerning its doping behaviour. Review from Book News Inc.: Paragraph-long abstracts of 451 articles describe diffusion and defects in the naturally occurring oxide known variously as titanium dioxide, titanium(IV) oxide, and titania. They are arranged in topical sections on diffusion, conductivity, electromigration, dislocations, grain boundaries, planar defects, point defects, stacking faults, surface defects, surface reconstruction, and twins. A few tables and graphs are included.
