Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: Up-to-date information on socio-economic issues in contemporary Swaziland is not always readily accessible. This work fills that gap, by including contributions by Swazi scholars, based on recent research. Swaziland is of particular interest because of its culture and development, the special characteristics of small states and regional development in Southern Africa. Swaziland faces some problems found generally in developing areas but others are distinctive. The cultural dimension to development is paid close attention throughout.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using climate justice as an analytical tool, this volume examines the role of local mitigation and adaptation actions in Southern African in furthering climate resilient development. Climate Action in Southern Africa examines the intrinsic connection between local climate actions, climate resilient development and strides towards a just transition. The theoretical grounding in climate justice allows the authors to analyze whether current climate actions in Africa are truly effective for the poor and marginalized whose lives and livelihoods are impacted by a climate crisis largely not of their making. The authors also question the extent to which pathways to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 are achievable in Africa and ask whether this can be attained without undermining livelihoods and human development. Overall, the book argues that for any transition to be a just transition it has to be aligned with the pursuit of sustainable development and climate justice for current and future generations on the African continent. Drawing out key factors including politics, gender and migration, this volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change, climate justice and African development.

Book excerpt: Tourism and Politics aims to disseminate ideas on the critical discourse of tourism and tourists as they relate to politics, through a series of case studies from around the world written by specialists with an emphasis on linking theory to practice. That tourism is a profoundly important economic sector for most countries and regions of the world is widely accepted, even if some of the detail remains controversial. However, as tourism matures as a subject, the theories underpinning it necessarily need to be more sophisticated; tourism cannot be simply ‘read’ as a business proposition with a series of impacts. Wider questions of politics, power and identity need to be articulated, investigated and answered. While the making and consuming of tourism takes place within complex political milieux with multiple stakeholders competing for benefit, the implications are not fully understood. Literature on tourism and politics is surprisingly limited. This book will make a substantial contribution to the theoretical framework of tourism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns associated with globalisation of markets, exacerbated by the 'credit crunch', have placed pressure on many nation states to make their labour markets more 'flexible'. In so doing, many states have sought to reduce labour standards and to diminish the influence of trade unions as the advocates of such standards. One response to this development, both nationally and internationally, has been to emphasise that workers' rights are fundamental human rights. This collection of essays examines whether this is an appropriate or effective strategy. The book begins by considering the translation of human rights discourse into labour standards, namely how theory might be put into practice. The remainder of the book tests hypotheses posited in the first chapter and is divided into three parts. The first part investigates, through a number of national case studies, how, in practice, workers' rights are treated as human rights in the domestic legal context. These ten chapters cover African, American, Asian, European, and Pacific countries. The second part consists of essays which analyse the operation of regional or international systems for human rights promotion, and their particular relevance to the treatment of workers' rights as human rights. The final part consists of chapters which explore regulatory alternatives to the traditional use of human rights law. The book concludes by considering the merits of various regulatory approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Harrison has contributed to the academic study of tourism over the last 30 years. This book brings together a collection of his published material that reflects the role played by tourism in 'development', both in societies emerging from Western colonialism and in societies previously part of the Soviet system. The overarching theme looks at how, promoted as a tool for development, tourism can lead to conflict between competing elites, but can also empower groups previously subject to constraint by traditional authorities. Tradition is intensely manipulatable and always reflects power relations. Such pressure on tradition is but one aspect of tourism's wider social impacts. This includes changes in economic and social structure, which, for many, constitute social problems that need to be addressed. At the same time, 'sustainability', though apparently a worthy aim, can be a problematic concept, especially when applied to 'traditional' cultures, and may conflict with such ideals as egalitarianism.
