Book excerpt: Sutradhar is a dramatized retelling of events, myths and legends set across the arc of Indian history. In order to be relevant to the current social climate of India and the World, the stories are written from an authentic, firmly rooted Indic perspective, exploring a wide range of worldviews, sociological schemas and philosophical approaches within the context of the narratives. The seven tales that form this collection span multiple genres, from historical fantasy to cosmic horror, and are often tinged with dark, absurdist undertones. Reviews: "Our stories are the key to the continuity of Indic civilization. By continuously retelling and reinterpreting them for a new generation, we have kept alive this civilization. In this book, Ratul takes forward this important tradition - indeed, he is now part of that chain of Sutradhars." - Sanjeev Sanyal, Bestselling writer & internationally acclaimed economist “A rich tapestry of katha, rasa and niti woven on an intricate world built by the author's deep understanding of Indic philosophy and literature. Sutradhar makes for a complete reading experience that combines the author's poetical rhythmic style with a delightful story that keeps the pages turning. Ratul has opened a window to a new dimension of Indic fantasy.” - Saiswaroopa Iyer, Author "Mesmerizing prose! Stories told and untold came alive in all their splendour and vividness." - Abhinav Agarwal, Author – Predators and Prey, Curator of Indic Book Club "Set at different times in India's vast history, Sutradhar is a collection of brilliant short stories that are essentially about her people, their beliefs and disbeliefs, their desires and disappointments, their journeys through life. Ratul is an extremely gifted storyteller." - Bhavesh Kansara, Author - Twisted Threads

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring family stories reveals the rich history of a seventh-century Buddhist shrine. As a young girl in Bombay, Kirin Narayan was enthralled by her father’s stories about how their ancestors had made the ancient rock-cut cave temples at Ellora. Recalling those stories as an adult, she was inspired to learn more about the caves, especially the Buddhist worship hall known as the “Vishwakarma cave.” Immersing herself in family history, oral traditions, and works by archaeologists, art historians, scholars of Buddhism, Indologists, and Sanskritists, Narayan set out to answer the question of how this cave came to be venerated as the home of Vishwakarma, the god of making in Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Cave of My Ancestors represents the perfect blend of Narayan’s skills as a researcher and writer. Her quest to trace her family’s stories took her to Ellora; through libraries, archives, and museums around the world; and across disciplinary borders. Equal parts scholarship, detective story, and memoir, Narayan’s book ably leads readers through centuries of history, offering a sensitive meditation on devotion, wonder, and all that connects us to place, family, the past, and the divine.

This book was released on 2011-01-27 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a theoretical foundation for the analysis of discrete data such as count and binary data in the longitudinal setup. Unlike the existing books, this book uses a class of auto-correlation structures to model the longitudinal correlations for the repeated discrete data that accommodates all possible Gaussian type auto-correlation models as special cases including the equi-correlation models. This new dynamic modelling approach is utilized to develop theoretically sound inference techniques such as the generalized quasi-likelihood (GQL) technique for consistent and efficient estimation of the underlying regression effects involved in the model, whereas the existing ‘working’ correlations based GEE (generalized estimating equations) approach has serious theoretical limitations both for consistent and efficient estimation, and the existing random effects based correlations approach is not suitable to model the longitudinal correlations. The book has exploited the random effects carefully only to model the correlations of the familial data. Subsequently, this book has modelled the correlations of the longitudinal data collected from the members of a large number of independent families by using the class of auto-correlation structures conditional on the random effects. The book also provides models and inferences for discrete longitudinal data in the adaptive clinical trial set up. The book is mathematically rigorous and provides details for the development of estimation approaches under selected familial and longitudinal models. Further, while the book provides special cares for mathematics behind the correlation models, it also presents the illustrations of the statistical analysis of various real life data. This book will be of interest to the researchers including graduate students in biostatistics and econometrics, among other applied statistics research areas. Brajendra Sutradhar is a University Research Professor at Memorial University in St. John’s, Canada. He is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute and a fellow of the American Statistical Association. He has published about 110 papers in statistics journals in the area of multivariate analysis, time series analysis including forecasting, sampling, survival analysis for correlated failure times, robust inferences in generalized linear mixed models with outliers, and generalized linear longitudinal mixed models with bio-statistical and econometric applications. He has served as an associate editor for six years for Canadian Journal of Statistics and for four years for the Journal of Environmental and Ecological Statistics. He has served for 3 years as a member of the advisory committee on statistical methods in Statistics Canada. Professor Sutradhar was awarded 2007 distinguished service award of Statistics Society of Canada for his many years of services to the society including his special services for society’s annual meetings.

Book excerpt: Chemistry and Material Sciences naturally depend greatly on Synthesis as the initial stage for the existence of compounds and materials with desired behaviors, within the overall streamline of Design/Synthesis — Properties — Application/Function, and their relations. Such a general approach is of a too wide scope to be properly treated in a single set of publications, but this one on 'Synthesis and Applications in Chemistry and Materials' restricts itself by aiming to show the strength and international character of the current research in synthetic chemistry that is being developed in Portugal or abroad by teams that cooperate with this country. Hence, it gathers representative contributions of main Portuguese research groups and foreign collaborating ones. Nevertheless, the topic should be understood in a wide sense, being open to types of studies with significance on sustainable synthesis and applications in chemistry, materials and/or related sciences.

Book excerpt: This book traces the heightened time-consciousness that has emerged since the 1990s in popular Indian discourses – across cinema, television, print and consumer culture – and argues that these anxieties concerning time are symptomatic of the struggle between labor and capital. Drawing on critical theory, cinema and media studies and Marxist-feminist concepts, Kapur shows how the recent political-economic shift in India toward neoliberalism has been accompanied by a new emphasis on youth and a preoccupation with change, novelty and the acceleration of time, with profound consequences for conceptions of time, youth and the relations between generations.
