Book excerpt: Sustainable forest management (SFM) has become a prominent goal of current forest management approaches within the Unites [sic] States. A growing body of literature offers support for incorporating traditional and local knowledge (TEK) with current SFM methods in an effort to improve management planning and policies. By seeking Native American perspectives and incorporating traditional knowledge into current forest management methods, U.S. forest managers have the potential to increase their understanding of relationships between human, non-human, and the physical environment, thereby increasing their ability to manage our nation’s forests more effectively for all stakeholders involved. Using the qualitative data obtained from in-depth interviews and focus groups conducted with two Native American communities, this study examines the absent perspectives of Native American voices in the dialogue on sustainable forest management. This study argues that bringing in Native American viewpoints into sustainable forest management will add key missing perspectives to the national and global discussion. Results suggest that the abilities to maintain and manage natural resources are central to the survival of Native American communities, their spiritual beliefs, and their cultural practices, and that the human element in ecosystem functions is an essential factor in sustainable forest management from a Native American perspective.

Due to the inherent differences in priorities and perspectives of native forest 'users' and state forest 'managers' forest management has nearly always been characterized by disagreement, competition and conflict. Given the growing need for a resolution to the global issue of forest degradation, a number of solutions have been put forward, the foremost of which has been Collaborative Forest Management (CFM). CFM is a dynamic approach to solving environmental, socio-economic, and political issues among forest stakeholders including governments through the combined management of forest by all stakeholders. Proponents of CFM believe that this approach brings together the knowledge and resources of all the actors in a forest system, thereby increasing the scope for management, However, opponents to CFM argue that such a simplistic view of CFM fails to take into account the lack of equity between stakeholders which leads to further conflict. A satisfactory appraisal of the potential for CFM to promote 'sustainable' forest use requires an evaluation of the many arguments, both for and against the concept. This essay aims to do just that by reviewing the literature and presenting contrasting views for both arguments.

Economic globalization has enabled Western corporations to export timber processing jobs and import cheap wood products from developing countries. Timber plantations of exotic, fast-growing species supply an ever-larger amount of the world's wood. In response, many countries have established forest areas protected from development. In this book, Brett Bennett views today's forestry issues from a historical perspective. The separation of wood production from the protection of forests, he shows, stems from entangled environmental, social, political, and economic factors. This divergence—driven by the concomitant intensification of production and creation of vast protected areas—is reshaping forest management systems both public and private. Bennett shows that plantations and protected areas evolved from, and then undermined, an earlier integrated forest management system that sought both to produce timber and to conserve the environment. He describes the development of the science and profession of forestry in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe; discusses the twentieth-century creation of timber plantations in the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Australia; and examines the controversies over deforestation that led to the establishment of protected areas.
