Colonel Hudlow volunteered into the new jet bomber program and also became a rated Navigator and Bombardier, an early qualification for flying the B-47. Reader will share his experiences as a junior officer and as he advances in rank and responsibility. He became expert in his profession and likely has as many flying hours in B-52 as anyone. He was introduced at SAC Headquarters as The finest refueler in SAC. He devoted his Headquarters years to improving the B-52 fleet combat effectiveness, and crew safety. His first hand comments on the problems related to the Vietnam War are astute. He was very disappointed to have been denied command of a SAC Bombardment Wing. SAC wanted him to shepherd the B-1 airplane development. General Dougherty told him that he was the only officer in SAC with the experience and qualifications to bring the B-1 airplane into the SAC inventory. He tried to negotiate being a Wing Commander for a year then do the B-1 job. That was not acceptable so he elected to retire and enter the business world. He took a position with a major aircraft manufacturer and was very successful rising to Director of International Sales. He provides astute comparisons of commercial business versus the business of the military at levels from the Pentagon down. A fascinating read of success, Patriotism, devotion to duty, family and bonded professionals as a B-52 Combat Crew during the most dangerous era in our nations history, The Cold War.

Book Synopsis Northern Sandlots by : Colin D. Howell
Download or read book Northern Sandlots written by Colin D. Howell and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern Sandlots is the story of the rise and fall of regional baseball on the northeast coast of North America. Colin Howell writes about the social and economic influence of baseball on community life in the Maritimes and New England during the past century, from its earliest spread from cities and towns into the countryside, to the advent of television, and the withering of local semi-pro leagues after the Second World War. The history of sport is an important feature of the `new' social history. Howell discusses how baseball has been deeply implicated in debates about class and gender, race and ethnicity, regionalism and nationalism, work and play, and the commercialization of leisure. Baseball's often overlooked connection to medical and religious discourse is also explored. Howell begins with the game's earliest days when it was being molded by progressive reformers to meet what they considered to be the needs of an emerging industrial society. He then turns to the interwar years when baseball in the Maritimes became strictly amateur, revealing an emerging sense of community solidarity and regional identity. The game flourished at the community level after the Second World War, before it eventually succumbed to the new, commodified, and nationally marketed sporting culture that accompanied the development of the modern consumer society. Finally, Howell shows that fundamental changes in the nature of capitalism after the war, and in the economic and social reality of small towns and cities, hastened the death of a century-long tradition of competitive, community-level baseball. Howell has written an informative and insightful social history that examines the transformation of Maritime community life from the 1860s to the late twentieth century.

Book Synopsis The Shamrock and the Cross by : Eileen P. Sullivan
Download or read book The Shamrock and the Cross written by Eileen P. Sullivan and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Shamrock and the Cross: Irish American Novelists Shape American Catholicism, Eileen P. Sullivan traces changes in nineteenth-century American Catholic culture through a study of Catholic popular literature. Analyzing more than thirty novels spanning the period from the 1830s to the 1870s, Sullivan elucidates the ways in which Irish immigration, which transformed the American Catholic population and its institutions, also changed what it meant to be a Catholic in America. In the 1830s and 1840s, most Catholic fiction was written by American-born converts from Protestant denominations; after 1850, most was written by Irish immigrants or their children, who created characters and plots that mirrored immigrants’ lives. The post-1850 novelists portrayed Catholics as a community of people bound together by shared ethnicity, ritual, and loyalty to their priests rather than by shared theological or moral beliefs. Their novels focused on poor and working-class characters; the reasons they left their homeland; how they fared in the American job market; and where they stood on issues such as slavery, abolition, and women’s rights. In developing their plots, these later novelists took positions on capitalism and on race and gender, providing the first alternative to the reigning domestic ideal of women. Far more conscious of American anti-Catholicism than the earlier Catholic novelists, they stressed the dangers of assimilation and the importance of separate institutions supporting a separate culture. Given the influence of the Irish in church institutions, the type of Catholicism they favored became the gold standard for all American Catholics, shaping their consciousness until well into the next century.
