Book excerpt: SASSI ROBINS needs money. Lots of money. If she can't get her hands on enough by Dario Correa's deadline, she'll be forced to walk down the aisle at his side. Damning her father for dying and leaving her with his debts won't help. She needs a job, one that pays damn well. CAPTAIN SWAIN needs a cook. One who can cast off without delay, and he doesn't mind paying for the privilege. The waif who shows up for the job doesn't seem like she'll last a day on the waves. But the sweet-smelling wench has a fire that draws him in, mesmerizes him, and makes him lose his mind. Although Sassi knows she should resist the gruff, overbearing master of the vessel, it's a fight she can't win. On his ship, she's his to do with as he pleases… and his desires have a lot to do with pleasing her. But the fantasy can't last. Reality is waiting for her onshore and time is working against them. Sassi has to let her captain go to save his life and fight against the clock to save her own. Book excerpt: This major source of Chinese mythology (third century BC to second century AD) contains a treasure trove of rare data and colorful fiction about the mythical figures, rituals, medicine, natural history, and ethnic peoples of the ancient world. The Classic of Mountains and Seas explores 204 mythical figures such as the gods Foremost, Fond Care, and Yellow, and goddesses Queen Mother of the West and Girl Lovely, as well as many other figures unknown outside this text. This eclectic Classic also contains crucial information on early medicine (with cures for impotence and infertility), omens to avert catastrophe, and rites of sacrifice, and familiar and unidentified plants and animals. It offers a guided tour of the known world in antiquity, moving outwards from the famous mountains of central China to the lands “beyond the seas.” Translated with an introduction and notes by Anne Birrell.

Book excerpt: When Ansgar and Kristine lost their Wisconsin farmstead to foreclosure in April of 1935, Albert Victor Ravenholt, the oldest of nine surviving children, stepped up and provided the family with invaluable resources. This biography tells the story of Albert's remarkable life beginning on a small Wisconsin dairy farm, to his travels abroad and his work as a writer and foreign correspondent in the Orient. West over the Seas to the Orient begins as Albert emerges from his boyhood a stellar student, and it details the journey of his fascinating career-attending Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa; working as a steward at the New York World's Fair; becoming chief cook on the MS Agra, a Swedish vessel bound for the Orient; working as a convoy leader for Red Cross trucks hauling medical supplies from Lashio on the Burma Road; and becoming a United Press war correspondent for China/Burma/India. Containing a detailed family history, many photographs, and copies of Albert's publications, this biography tells the story of a man who applied his remarkable talents to help the Ravenholt family escape poverty; a man who guided, intervened, and supported the developmental activities of his siblings.

Book excerpt: This timely book is about how to design alternatives to reduce coastal flood and wave damage, erosion, and loss of ecosystems facing an unknown future of sea level rise. The latest theories are interlaced with applied examples from the authors' 48 years of experience in teaching, research, and as a practicing, professional engineer in coastal engineering. The design process takes into consideration all the design constraints (scientific, engineering, economic, environmental, social/political/institutional, aesthetic, and media) to meet today's client needs, expectations, and budgets for an uncertain future. The book is organized as a textbook for graduate students. And, it is a self-contained reference for government and consulting engineers responsible for finding solutions to coastal hazards facing the world's coastal populations. New solutions are included in the book that help people of all socio-economic levels living at the coast. Both risk reduction metrics quantified in monetary terms, and increased resilience metrics quantified as vulnerability reduction must now be taken into consideration to make equitable design decisions on hazard mitigation alternatives. In the Anthropocene Era, under 'deep uncertainty' in global mean sea level predictions for the future, today's designs must mitigate today's storm damages, and be adaptable for the unpredictable water levels and storms of the future. This book includes a design 'philosophy' for water levels to year 2050 and for the long term from 2050 to 2100. Multiple spreadsheets are provided and organized to aid the design process. This is an exciting time to be 'thinkers' as Civil/Coastal engineers.Related Link(s)

Book excerpt: RECOMMENDED BY ROWAN WILLIAMS, 104TH ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY WINNER (FRIENDSHIO) BOOK EXCELLENCE An award-winning unput-downable tale of two children building a boat from a log they find buried in the sand and sailing off to far-off fantastic lands in a stormy sea-driven adventure with their faithful - but accident-prone - dog Holly. There they learn much wisdom from a king who, like God, has many names'. After an incredible sacrifice of his dearest dream by the boy (now growing up) they return - another dream - to a family tea with their loved ones. The tale is a prequel and companion to Ruth Finnegan's award-winning epic romance 'Black inked pearl', here adapted for preteens but characterised by (in a simpler form) the same unique dream-like and enchanted style as in the original novel. Five Star Review (Readers' Favorite) Silver Award (Hungry Monster). "It really fizzes" Inspirational Christian fantasy fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Supreme Court ruling in Global Process System Inc. v Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Berhad (The Cendor MOPU) created a shock wave in the London marine insurance market, as the Supreme Court decision changed the boundaries of doctrine with respect to the meaning of ‘perils of the sea’ and ‘inherent vice’. Both phrases play an important role in the insurance market, affecting both assureds and insurers and their respective interests under all classes of marine insurance policies. This book reviews the origin of the clauses ‘perils of the sea’ and ‘inherent vice’ by tracing back through the early cases in order to understand the origin and noting how and why the changes occurred. It will examine how the law has been developed in the recent cases and discuss whether the Supreme Court case The Cendor MOPU has overruled the previous cases in terms of the clauses ‘inherent vice’ and ‘perils of the sea’. Considering the impact of The Cendor MOPU decision with respect to the Marine Insurance Act 1906, as well as the standard Institute Cargo Clauses, it evaluates whether the decision is consistent with these things and discusses the effect of the decision on recent cases and on the insurance market.
