This book was released on 1967 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination was made of fresh and preserved specimens of Pacific lantern fishes, hatchet fishes, and hake. Most of the lantern fishes under 50-mm standard length contain gas in their swimbladders and, hence, are probably major sound scatterers. The hatchet fishes possibly contribute to scattering of nonmigratory layers. The resonance depths of the swimbladders differ widely for sound of different frequencies. Because of its larger size, the swimbladder of the hake should resonate at low frequencies.

Book Synopsis Deep-Sea Fishes by : Imants G. Priede
Download or read book Deep-Sea Fishes written by Imants G. Priede and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-10 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technological advances of the last twenty years have brought huge advances in our understanding of the deep sea and of the species inhabiting this elusive and fascinating environment. Synthesising the very latest research and discoveries, this is a comprehensive and much-needed account of deep-sea fishes. Priede examines all aspects of this incredibly diverse group of animals, reviewing almost 3,500 species and covering deep-sea fish evolution, physiology and ecology as well as charting the history of their discovery from the eighteenth century to the present day. Providing a global account of both pelagic and demersal species, the book ultimately considers the effect of the growing deep-sea fishing industry on sustainability. Copiously illustrated with explanations of the deep-sea environment, drawings of fishes and information on how they adapt to the deep, this is an essential resource for biologists, conservationists, fishery managers and anyone interested in marine evolution and natural history.

Book Synopsis Animal as Machine by : Michel Anctil
Download or read book Animal as Machine written by Michel Anctil and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2022-04-15 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the ages natural historians have puzzled over how animals work, wavering between a vitalist belief in a soul animating bodily functions and a mechanistic outlook in which animal body parts are seen as pieces of organic machinery. Animal as Machine explores the life, work, and ideas of scientists who, branding themselves as physiologists, subscribed to mechanistic concepts to explain how animals acquire and process food, breathe, circulate their blood, and sense their environment. As medical physiology thrived in the nineteenth century, zoologists struggled to forge their own distinctive physiology predicated on understanding animal functions in a context of environmental adaptation and evolutionary forces. Physiological schools with distinct emphases that shaped their outlook sprang up around the world. Dividing their time between fieldwork in marine stations and laboratory experimentation, animal physiologists stood in awe of the diversity and ingenuity of the functional strategies by which animals survived. Animal as Machine tells a remarkable and insightful story of the larger-than-life personalities and gripping historical episodes that marked the emergence and blossoming of animal physiology.
