Download or read book The Corner written by Melvin R. Bielawski and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-12 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE CORNER provides an historical record of the life style of young men in what could be considered a typical neighborhood prior to and during the WW II period in America. Toledo, Ohio is the setting of this documentary. The specific scene is the corner of Junction Avenue and Lucas Street, located in a solid Polish/American neighborhood. The story could be written of many other neighborhoods and ethnic and racial groups throughout the United States. It just so happens that the writer was a member of this particular group and neighborhood. Dramatic changes have taken place since the time period addressed in THE CORNER. WW II impacted the way of life of all Americans. Ethnic and racial neighborhoods and groups are still located throughout the country but on a far less scale. Nicknames, a sign of popularity in most cases or of a special trait of the individual, are not as common in today's society. New and interesting developments have impacted the old meetings places and methods of communication amongst the young men throughout America. Television; new and interesting hobbies; and diverse civic, religious, and other group organizations that provide meeting places and many other features that make for a more effective life style of American youth have replaced the "old" but unforgetable meetings on the local "corners". Unfortunately a part of American culture and history are lost for the ages. THE CORNER captures a capsule of a part of American life during an era that has literally disappeared from the the American scene.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nevil Shute was an English novelist and aeronautical engineer, who spent his later years living in Australia. His novels are written in a simple, highly readable style, with clearly delineated plots. An enduring theme of his novels is the dignity of work, spanning all classes. His famous novel ‘On the Beach’ (1957) reflects his pessimism for humanity in the atomic age, while ‘A Town like Alice’ (1950) tackles themes of emigration and racism, as the heroine seeks economic prosperity in a disadvantaged outback community. Download or read book The Lovejoy Omnibus written by Jonathan Gash and published by C & R Crime. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Judas Pair Every antique dealer is a bit of a detective, following clues to find the trophies that pay the rent, but when Lovejoy takes on the job of tracking down a pair of duelling pistols so rare that he's not even sure actually exist, he needs all the instincts of a detective to pick his way through an unsolved crime. Along the way, he becomes convinced that the weapons do exist but that they have fallen into the hands of a vile murderer. Locating the ancient weapons seems like the least of his problems when Lovejoy then finds himself fighting for his life in a duel to the death! Gold From Gemini Lovejoy discovers how the lure of gold brings out the worst kind of treasure seeker when, broke as usual and earning a crust as an unlikely babysitter, he stumbles across the diaries of a painter that appear to point to the whereabouts of a fabled hoard of Roman gold coins. Lovejoy is tempted to dismiss the whole thing as a hoax, but vile threats and violent intimidation have a way of changing his mind. He sets out to unravel the clues in the diaries, with some particularly nasty characters dogging his every move. The Grail Tree Lovejoy has heard of more nutters who have claimed to be in possession of the one, true Holy Grail than he has had hot dinners. He's not too impressed with the eccentric clergyman making the latest claim - especially when the good vicar turns out to be one of the finest forgers Lovejoy has ever met. But when the vicar and his lady companion end up dead it becomes clear that someone else is after the old man's artefact. To solve the mystery and protect a precious piece of history, Lovejoy puts his life on the line and acquires a surprising new partner... Spend Game When Lovejoy witnesses a car crash that turns out to be a murder - with one of his oldest antique-dealer friends the victim - he sets out on a trail of revenge that leaves him pondering several bewildering questions. Why did his friend buy up a load of junk furniture? What did he want with an old doctor's bag? Why was his friend killed? Who was trying to kill Lovejoy and - most perplexing of all - what the hell is he doing potholing through underground tunnels dodging armed hit men?

Book Synopsis Black, White, and Indian by : Claudio Saunt
Download or read book Black, White, and Indian written by Claudio Saunt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-04-21 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deceit, compromise, and betrayal were the painful costs of becoming American for many families. For people of Indian, African, and European descent living in the newly formed United States, the most personal and emotional choices--to honor a friendship or pursue an intimate relationship--were often necessarily guided by the harsh economic realities imposed by the country's racial hierarchy. Few families in American history embody this struggle to survive the pervasive onslaught of racism more than the Graysons. Like many other residents of the eighteenth-century Native American South, where Black-Indian relations bore little social stigma, Katy Grayson and her brother William--both Creek Indians--had children with partners of African descent. As the plantation economy began to spread across their native land soon after the birth of the American republic, however, Katy abandoned her black partner and children to marry a Scottish-Creek man. She herself became a slaveholder, embracing slavery as a public display of her elevated place in America's racial hierarchy. William, by contrast, refused to leave his black wife and their several children and even legally emancipated them. Traveling separate paths, the Graysons survived the invasion of the Creek Nation by U.S. troops in 1813 and again in 1836 and endured the Trail of Tears, only to confront each other on the battlefield during the Civil War. Afterwards, they refused to recognize each other's existence. In 1907, when Creek Indians became U.S. citizens, Oklahoma gave force of law to the family schism by defining some Graysons as white, others as black. Tracking a full five generations of the Grayson family and basing his account in part on unprecedented access to the forty-four volume diary of G. W. Grayson, the one-time principal chief of the Creek Nation, Claudio Saunt tells not only of America's past, but of its present, shedding light on one of the most contentious issues in Indian politics, the role of "blood" in the construction of identity. Overwhelmed by the racial hierarchy in the United States and compelled to adopt the very ideology that oppressed them, the Graysons denied their kin, enslaved their relatives, married their masters, and went to war against each other. Claudio Saunt gives us not only a remarkable saga in its own right but one that illustrates the centrality of race in the American experience.

Book Synopsis Polish American Voices by : Anna D. Jaroszyńska-Kirchmann
Download or read book Polish American Voices written by Anna D. Jaroszyńska-Kirchmann and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-29 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents 145 primary source documents of Polish immigrants from different waves and backgrounds speaking about their lives, concerns, and viewpoints in their own voices, while they grapple with issues of identity and strive to make sense of their lives in the context of migration. Poles have come to America since the Jamestown settlement in 1608 and constituted one of the largest immigrant groups at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. As of 2020, the Census Bureau lists them as the sixth largest ethnic group in the country. The history of their experience is an integral part of the American story as well as that of the broader Polish diaspora. Each of the ten comprehensive chapters presents a specific theme illuminated by a selection of letters, press articles, fragments of memoirs and autobiographical fiction, interviews, organizational papers, and other publications, as well as visual sources such as cartoons, posters, and photographs. Brief introductions to the documents and a "Further Reading" section offer historical context and point readers to additional resources. The book provides students and scholars with a broad understanding and an incentive for future study of the Polish experience in the United States.
