Book excerpt: A computer program was developed as part of an attempt to solve the neutron transport equation in as general a manner as present day machine capacity will permit. The iterative technique employed is equivaient to the EQUlPOlSE method modified by a form of block relaxation. In terms of mesh sweeps, the procedure is extremely rapid by comparison with a similar program. Two energy groups, 16 angular directions, and 400 mesh points, are provided. Anisotropic scattering is permitted, and an arbitrary onedimensional distribution of material properties can be used. Checks of the results of the program against published analytical results for both isotropic and anisotropic scattering were in excellent agreement. (auth).

Book excerpt: TIMEX solves the time-dependent, one-dimensional multigroup transport equation with delayed neutrons in plane, cylindrical, spherical, and two-angle plane geometries. Both regular and adjoint, inhomogeneous and homogeneous problems subject to vacuum, reflective, periodic, white, albedo or inhomogeneous boundary flux conditions are solved. General anisotropic scattering is allowed and anisotropic inhomogeneous sources are permitted. The discrete ordinates approximation for the angular variable is used with the diamond (central) difference approximation for the angular extrapolation in curved geometries. A linear discontinuous finite element representation for the angular flux in each spatial mesh cell is used. The time variable is differenced by an explicit technique that is unconditionally stable so that arbitrarily large time steps can be taken. Because no iteration is performed the method is exceptionally fast in terms of computing time per time step. Two acceleration methods, exponential extrapolation and rebalance, are utilized to improve the accuracy of the time differencing scheme. Variable dimensioning is used so that any combination of problem parameters leading to a container array less than MAXCOR can be accommodated. The running time for TIMEX is highly problem-dependent, but varies almost linearly with the total number of unknowns and time steps. Provision is made for creation of standard interface output files for angular fluxes and angle-integrated fluxes. Five interface units (use of interface units is optional), five output units, and two system input/output units are required. A large bulk memory is desirable, but may be replaced by disk, drum, or tape storage. 13 tables, 9 figures. (auth).

This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, advanced numerical methods for highly forward peaked scattering deterministic calculations are devised, implemented, and assessed. Since electrons interact with the surrounding environment through Coulomb interactions, the scattering kernel is highly forward-peaked. This bears the consequence that, with standard preconditioning, the standard Legendre expansion of the scattering kernel requires too many terms for the discretized equation to be solved efficiently using a deterministic method. The Diffusion Synthetic Acceleration (DSA), usually used to speed up the calculation when the scattering is weakly anisotropic, is inefficient for electron transport. This led Morel and Manteuffel to develop a one-dimensional angular multigrid (ANMG) which has proved to be very effective when the scattering is highly anisotropic. Later, Pautz et al. generalized this scheme to multidimensional geometries, but this method had to be stabilized by a diffusive filter that degrades the overall convergence of the iterative scheme. In this dissertation, we recast the multidimensional angular multigrid method without the filter as a preconditioner for a Krylov solver. This new method is stable independently of the anisotropy of the scattering and is increasingly more effective and efficient as the anisotropy increases compared to DSA preconditioning wrapped inside a Krylov solver. At the coarsest level of ANMG, a DSA step is needed. In this research, we use the Modified Interior Penalty (MIP) DSA. This DSA was shown to be always stable on triangular cells with isotropic scattering. Because this DSA discretization leads to symmetric definite-positive matrices, it is usually solved using a conjugate gradient preconditioned (CG) by SSOR but here, we show that algebraic multigrid methods are vastly superior than more common CG preconditioners such as SSOR. Another important part of this dissertation is dedicated to transport equation and diffusion solves on arbitrary polygonal meshes. The advantages of polygonal cells are that the number of unknowns needed to mesh a domain can be decreased and that adaptive mesh refinement implementation is simplified: rather than handling hanging nodes, the adapted computational mesh includes different types of polygons. Numerical examples are presented for arbitrary quadrilateral and polygonal grids. The electronic version of this dissertation is accessible from http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/148243

This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a new iterative approach to solving neutral-particle transport problems. The scheme divides the transport solution into its particular and homogeneous or 0́source-free0́+ components. The particular problem is solved directly, while the homogeneous problem is found iteratively. To organize the iterative inversion of the homogeneous components, we exploit the structures of the so called Case-modes that compose it. The asymptotic Case-modes, those that vary slowly in space and angle, are assigned to a diffusion solver. The remaining transient Case-modes, those with large spatial gradients, are assigned to a transport solver. The scheme iterates on the contribution from each solver until the particular plus homogeneous solution converges. The iterative method is implemented successfully in slab geometry with isotropic scattering and one energy group. The convergence rate of the method is only weakly dependent on the scattering ratio of the problem. Instead, the rate of convergence depends strongly on the material thickness of the slab, with thick slabs converging in few iterations. The transient solution is obtained by applying a One Cell Inversion scheme instead of a Source Iteration based scheme. Thus, the transient unknowns are calculated with little coordination between them. This independence among unknowns makes our scheme ideally suited for transport calculations on parallel architectures. The slab geometry iterative scheme is adapted to XY geometry. Unfortunately, this attempt to extend the slab geometry iterative scheme to multiple dimensions has not been successful. The exact filtering scheme needed to discriminate asymptotic and transient modes has not been obtained and attempts to approximate this filtering process resulted in a divergent iterative scheme. However, the development of this iterative scheme yield valuable analysis tools to understand the Case-mode structure of any spatial discretization under arbitrary material properties.

Book excerpt: I present a numerical technique to solve the time independent Boltzmann Transport Equation for the transport of neutrons and photons. The technique efficiently solves the discrete ordinates equations with a new iteration scheme. I call this new scheme the angle space distribution iteration method because it combines a non-linear, high angular-resolution flux approximation within individual spatial cells with a coarse angular-resolution flux approximation that couples all cells in a spatial mesh. This shown to be an efficient alternative to source iteration. The new method is implemented using the step characteristic and exponential characteristic spatial quadrature schemes. The latter was introduced in 1993 and has been shown to accurate for both optically thin and optically thick spatial meshes and to produce strictly positive angular fluxes. The discrete ordinates equations can be solved using the conventional source iteration method. However, it is well known that this method converges prohibitively slowly for optically-thick problems with regions that are dominated by scattering rather than absorption. The new scheme converges rapidly even for such problems. Numerical results show that the new scheme is reliably accurate for the problems intended, and that it is fast and efficient in use of memory. The angle space distribution iteration method is demonstrated in slab geometry, for a single energy group, using isotropic cross sections, with exponential and step characteristic spatial quadrature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerical solution is given of the transport equation for monoenergetic neutrons in a medium with isotropic scattering. The object is to determine the accuracy of the numerial methods generally used to solve the transport equation. The analyss is largely confined to the solution of the criticality problem for homogeneos slabs. A ritcality problem in X-Y geometry is also considered. The criterion of accurcy used is the difference between c, the number of secondary neutrons per collision required for criticality, and an approximation to c given by an N-parameter approximate method.
