This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synopsis of the True Crabs (Brachyura) Of Monterey Bay California In this paper are included all of the Brachyura or true crabs known from Monterey Bay or from points near enough to make their occurrence there probable, and it is hoped that the keys and figures here given will render easy their identification. It is intended that this shall be one of a series of papers of similar scope dealing with the fauna of Monterey Bay, with a view toward placing at the disposal of workers at the Marine Biological Laboratory an easy means of becoming acquainted with the invertebrates of that region. Preliminary work has been done in several groups, and in the case of the Anomura and the Macrura, the writer hopes to present reports in the near future. Monterey Bay occupies an open semicircular indentation of the coast line, a little over one hundred miles south of San Francisco, measuring about twenty-five miles from Santa Cruz on the north to Point Pinos on the south, and perhaps ten miles from a line drawn between these two points to the mouth of the Salinas River on the east. The northern and eastern shores of the bay are low and sandy, but from a point near the town of Monterey to Point Pinos and thence south nearly to the town of Carmel, some ten miles, the coast is, with the exception of a few small sandy beaches, extremely rugged, furnishing innumerable rocky tide-pools that form an unusually rich collecting ground, not only for Crustacea but for all kinds of invertebrates. The Stanford Marine Biological Laboratory is located at Pacific Grove, about midway of the southern shore of the bay, and as this has been the central point for shore collecting, the greater part of the work has been confined to four or five miles of the coast, reaching from near Monterey to some distance south of Point Pinos, though a few trips have been made to points north or south of these limits. Considerable dredging has been done at moderate depths, thirty fathoms and under, from a small launch. Off the eastern shore the bottom is sandy; this has been little worked, but has yielded some valuable specimens. Off the town of Monterey in the southeastern corner of the bay there is a large area of hard blue clay, rich in burrowing mollusks, which has proved a good field for Crustacea, and here most of the dredging has been done. Book Synopsis A Global Overview of the Conservation of Freshwater Decapod Crustaceans by : Tadashi Kawai
Download or read book A Global Overview of the Conservation of Freshwater Decapod Crustaceans written by Tadashi Kawai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces updated information on conservation issues, providing an overview of what is needed to advance the global conservation of freshwater decapods such as freshwater crabs, crayfish, and shrimps. Biodiversity loss in general is highest in organisms that depend on intact freshwater habitats, because freshwater ecosystems worldwide are suffering intense threats from multiple sources. Our understanding of the number and location of threatened species of decapods, and of the nature of their extinction threats has improved greatly in recent years, and has enabled the development of species conservation strategies. This volume focuses on saving threatened species from extinction, and emphasizes the importance of the successful implementation of conservation action plans through cooperation between scientists, conservationists, educators, funding agencies, policy makers, and conservation agencies.

As she walks toward the store seeking directions, she is jostled by a young man. Book excerpt: A must-read for humans of all ages, this middle grade novel grows up before your very eyes. Painfully shy and lonely, eleven-year-old Mariah Miller hates being a human; she'd rather be an animal so she wouldn't have to go to school and deal with mean old Mrs. Tarbox and her nasty cousin, Travis, who has invaded her life. Enchantment abounds when she finds a magic spearhead on the beach that allows her to talk to a wise old horseshoe crab and a host of other animals. Her father becomes seriously ill, and throughout her trials in the real world, she is often surprised by the unpredictable power of the spearhead. As she travels through time and space, and listens to the wisdom of creatures and people, Mariah makes leaps in her own personal growth, discovers the interdependence of all living things, learns how perspective creates reality, and what it really means to be human.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This heart wrenching, true story of family dysfunction is narrated in extended flashback form by the adult survivor of this harrowing tale of wretched human acts committed by people who are supposed to love you more than any other people in the world; his own family! The author utilizes the subconscious of his post traumatic stress disorder mind to resurrect the reminiscence of his torture, pain, despair, sorrow, anger, and survival as told through the eyes of the author, when he was an adolescent. The author reels you into his childhood and the day to day mental and physical abuse, deceit, manipulation and evil plot to cover up generational, and systematic family dysfunction. With flashbacks and foreshadowing to appropriately explain this drama, the author straps you into a roller coaster of the emotions he felt then and now; as well as making the reader contemplate the choices they would make in the visually, and interactive way the author chooses to tell the story in first and third person. The reader will be shaken at their emotional core as the unbridled truth of the author whisper's into the literary mind's eye of deductive reasoning to warn, encourage, and uplift any reader. This case study, that was thirty-six years in the making on family dysfunction and mental illness takes an nostalgic ride through the 1980's, 90', and early 2000's; with a wonderful exploration of the English language that complements the Bildungsroman memoir! The author pours his mind, heart, and soul on the pages in an attempt save his own mental sanity and others from having to experience such an ordeal!
