Can a woman who's not sure life is worth living and a cynical cop who doesn't believe in anything he can't touch work together to find a monster before he adds the last piece of human flesh to his grotesque creation?

Download or read book Nietzsche's Teaching written by Laurence Lampert and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive interpretation of Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra--an important and difficult text and the only book Nietzsche ever wrote with characters, events, setting, and a plot. Laurence Lampert's chapter-by-chapter commentary on Nietzsche's magnum opus clarifies not only Zarathustra's narrative structure but also the development of Nietzsche's thinking as a whole. "An impressive piece of scholarship. Insofar as it solves the riddle of Zarathustra in an unprecedented fashion, this study serves as an invaluable resource for all serious students of Nietzsche's philosophy. Lampert's persuasive and thorough interpretation is bound to spark a revival of interest in Zarathustra and raise the standards of Nietzsche scholarship in general."--Daniel W. Conway, Review of Metaphysics "A book of scholarship, filled with passion and concern for its text."--Tracy B. Strong, Review of Politics "This is the first genuine textual commentary on Zarathustra in English, and therewith a genuine reader's guide. It makes a significant and original contribution to its field."--Werner J. Dannhauser, Cornell University "This is a very valuable and carefully wrought study of a very complex and subtle poetic-philosophical work that provides access to Nietzsche's style of presenting his thought, as well as to his passionately affirmed values. Lampert's commentary and analysis of Zarathustra is so thorough and detailed. . . that it is the most useful English-language companion to Nietzsche's 'edifying' and intriguing work."--Choice Selected as one of Choice's outstanding academic books for 1988

Book Synopsis The Guns of Victory by : George Blackburn
Download or read book The Guns of Victory written by George Blackburn and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Canadian Soldiers who lived through the momentous battle for Normandy in the summer of 1944, it was inconceivable that the conflict in Europe could continue for another eight long months. The war was won, they thought, and to win it they had been pushed to what seemed like the limits of endurance. But ahead lay not only an enemy with no thoughts of surrender, but also appalling battle conditions reminiscent of the legendary miseries of Passchendaele. This much-anticipated sequel to The Guns of Normany picks up where its critically acclaimed predecessor leaves off, and it continues in the same absorbing, startlingly vivid style. After the battle for Normandy, Blackburn’s 4th Field Regiment, with the rest of 1st Canadian Army, is called upon to pursue the enemy through the flooded Low Country, clearing the Scheldt estuary – a task equal to that of D-Day – and opening the port of Antwerp to allow for the huge influx of supplies necessary to press on against the German forces, now fighting with mounting desperation and ferocity. After enduring the worst winter in local memory, and spending yet another Christmas far from home, in the spring of 1945 the Canadians are thrust into the crucial Battle of the Rhineland, which will eventually allow Allied forces to plunge into the heart of the Reich. When victory comes, it is with no sense of triumph over a vanquished foe, but with the profoundest relief that this most terrible conflict in history is finally over. Told with Blackburn’s now trademark sense of drama and eye for detail, this story of the desperate struggle for Europe becomes as large as life. It should fully establish Blackburn as the author of an acknowledged classic on the Second World War. From the Hardcover edition.

Book Synopsis Trapped In Between by : Marilyn Elaine Lundberg
Download or read book Trapped In Between written by Marilyn Elaine Lundberg and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspirational true story of my life as an only child; and my HEALING from years of sexual abuse, anxiety, major depression, suicidal thoughts, multiple personalities, panic attacks, agoraphobia, PTSD, and essential tremor. Did you know that there are over 99 different after-effects of sexual abuse? I dealt with approximately 75% of those after-effects throughout my life. I have carefully outlined and detailed the keys and tools I used to unlock all the trauma. The first symptom that grabbed me was fear, when I was under age five. I became shy and withdrawn and only wanted to wrap my arms around my mothers legs and hide in her full skirt. Sucking my thumb was my only comfort when I was alone. Unfortunately, sucking my thumb caused buck teeth that brought on bullying and taunting by the other kids in the neighborhood and in school. The bullying and taunting made me want to be invisible. The shyness was so extreme that I didn't want to raise my hand in school even when I knew the answer because I would blush and then the teasing from other kids followed. The night terrors began in the fifth grade which included a big black bear which would chase me every night and devour me. The urge to be invisible brought on suicidal thoughts in junior high which I knew was wrong but life was just too hard. I obsessively worried about any social interaction especially going to school. I lived for Fridays which would give me at least two days rest. However, the worry returned Saturday night and was with me all Sunday thinking about Monday and returning to school again. Life as a teenager was difficult at home because Mom was displaying odd behaviors. She believed that people were watching her through the television and heat ducts. I wanted to help my mom but I didn't know how. Dad was my buddy. In the tenth grade an extreme explosion happened inside of me in the school lunchroom . I later learned that the correct terminology was panic attack. I rarely took lunches again around other people for fear of another panic attack. After high school graduation I moved out on my own still suffering from panic attacks, anxiety, obsessive worry, and major depression. Every year my problems got worse and worse and worse and I didn't know why. Finally I gathered all my courage together and sought help. After many unsuccessful sessions with doctors and counselors, I found one who actually helped me. He taught me tools and tips to deal with all my present issues. The healing didn't start until repressed memories revealed themselves to me at the age of 37. Confronting my abusers started me on a path of true healing. Today I live a life filled with Peace and Joy and Happiness, and I want everyone that has ever suffered from trauma to feel the way I do now.
Book Synopsis The Ritual of the Gathering Dust by : Chad Ellis Stephens
Download or read book The Ritual of the Gathering Dust written by Chad Ellis Stephens and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-03 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I consider my writing spiritual but psychological. Spiritual in the way that you can sense a bizarre void through out The Ritual, it's in the characters' inability to explain what has happened to them. Psychological because every character presents, like puppets, their own painfully perfect mental struggle which brings about an detrimental awareness to the fact that there is no way out! It should leave the reader questioning what is real and what is not. Who is who and who is not. The title of this novel is, The Ritual of the Gathering Dust. This is a tale of a cynically paranoid eighteen year old trying to learn the secret code of cool as he becomes the apprehensive subject to the social groups he encounters. Elsewhere, a depressed, cultist couple, recovering from loud, traumatic pasts, sit with an incurable boredom at a quiet, kitchen table. And while a mysterious hearse drives around without a clear destination through the murky streets of 'Broken Tongues Village' a determined marathon runner will attempt to go against a dead locked society. I introduce you to a world that craves fun, gets it, and scraps the bottom of the barrel for the last of it.
Book Synopsis Tears of a Despaired Heart by : Stanley Joseph
Download or read book Tears of a Despaired Heart written by Stanley Joseph and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delve into an emotionally heady stream of poetic storytelling as Stanley Joseph fans out his extensive life experience in a vivid collection that melts together love, longing and desire for an egalitarian society into one heart-piercing blend. Like fine chocolate dissolving in the mouth, Stanley Josephs lyrical expressions of love and inspiration leave behind a tingling sensation with poems rendering the heart a house brimming with inspiration in It Is True, yet contradicting himself when he protests that love is often full of unnecessary pain in Survivor of Love. Notwithstanding, he shows his strong capacity for affection in Will You Love Me Once Again?, defying rejection with the heart-fluttering declaration: If I change all seasons into fall/If I make you my only golden flower/The one which embellishes my spring/If I make you the only dream of my nights/The fantasy of my days, the journey of my life/Will you love me once again? Coming from an immigrant background, Joseph displays a heightened sensitivity to the happenings around him, enabling him to comment commandingly on discrimination and poverty while still maintaining poetic cadence, as he remarks, In Heaven,/Are there people starving? Stepping on each other?/I would like to know better, to inevitably conclude, Oh, what a life? Its only beautiful for some. Meanwhile, he unhappily comments that racism is a self decision of a modern day caveman and that he walks in a cutthroat world, a furious jungle full of lions. Oozing with feeling fused into weeping lines of lament or ripe words of inspiration, Stanley Josephs poetic musings of a despaired heart debuts dramatically into the genre with his unique poetic brand.
