Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Course in Analytical Geometry: Plane and Solid With Numerous Examples The vital difference between this book and similar works is that it does not attempt to perform the duty of both teacher and text-book at the same time. Many recent books contain too much in the way of spoon-feeding, and leave little or noth ing for the teacher. Such works, in general, are a failure pedagogically. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plane and Solid Analytic Geometry Algebra, on the other hand, was unknown to the Greeks. Its beginnings are found among the Hindus, to whom the so into Western Europe late, and not till the close of the middle ages was it carried to the point which is marked by any school book of today that treats this subject. When scholars had once possessed themselves of these two subjects Geometry and Algebra the next step was quickly taken. The renowned philosopher and mathematician, Ren Descartes, in his Geometrie of 1637, showed how the methods of algebra could be applied to the study of geometry. He thus became the founder of Analytic Geometry.* The originals and the locus problems of Elementary Geometry depend for their solution almost wholly on ingenu ity. There are no general methods whereby one can be sure of solving a new problem of this class. Analytic Geometry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Plane Analytic Geometry: A Text-Ncluding Numerous Examples and Applications, and Especially Designed The changes in the present edition consist mainly in the addition of a moderate amount of new matter. Almost all of this will be found after page 107, and in particular the last half of Chapter VIII and the whole of Chapter IX are new. It is hoped that in its present form the book will be found to cover the ground of the ordinary first course in analytic geometry as given in American colleges and technical schools, and that it will prove serviceable as a text-book in such courses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plane Analytic Geometry: With Introductory Chapters on the Differential Calculus Analytic geometry, if properly taught, is a difficult subject, and concentration on a few of its important princi ples is necessary if mastery is the aim. I have cut out, or put in small type (or in late chapters which may be easily omitted) what seems to me less essential. With very few exceptions I have used methods so straightforward that they can serve as models for the student in his own work. Neither the notation of determinants nor (except in Chapters XII, XIII) that of the calculus has been used, since a difficult new subject is only obscured by a notation which has not already become thoroughly familiar, and I am old-fashioned enough to believe in handling one difficulty at a time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plane and Solid Analytic Geometry: An Elementary Textbook The present work is intended as a text-book for classroom use, and not as an exhaustive treatise on the subject. This object has been kept constantly in mind in writing the book, and every subject has been treated from this point of view. A large part of the book was mimeographed and tested by use for several years in the author's classes in Harvard University. The author has tried to meet the needs of a class which occupies from sixty to seventy recitation hours upon the subject, and it is thought that the book ought to be completed by the average class in that time. Necessarily some subjects which usually find a place in books on Analytic Geometry have been omitted; but it is thought that nothing has been omitted which has an important bearing on future mathematical study. The conies have been treated from their ratio definition, and much space and time have been gained by not repeating proofs which are identical, or very similar, for the three forms of the conic. Analytic methods are used throughout the book, and the author has attempted to give proofs which are concise and easily understood by the average student, but, at the same time, mathematically rigorous. In this connection he would call attention to the proofs in oblique coordinates (Arts. 12, 28), which are usually given without reference to the directions of the lines, and, therefore, do not hold if the positions of the points are changed.
