Book excerpt: In The Arms of Baby Hop is a direct-no nonsense, but powerful expressive autobiographic collection of how hip hop music has shaped, inspired, redirected, and given strength to Mr. Kenny Attaway's life as he writes "I fell in love with hip-hop in 1985, and the love is still strong, the bond still is. With the exception of GOD and my mother hip-hop music has been the medicine needed for many sick and cinematic nights. Over the last 20 years many situations have arrived and without GOD, mom, and the music I know I would not be here to be telling you shit. My music helped me to understand many of the unkind facets of life such as death, discrimination, low self-esteem, poverty and whatever else your mind can fester to throw in the melting pot. Hip-hop has helped me to remember to forget, accept my reality, change my reality, and inspired me to change the world in some aspects. Thanks to hip-hop, excuse me baby hop, I have inspired and been inspired to set precedence in taking part in some of the most amazing things ever. In baby hop, I found a voice, a stage, a shoulder, a goal, a friend, but most importantly I found a purpose. With this book, In The Arms of Baby Hop, I found the strength, courage, and inspiration to open up and write about some of the most interpersonal experiences and road blocks in life over the last 20 years. I also found a way to thank baby hop for inspiring me not only to get through the road block, but to gyrate, giggle, respect the power of music and rejoice along the way. In short, I deliver to you In the Arms of Baby Hop: the unrecorded double LP (the rappin book).

Book excerpt: Matt Graham, star of the Discovery Channel's Dual Survival and Dude, You're Screwed, details the physical, mental, and emotional joys and harrowing struggles of his life as a modern-day hunter-gatherer. Early on in his life, Matt craved a return to nature. When he became an adult, he set aside his comfortable urban life and lived entirely off the land to learn from the smallest and grandest of all things. In this riveting narrative that brings together epic adventure and spiritual quest, he shows us what extraordinary things the human body is capable of when pushed to its limits. In Epic Survival, written with Josh Young, coauthor of five New York Times bestsellers, Matt relays captivating stories from his life to show just how terrifying--and gratifying--living off the grid can be. He learns the secrets of the Tarahumara Indians that helped him run the 1,600-mile Pacific Crest Trail in just fifty-eight days and endure temperature swings of 100 degrees. He takes us with him as he treks into the wilderness to live alone for half a year, armed with nothing but a loincloth, a pair of sandals, a stone knife, and chia seeds. He recounts near-death experiences of hiking alone through the snowdrifts at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and tells us about the time he entered a three-day Arabian horse race on foot--and finished third. Above all, Epic Survival is a book about growing closer to the land that nurtures us. No matter how far our modern society takes us from the wilderness, the call remains. Whether you're an armchair survivalist or have taken the plunge yourself, Matt's story is both inspiration and invigoration, teaching even the most urbane among us important and breathtaking lessons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Greenville, New Hampshire, a small town in the southern part of the state, Henri Vaillancourt makes birch-bark canoes in the same manner and with the same tools that the Indians used. The Survival of the Bark Canoe is the story of this ancient craft and of a 150-mile trip through the Maine woods in those graceful survivors of a prehistoric technology. It is a book squarely in the tradition of one written by the first tourist in these woods, Henry David Thoreau, whose The Maine Woods recounts similar journeys in similar vessel. As McPhee describes the expedition he made with Vaillancourt, he also traces the evolution of the bark canoe, from its beginnings through the development of the huge canoes used by the fur traders of the Canadian North Woods, where the bark canoe played the key role in opening up the wilderness. He discusses as well the differing types of bark canoes, whose construction varied from tribe to tribe, according to custom and available materials. In a style as pure and as effortless as the waters of Maine and the glide of a canoe, John McPhee has written one of his most fascinating books, one in which his talents as a journalist are on brilliant display.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a manual for Evangelical Christians who anticipate the “second coming” of Jesus Christ and understand that they may be called upon to endure some of the hardships of the End Times. It takes the genre of survival literature up a notch by addressing the moral, ethical and doctrinal questions that Christians should consider in planning for existential challenges in an uncertain future. The author doesn’t “reinvent the wheel” on common survival issues, but covers items of interest to Believers who want to develop a survival strategy that deals with the world as they find it, yet is consistent with their faith. Among these are: Does charity really “begin at home?” Is it righteous to use lethal force in defense of yourself and others? Does subscribing to the Pre-Tribulation Rapture mean that Believers need not be concerned about coping with the End Times?

It is how I overcame all the heartbreaking, brutal, and horrendous circumstances that I was born into in 1947. I saw it all in my first sixteen years: unbridled lust, gross immorality, damning lies, and terrible brutality by my father against me and my mother. He tried to kill me once but kept up a constant campaign of horrible abuses of my mother until I left home at sixteen. However, success is the best revenge! After three years of alcoholism, I pulled myself together and went back to school on my own. That was after I spent a year in Job Corps from 1966 to 1967. From 1975 to 1977, I went to Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville. From 1977 to 1980, I attended Virginia State University in Petersburg. I earned my BA and MA degrees. I studied above a master's at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville from 1980 to 1983. I did not graduate, but I learned valuable life lessons. I started to write in 1993 about what had happened to me over the years and how I used my dire circumstances as motivation to pick myself up and make my life better. I hope I am an example that will help others who are suffering through similar atrocities to be motivated to not give up but persevere and that they will, as I did, overcome anything they are being faced with.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The army guide that taught WWII soldiers how to survive in the jungles and swamps of the tropics. During the Second World War, Allied soldiers fought to survive not only encounters with the enemy but the landscape they found themselves in. Being posted to Southeast Asia and the Pacific to fight the Japanese meant soldiers had to learn to survive in the tropics, fighting and living in endless steamy jungle and perilous swamps. In this alien environment, men had to be able to take care of themselves rather than relying on their unit to supply their needs, something that did not come naturally to the many soldiers born and raised in cities. To help them, the British and US armies produced a number of official training manuals and guides explaining how to identify and fight the Japanese and avoid their deadly punji traps, as well as “jungle lore”: How to find and cook plants that were safe to eat Which animals and insects could kill them How to identify and treat tropical illnesses and diseases How to avoid the dangers of polluted water and cannibals The Jungle Survival Manual brings together the official manuals and information that enabled the Allies to fight in Burma, Malaya, Thailand, Indochina, Singapore, and the Pacific Islands—and win the war. Includes diagrams and drawings reproduced from the original guides.
