Book excerpt: Excerpt from Survival of the Pink Bollworm Under Various Cultural and Climatic Conditions Weather and fruiting conditions Of the plants at the time of the first frosts in the fall have been Observed to influence the potential overwinter ing pink bollworm population. When light frosts persist for several days before subfreezing temperature, the mortality in succulent bolls is negligible, whereas a sudden freeze following warm weather results in a high mortality. Examination of green bolls after a sudden drop in temperature to 24 and 21 F. On 2 consecutive days Showed 98-percent larval mortality. Similar temperatures occur frequently in the colder climates of the infested area, where many bolls are green at frost date. When temperatures are low enough to freeze these bolls, the pink boll worm population is greatly reduced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kill of Pink Bollworms in the Cotton Gin and the Oil Mill Most of the larvae of late-season generations of the pink bollworm remain in bolls and there enter the diapause, or resting stage, in which, under natural conditions, they live through the winter. Lar vae that survive the winter in the field do so mostly in waste cotton remaining after harvest. It has long been recognized that cotton infested with the pink bollworm should be harvested thoroughly and transported in a way that avoids deposition of waste along road sides, in order that as many as possible of the worms may be carried to the gin rather than left to infest the next year's crop. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pink Bollworm Control in the Western United States Avoidance of early planting can reduce the numbers of moths that survive to infest cotton in the spring. If planting is too late, however, it can result in yield losses, increased damage by late season infestations of insects such as the tobacco budworm, and increased proportions of the pink bollworm and other pests entering the overwintering stage. The most practical approach to reducing pink bollworm populations is to plant when optimal conditions for seed germination occur, produce a heavy boll set before the extreme summer heat reduces fruiting, and terminate fruiting earlier than it is now normally accomplished. At present, early termination of fruiting is limited to cessation of irrigation and to early maturing varieties. An irrigation termination of August 1 at Yuma, Ariz., reduced overwintering pink bollworm populations with no reduction in yield compared with later irrigation termination dates. This date would have to be altered for other locations, depending on soil type and other factors. Not only does the production of an early cotton crop decrease overwintering pink bollworm populations, it also may result in increased quality of the cotton by avoiding insect damage, boll rot, and storm damage that can occur in later cotton. Plant growth regulators have been used effectively to terminate cotton fruiting. These may have some advantages over irrigation termination, but none is registered for this use on cotton as yet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aerial Dispersal of the Pink Bollworm in the United States and Mexico: Production Research Report No. 96 Light traps have been used to detect the occur rence and dispersal of pink bollworm moths in many areas. Glick and Hollingsworth who operated traps in the lower Rio Grande Valley during the summer and fall of 1952, collected many pink bollworm moths; they trapped more moths in late August than in any other month. During one night (august immediately after cotton stalks in the area had all been destroyed, they collected an estimated pink bollworm moths. The following ni ht, the collected only and 8 days later Septem r 6) only 34. They concluded that because the cotton stalks had been completely destroyed, the moths had taken flight to another area more promising. Since at this time the prevailing wind was south southeast, they probably dispersed in a northerly direction. During the late summer of 1952, Glick and Hollingsworth (8) collected pink bollworm moths from light traps placed in the northeastern part of Texas; before this time the area had not been known to be infested. Their finding indicated that moths had migrated into the area. The moths were probably carried by the southerly winds from a heavy infestation on late cotton in the Corpus Christi area that was present in the fall of 1951. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pink Bollworm Management in Cotton in the Southwestern United States The first pink bollworm infestations in eastern Arizona were reported in 1926. At intervals thereafter, they occurred in other parts of the State and were suppressed through cooperative Federal, State, and industry programs, but infestations spread rapidly after termination of the cooperative efforts in 1963 and were found in the Imperial Valley of California in 1965. Spread was rapid throughout southern California and severe losses occurred by 1967. Infestations were detected in the high desert areas of Los Angeles and San Bernadino Counties in that year, and four moths and six larvae were found in the San Joaquin Valley near Bakersfield. Varying numbers of native moths have been trapped each year except for 1968, and a few larvae were found in the San Joaquin Valley in 1970, 1977, 1980, and 1983. However, by 1985, the San Joaquin Valley remains the only cotton growing area in the Western United States without a firmly established pink bollworm population. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Investigations of the Pink, Bollworm of Cotton in Mexico Bolls and squares were used, but the squares were found more satisfactory. The food with the young larvae was placed in vials plugged with cotton. The pieces of bolls would become discolored, decomposed, and unsuitable for food in one or two days, while a square would remain in good condition several days and the larva could be examined daily with less disturbance. Wire cages were also used over small potted plants and cotton plants in the experimental plat to check the laboratory results. The pupae were removed to glass vials with a piece of damp cotton in the bottom to provide the necessary humidity.
