Book excerpt: The author unwraps a silent but challenging journey of a woman through different phases of her life as a daughter, a wife, a daughter-in-law, a sister-in-law, a mother and a widow. Susan, the central character in the story, goes through these phases and faces every challenge that comes her way. Like stable water in a river, problems come her way in the form of stones, generating waves of replications of sorrow. She, however, deals with all the problems, including her husband’s mental health and life-threatening ailment like HIV infection, family issues, financial difficulties, job problems, compromising on her dreams and the list goes on. She, through her insightful outlook and typical nature, like an Indian homemaker, sets an example of women’s empowerment and liberty. The book depicts many scenes that look quite familiar to everyone. The novel is set in West Bengal, India, and continues its journey with the characters as they progress from one generation to another. Reading this book is getting to understand the hidden and silent revolution that takes place in a common woman’s heart with personal sacrifice, compromises and tolerance. The book, however, does not stick to the dark side of life but, in the end, shows a brighter side of life too. Susan’s husband puts a full stop to his life quite early. However, Susan does not give up. She continues to look at the brighter side of life and sees her dreams come true through the achievements of her daughter and looks forward to continuing to be an asset to society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern American Indian life is urban, rural, and everything in-between. Lobo and Peters have compiled an unprecedented collection of innovative scholarship, stunning art, poetry, and prose that documents American Indian experiences of urban life. A pervasive rural/urban dichotomy still shapes the popular and scholarly perceptions of Native Americans, but this is a false expression of a complex and constantly changing reality. When viewed from the Native perspectives, our concepts of urbanity and approaches to American Indian studies are necessarily transformed. Courses in Native American studies, ethnic studies, anthropology, and urban studies must be in step with contemporary Indian realities, and American Indians and the Urban Experience will be an absolutely essential text for instructors. This powerful combination of path-breaking scholarship and visual and literary arts—from poetry and photography to rap and graffiti—will be enjoyed by students, scholars, and a general audience. A Choice Outstanding Academic Book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word doyenne signifies the various expressions of female, feminine, and feminist aspects of contemporary literature in India, through multiple theoretical frameworks. Contemporary Women’s Writing in India is an edited collection dealing with a range of these issues set in the society of Indian culture. Indian women’s literature is still a fertile ground for critical enquiry. There are three sections in the collection: Section I deals with specific instances in history, historical constructions, and representations of gender. Section II offers a varied spectrum of feminist critical discourse on contemporary Indian women’s writing, intersecting with the frameworks of post-colonial theory, deconstruction, perspectives on race and ethnicity, and eco-feminism. Section III touches upon the notion of the woman’s body and psyche through the varied perspectives of psychoanalysis, feminism, and post-feminism. By thoroughly exploring a range of issues, Contemporary Women’s Writing promises to take the reader by the hand, and journey through the unfamiliar but refreshing landscape of women’s literature in India.
