Book Synopsis Living On / To Survive by : Zsuzsa Baross
Download or read book Living On / To Survive written by Zsuzsa Baross and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-18 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those familiar with the work of Derrida will recognize the double term in the title as variations, in translation, of Derrida's untimely essay Survivre. To survive in this infinite mood and indefinite form that sets no limit to number, person, or time is at once the theme and the undercurrent that runs through the diverse texts gathered together in this volume. To survive, for such is our exceptional situation, also animates the act of writing: to shelter a personal existence and actualize the promise writing holds for saving something more than (bare) life. Derrida termed it sur-vie or living on. The texts date from different times and phases of the mutating epidemic. In chronological order, they register the progressive evolution and complication of the sense of this novel crisis. The first is contemporaneous with the immediate virus outbreak and with Agamben's provocative dismissal of the health crisis. The Two Transcripts are of video interventions that appeared on Jerome Lebre's YouTube channel Philosopher en temps depidemie, one of several platforms to call for critical discourse; a third intervention, completing the triptych, was recorded in French but never published. Here an extended, more developed version closes the volume. Engaging Derrida's Survie, it also responds to the recent death of Jean-Luc Nancy. At the center, anchoring the volume, is a complex text that can be read as a belated postscript to the first volume On Contemporaneity after Agamben, and / or as a premature preface to its forthcoming successor (The Time That Remains). It asks about the newly acquired sense of the World in Paul Celan's often cited last phrase: The world is gone. Living On / To Survive is essential reading for students and scholars in literature, philosophy and psychology.
Book Synopsis Affaires de Famille by : Marie-Claire Barnet
Download or read book Affaires de Famille written by Marie-Claire Barnet and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2007 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are families like in contemporary France? And what begins to emerge when we consider them from the point of view of recent theoretical perspectives: (faulty) cohesion, (fake) coherence, (carefully planned or subversive) deconstruction, loss (of love, confidence or credibility), or, even (utter) chaos and (alarming) confusion? Which media revamp old stereotypes, generate alternative reinterpretations, and imply more ambiguous answers? ...]Uneasy contradictions and ambiguities emerge in this bilingual collection of approaches and genre studies. The family plot seems to thicken as family ties appear to loosen. Has the family' been lost from sight, or is it being reinvented in our collective imaginary? This book proposes a new series of perspectives and questions on an old and familiar' topic, exploring the state and status of the family in contemporary literature, culture, critical and psychoanalytic theory and sociology.

Book excerpt: The first complete national and international survey in the English language of the clandestine newspapers and books published in the occupied countries of Europe during the Second World War. Writing in the Shadow describes the risks these people ran and the ingenuity and brilliant improvisation they used to hoodwink the Nazis and distribute newsletters to tens of thousands of people.

Download or read book Eranos Yearbook 70: 2009/2010-2011 written by Eranos Foundation and published by Daimon. This book was released on with total page 759 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 70th volume of the Eranos Yearbooks presents the work of the last three years of activities at the Eranos Foundation (2009–2011). It includes the papers given on the theme of the 2011 conference, About Fragility in the Contemporary World, together with talks given on the occasion of the seminar cycle entitled, Eranos Jung Lectures, which took place during the years 2010–2011 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Carl Gustav Jung’s passing. Eminent international scholars gathered to share their work, presented here primarily in English, along with some chapters in Italian. This publication carries additional special meaning in further consolidating the collaboration with the Fetzer Institute by presenting the manuscripts of the Dialogues on the Power of Love, held at Eranos between 2008 and 2011. This project follows the path of the original model of Eranos, especially the aspect of dialogue, searching for understanding and deepening crucial themes in the contemporary world. Contents: 2011 Eranos Conference: About Fragility in the Contemporary World 2008–2011 Fetzer Institute Dialogues at Eranos – The Power of Love: - Love in the Esoteric Traditions - Love in the History of Eranos - Love and Beauty in the Visual Arts - Love and the Social Bond - Love and the Musical Arts 2010–2011 Eranos-Jung Lectures The Greek word ‘Eranos’ means a ‘banquet’, to which every guest contributes. From 1933 onwards, the Eranos Conferences took shape in Ascona-Moscia (Switzerland), springing from the idea of Olga Fröbe-Kapteyn to create a ‘Meeting Place of East and West’. Under the influence of the psychologist Carl Gustav Jung and other prominent leaders of that era, the Eranos Conferences found their way towards symbolical, archetypal, and mythological motifs. The Eranos gathering is symbolized by its famous Round Table, the image and meaning of which inspired many of the leading thinkers of the 20th century. For more than 70 years, depth psychologists, philosophers, theologians, orientalists, historians of religions as well as natural scientists find at Eranos a unique place where they could meet and exchange views. The rich collection of Eranos Yearbooks bears testimony to an immense and original work accomplished in various fields of learning.

Book Synopsis Adornment, Masquerade and African Femininity by : Ismahan Soukeyna Diop
Download or read book Adornment, Masquerade and African Femininity written by Ismahan Soukeyna Diop and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on a unique theoretical framework informed by clinical case studies, Fanonian and Lacanian psychoanalysis, and decolonial feminism, to examine the concept of adornment in African cultures. The book discusses the construction of aesthetic feminine ideals and the evolution of such ideals within the history of colonization, decolonization and globalization. Through the analysis of adornments including accessories, hairstyle, clothes and fabric, the author demonstrates how they can reflect social status, and also addresses its symbolic function in rituals. At the level of the individual, it draws on clinical case studies to examine the Lacanian theory of adornment and masquerade of femininity, and the extent to which this echoes ambivalent attitudes towards women in society at large. In doing so it provides a nuanced analysis which reveals how body adornment can be a paradoxical demonstration of both strength and weakness. Building on the author’s previous work in this area, this book offers an important contribution to current debates in psychoanalysis, cultural studies, critical race theory and decolonial feminism.
Book Synopsis All the Feels / Tous les sens by : Marie Carrière
Download or read book All the Feels / Tous les sens written by Marie Carrière and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the Feels / Tous les sens presents research into emotion and cognition in Canadian, Indigenous, and Québécois writings in English or French. Affect is both internal and external, private and public; with its fluid boundaries, it represents a productive dimension for literary analysis. The emerging field of affect studies makes vital claims about ethical impulses, social justice, and critical resistance, and thus much is at stake when we adopt affective reading practices. The contributors ask what we can learn from reading contemporary literatures through this lens. Unique and timely, readable and teachable, this collection is a welcome resource for scholars of literature, feminism, philosophy, and transnational studies as well as anyone who yearns to imagine the world differently.
