Book Synopsis One Hundred Proofs That the Earth Is Not a Globe by : William Carpenter
Download or read book One Hundred Proofs That the Earth Is Not a Globe written by William Carpenter and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much may be gathered, indirectly, from the arguments in these pages, as to the real nature of the Earth on which we live and of the heavenly bodies which were created for us. The reader is requested to be patient in this matter and not expect a whole flood of light to burst in upon him at once, through the dense clouds of opposition and prejudice which hang all around. Old ideas have to be gotten rid of, by some people, before they can entertain the new; and this will especially be the case in the matter of the Sun, about which we are taught, by Mr. Proctor, as follows: “The globe of the Sun is so much larger than that of the Earth that no less than 1,250,000 globes as large as the Earth would be wanted to make up together a globe as large as the Sun.” Whereas, we know that, as it is demonstrated that the Sun moves round over the Earth, its size is proportionately less. We can then easily understand that Day and Night, and the Seasons are brought about by his daily circuits round in a course concentric with the North, diminishing in their extent to the end of June, and increasing until the end of December, the equatorial region being the area covered by the Sun’s mean motion. If, then, these pages serve but to arouse the spirit of enquiry, the author will be satisfied.

Book Synopsis The Evangelical Counter-Enlightenment by : William R. Everdell
Download or read book The Evangelical Counter-Enlightenment written by William R. Everdell and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-21 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contribution to the global history of ideas uses biographical profiles of 18th-century contemporaries to find what Salafist and Sufi Islam, Evangelical Protestant and Jansenist Catholic Christianity, and Hasidic Judaism have in common. Such figures include Muḥammad Ibn abd al-Waḥhab, Count Nikolaus Zinzendorf, Jonathan Edwards, John Wesley, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Israel Ba’al Shem Tov. The book is a unique and comprehensive study of the conflicted relationship between the “evangelical” movements in all three Abrahamic religions and the ideas of the Enlightenment and Counter-Enlightenment. Centered on the 18th century, the book reaches back to the third century for precedents and context, and forward to the 21st for the legacy of these movements. This text appeals to students and researchers in many fields, including Philosophy and Religion, their histories, and World History, while also appealing to the interested lay reader.

Book Synopsis A Book of Cambridge Verse (Classic Reprint) by : Ernest Edward Kellett
Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse (Classic Reprint) written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William and Bill Where's William? Aunt Amelia, slender, clad in discreet widows weeds, leading a patient small boy by the hand, made her inquiry. "Bill's around somewhere," responded his mother from the porch steps. "Won't you come in?" Mrs. William Harvey, daughter-in-law of William Harvey the First, Rector of St. Jude's, relict of William Harvey the Second, mother of an emulous William Harvey the Third, continued her near-sighted progress between the flower-beds, reached the porch and stretched up a hand to her sister-in-law, Mrs. James Harvey, mother of another William the Third, whom his irreverent parents nick-named Bill. "Thank you, dear. I'll just send William into the house to play with his cousin, and you and I will sit here, if you don't mind."
