Book excerpt: What is the relationship between the structure of existential sentences and their meaning? How do hearers interpret existential sentences using pragmatic assumptions? This study attempts to account for the relationship between the structure of existential sentences (ES) and their meaning. The study of ES has received a great deal of attention because the construction has complex syntactic properties, is associated with restrictions of a semantic nature, and provides an interesting area for investigation at a pragmatic level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, you will learn Swahili grammar, phonology, morphology, and syntax. You will be brought close to a perfect understanding of the dynamics of the language. Watch out for concordial agreement and noun classes. In Swahili, many morphemes are strung together as one word unlike in English, so do not be surprised when you encounter much longer words with only a few of what looks like prepositions, adverbs, and adjectives now and then. This is called agglutinating language. You will learn how to greet in Swahili, construct simple Swahili sentences while following the prescribed format, or what is called concordial agreement, and pick from a wide array of vocabulary in the minidictionary provided within the book. If you intend to visit Africa soon, lay hands on this book fast, and you will be speaking Swahili before you arrive. For those who are currently studying the language in schools, this book is a must-have. Read this book also for fun and a better understanding of the most popular African language and thence increase your knowledge of African literature and culture.

Book excerpt: For the whole of the last half-century, most theoretical syntacticians have assumed that knowledge of language is different from the tasks of speaking and understanding. There have been some dissenters, but, by and large, this view still holds sway. This book takes a different view: it continues the task set in hand by Kempson et al (2001) of arguing that the common-sense intuition is correct that knowledge of language consists in being able to use it in speaking and understanding. The Dynamics of Language argues that interpretation is built up across as sequence of words relative to some context and that this is all that is needed to explain the structural properties of language. The dynamics of how interpretation is built up is the syntax of a language system. The authors' first task is to convey to a general linguistic audience with a minimum of formal apparatus, the substance of that formal system. Secondly, as linguists, they set themselves the task of applying the formal system to as broad an array of linguistic puzzles as possible, the languages analysed ranging from English to Japanese and Swahili. It argues that knowledge in language consists of being able to use it in speaking and understanding. It analyses a variety of languages, from English to Japanese and Swahili. It appeals to a wide audience in the disciplines of language, linguistics, anthropology, education, psychology, cognitive science, law, media studies, and medicine.
