Book excerpt: The first Symposium Transsonicum took pl.ace in Aachen thirteen years ago during a period of decreasing governmental. and industrial. support for transonic flow research. Since then, there has been a strong revival. in interest in transonic flow research so that the number of partici pants at the second symposium remained about the same as at the first even in spite of tight financial. means and Limited governmental. support. During both meetings the number of participants reached the upper Limit of the number desirabl.e for such a symposium. Participants came from aU over the worl.d and there was a weU bal.anced distribution of participants from aU countries interested in transonic flow research. The discussions - mostLy conducted in EngLish - were stimul.ating and there was a great deal. of interest in the l.ectures as was shown by the good attendance even during the l.ast session on Saturday morning.

Book excerpt: "Symposium Transsonicum" was founded by Klaus Oswatitsch four decades ago when there was clearly a need for a systematic treatment of flow problems in the higher speed regime in aeronautics. The first conference in 1962 brought together scientists concerned with fundamental problems involving the sonic flow speed regime. Results of the conference provided an understanding of some basic tran sonic phenomena by proposing mathematical methods that allowed for the de velopment of practical calculations. The "Transonic Controversy" (about shock free flows) was still an open issue after this meeting. In 1975 the second symposium was held, by then there was much understanding in how to avoid shocks in a steady plane flow to be designed, but still very little was known in unsteady phenomena due to a lack of elucidating experiments. A third meeting in 1988 reflected the availability oflarger computers which allowed the numerical analysis of flows with shocks to a reasonable accuracy. Because we are trying to keep Oswatitsch's heritage in science alive especially in Gottingen, we were asked by the aerospace research community to organize another symposium. Much had been achieved already in the knowledge, techno logy and applications in transonics, so IUT AM had to be convinced that a fourth meeting would not just be a reunion of old friends reminiscing some scientific past. The scientific committee greatly supported my efforts to invite scientists ac tively working in transonic problems which still pose substantial difficulties to ae rospace and turbomachinery industry.

Book excerpt: Continuing the tradition of the IUTAM Symposia TRANSSONICA, this review of the numerical simulation and physical modelling of transonic flows presents new developments in the fields of computational and experimental aerodynamics. A major topic of the symposium proceedings is the evaluation of present numerical analysis techniques with respect to transonic aerodynamics. In the field of experimental aerodynamics, the high Reynolds number effect and the interference-free testing in transonic wind tunnels are of special interest.

Book excerpt: Ever since airplane speeds started to approach the speed of sound, the study of compressible flow problems attracted much talent and support in the major indus trialized countries. Today, gas dynamics is a mature branch of science whose many aspects and applications are much too numerous to be mastered by a single person or to be described in a few volumes. This book commemorates the 70th birthday of a great pioneer and teacher of gas dynamics, Dr. Klaus Oswatitsch, Professor of Fluid Mechanics at the Technical University of Vienna and former Director of the Institute for Theoretical Gas Dyna mics, Deutsche Forschungs-und Versuchsanstalt fUr Luft-und Raumfahrt. Several reasons motivated us to prepare an English translation of Oswatitsch's selected sci entific papers. First, we hope that a book containing his major papers will be wel come as a valuable reference text in gas dynamics. Oswatitsch's work is frequently used in the literature in one form or another, but it is usually quite time-consuming for the English speaking reader to consult the original texts. As a result, reference to and understanding of his papers is often incomplete. For example, Oswatitsch's formulation of the equivalence rule hardly ever is quoted in recent textbooks, al though it preceded declassification of Whitcomb's results by several years. Further more, his papers contain much information, which has not yet been fully appreciated in the Anglo-American literature.

Book excerpt: Plates and panels are primary components in many structures including space vehicles, aircraft, automobiles, buildings, bridge decks, ships and submarines. The ability to design, analyse, optimise and select the proper materials for these structures is a necessity for structural designers, analysts and researchers. This text consists of four parts. The first deals with plates of isotropic (metallic and polymeric) materials. The second involves composite material plates, including anisotropy and laminate considerations. The third section treats sandwich constructions of various types, and the final section gives an introduction to plates involving piezoelectric materials, in which the "smart" or "intelligent" materials are used as actuators or sensors. In each section, the formulations encompass plate structures subjected to static loads, dynamic loads, buckling, thermal/moisture environments, and minimum weight structural optimisation. This is a textbook for a graduate course, an undergraduate senior course and a reference. Many homework problems are given in various chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New developments in the applications of fracture mechanics to engineering problems have taken place in the last years. Composite materials have extensively been used in engineering problems. Quasi-brittle materials including concrete, cement pastes, rock, soil, etc. all benefit from these developments. Layered materials and especially thin film/substrate systems are becoming important in small volume systems used in micro and nanoelectromechancial systems (MEMS and NEMS). Nanostructured materials are being introduced in our every day life. In all these problems fracture mechanics plays a major role for the prediction of failure and safe design of materials and structures. These new challenges motivated the author to proceed with the second edition of the book. The second edition of the book contains four new chapters in addition to the ten chapters of the first edition. The fourteen chapters of the book cover the basic principles and traditional applications, as well as the latest developments of fracture mechanics as applied to problems of composite materials, thin films, nanoindentation and cementitious materials. Thus the book provides an introductory coverage of the traditional and contemporary applications of fracture mechanics in problems of utmost technological importance. With the addition of the four new chapters the book presents a comprehensive treatment of fracture mechanics. It includes the basic principles and traditional applications as well as the new frontiers of research of fracture mechanics during the last three decades in topics of contemporary importance, like composites, thin films, nanoindentation and cementitious materials. The book contains fifty example problems and more than two hundred unsolved problems. A "Solutions Manual" is available upon request for course instructors from the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is based on a graduate course, Mechanical Engipeering 266, which was developed over a number of years at the University of California-Berkeley. Shorter versions of the course were given at the University of Paris VI in 1969, and at the University of Paris XI in 1972. The course was originally presented as the last of a three quarter sequence on Compressible Flow Theory, with emphasis on the treatment of non-linear problems by numerical techniques. This is reflected in the material of the first half of the book, covering several techniques for handling non-linear wave interaction and other problems in Gas Dynamics. The techniques have their origins in the Method of Characteristics (in both two and three dimensions). Besides reviewing the method itself the more recent techniques derived from it, firstly by Godunov and his group, and secondly by Rusanov and his co-workers, are described. Both these approaches are applicable to steady flows calculated as asymptotic states of unsteady flows and treat elliptic prob lems as limiting forms of unsteady hyperbolic problems. They are there fore applicable to low speed as well a~ to high speed flow problems. The second half of the book covers the treatment of a variety of steady flow problems, including effects of both viscosity and compressibi lity, by the Method of Integral Relations, Telenin's Method, and the Method of Lines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is concerned with the basic problems of the theory of thermoelasticity for three models of continuous bodies: materials with voids, micropolar solids and nonsimple bodies. Beginning with the basic laws of thermodynamics, the theory of thermoelastic materials with voids is treated. Two subsequent chapters cover the analysis of the linear theory of micropolar thermoelastic bodies. The book concludes with a study of nonsimple thermoelastic materials, which are characterised by the inclusion of higher gradients of displacement in the basic postulates. Relevant examples and exercises which illustrate the theory are given throughout the text. The book should be of interest to mathematicians and specialists working in the fields of elasticity, thermoelasticity, civil engineering and geophysics.
