In South Africa there is confusion on the subject and some farmers claim that have never seen signs of the disease, though their tress are infected. The cause of blossom malformation is uncertain. According to literature two organisms are often quoted viz, Aceria mangiferae, a budmite, and Fusarium sugglutinans, a common fungus. There is also a third possibility of F. subglutinans, possibly transmitted by a mite and the two operaing together. Whatever the cause, blossom malformation is considered a serious disease, and some of the symptoms which are often seen in the Tzaneen and Nelspruit areas are given here to assist gorwers in recognizing this disorder. Infected tress do not yield any fruit. The disease is effectively distributed by infected nursery tress. No chemical control has yet been discovered.

This disease, which is one of the most destructive in nature, is of major concern in South Africa. The fungal species responsible for the disease varies substantially worldwide, therefore the species responsible for the disease in South Africa has to be confirmed. In the last two decades, biocontrol agents have emerged as potential, effective strategies of disease control for several crops. In order to fully understand the efficacy of such biocontrol agents, a thorough study of the dynamics of the interaction between the biocontrol agents, the pathogen and the host, was required. The aim of this study was the identification of the Fusarium spp. responsible for MMD in South African mango orchards, as well as the screening of microorganisms for their ability to control the pathogen. The modes of action of the best screened antagonists and a commercial biocontrol product were determined, with focus on induced resistance.

Arid and semiarid areas account for almost 70 per cent of the total cropped area of India. In the absence of any type of aggregation, the soils are highly erodible, lack structure and have a very coarse in texture with low water holding capacity. Intensive agricultural practices, increasing population pressure, climatic changes, environmental pollution, loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, salinization and water depletion are all threatening the sustainability of agriculture. In view of the mounting demand for food, it is vital to link enhanced food production with nutritional security, conservation of natural resources, increasing farmers’ incomes, employment generation through agricultural diversification. Horticulture, particularly of fruit trees, can play a major role in solving the problem of nutrition, as fruits are rich source of vitamins and minerals and have antioxidant properties. Fruit trees, which are mostly deciduous, add leaf litter to the soil, and this ultimately helps to improve the condition of the soil. In addition, fruit trees are known to reduce soil erosion and reduce run off. The trees also play a major role in purifying the environment as they are the known carbon sequesters. Fruit-tree cultivation is a profitable preposition. There is no scope to increase the land surface; all increase in productivity therefore has to be from the available land. This means introducing cropping systems that can meet the basic food, fodder and fuel requirement of farming families.

We hope to provide the target readers (dermatologists and dermatologists- -in-train ing) with some assistance in carrying out this frequently complicated task. For the confrontation with an atypical presentation of a common disease or the classic presentation of an uncommon disease, the reader will hopefully fnd this book very useful.
