Book excerpt: Predicting the volume change behavior of expansive soils has been a major challenge to the engineers in the past few years, due to the intricate coupling effects caused by different soil composition related mineralogy and pore void distribution to unsaturated soil property related parameters toward soil swelling. Hence, the main objective of this research is to develop models for realistic simulation of expansive soil behavior by accounting for inherent composition and unsaturated soil properties. In order to accomplish this research, eight natural expansive clays have been sampled from different active expansive soil regions across the United States. Basic soil classification and mineralogy studies were performed on these soils to identify the type of expansive clays and approximate mineralogy. The swell behavior of these clays is then studied by using different testing methods on soils compacted at different initial dry density conditions. A novel 3-D swell test apparatus was introduced to measure the volumetric strains of these soils under confining pressures. These test results are utilized for the development and validation of swell prediction models. Different soil composition parameters like clay mineralogy, soil-suction relationship and pore distribution are studied using advanced techniques. These techniques include the determination of clay mineralogy from chemical properties of soil, soil water relationship (i.e. soil water characteristic curve) from pressure plate and filter paper techniques and pore distribution studies from mercury intrusion porosimetry technique and X-ray computed tomography tests. Once the soil composition parameters are determined, analysis of test results was performed to identify the variation of composition parameters with soil type. Based on the soil composition test results three soil swell prediction models have been formulated in the current research. The first model was based on diffused double layer theory of clay minerals present in the soil. The second model termed as MHC model was based on two swell governing parameters which constitutes the effects of soil matric suction, void ratio change and clay mineralogy. The final model was based on the ratio of total surface area measured from clay mineralogy and mercury intrusion porosimetry. All the models showed reliable predictions of swell movements of soils that matched well with the measured test results.

Book excerpt: Seasonal ground movements associated with the swelling and shrinking of expansive clays represent a major cause of damage to buildings, roads, and pipelines. The processes that give rise to these movements involve complex ground-atmosphere interactions (due to combined effects of infiltration and evaporation), combined with highly non-linear hydraulic and mechanical properties of partially saturated clay. This thesis presents an integrated study to measure and interpret long-term ground movements at a greenfield test site in Mustang Ridge (MR), Texas, adjacent to toll road SH130. The site is underlain by almost 12 m of high plasticity (montmorillonite-rich) clay. We designed and installed an autonomous field station that measures local weather conditions together with sub-surface water contents, using WCR reflectometers, and deformations, through a novel system of string-pot potentiometers. We have obtained online data from the site for more than 3 years and observed a seasonal range of 50 mm in ground surface movements. We have investigated the engineering properties of the MR clay using samples extracted during site investigation and lab tests on compacted specimens of blended/reconstituted clay. These data are then used to calibrate constitutive models of suction-water content (SWCC), hydraulic conductivity and 1D compressibility for the MR clay. Numerical analyses of non-linear coupled flow-deformation in the partially-saturated soil column has been carried using a customized finite difference and finite volume framework (MPME) implemented within MATLAB. The MPME framework enables the representation of specified atmospheric boundary conditions (either as specified fluid pressures or fluxes) and hence, can simulate periods dominated by rainfall-induced infiltration or net drying by evapotranspiration. Parametric MPME analyses are used to interpret field measurements at the test site to explain seasonal fluctuations in average strains and water contents and hence, to interpret the active depth in the MR clay. The results show that surface cracks influence the transient response of ground movements by significantly increasing the hydraulic conductivity of the medium. This feature affects the response rate of soil deformations to atmospheric phenomena. This behavior was simulated through the use of a constitutive model proposed by Stewart et al. (2016a) that quantifies the development of desiccation cracking. By improving our understanding of sources of seasonal ground movements, the research provides the basis for a more robust design of foundations and roadbeds in areas underlain by expansive clays.

Book excerpt: Expansive soils are characterized as having high amount of clay minerals such as smectite, which lead to swelling during wet seasons by absorbing water and shrinking during dry seasons owing to moisture loss by evapotranspiration. The soil volumetric changes due to moisture fluctuations cause extensive damage to civil engineering structures, namely pavements, retaining walls, low rise buildings and canals founded on such soils. The primary swelling portion of the swell curve has been studied in significant details in previous studies. However, there is a dearth of literature concerning the secondary swelling phenomenon in expansive clays, which has also been observed in experimental studies. While it may be argued that the magnitude of secondary swelling is significantly less as compared to primary swelling, the characterization of the rate of secondary swelling is relevant for fully characterizing the swell potential of the soil. The rate of secondary swelling has been used to predict the long-term swelling of expansive soils. Conventional laboratory swell tests may take over a month for specimens to demonstrate secondary swelling behavior. A centrifuge based method has been recently developed at The University of Texas at Austin to achieve this objective in multiple specimens, and within less than a day. The effects of soil fabric, soil type, relative compaction, molding water content, gravitational gradient, and infiltrating fluid, on the rate of secondary swelling, are thoroughly investigated in this thesis. Four different expansive clays found widely in and around Texas, namely - Eagle Ford Clay, Tan Taylor Clay, Black Taylor Clay and Houston Black Clay, have been used in the study. Based on this extensive experimental evaluation, it may be concluded that secondary swelling behavior could be explained by flow processes associated with the bimodal pore size distribution in expansive clays. The rate of secondary swelling was found to increase with increasing molding water content and increasing compaction dry unit weight. The experimental results revealed that clays with a flocculated structure (compacted dry of optimum) demonstrate rapid primary swelling but exhibit less swelling in the secondary region, as compared to clays with a dispersed structure (compacted wet of optimum). The slope of secondary swelling showed a decline with increasing gravitational gradient. The rate of secondary swelling showed evidence of upward trend with an increase in the plasticity index and clay fraction of the soil. It was observed that soils which exhibit higher primary swelling also demonstrate higher secondary swelling.
