Increasing male age structure in white-tailed deer populations has become an important objective for many state managers and private landowners seeking to improve hunter satisfaction while maintaining appropriate deer densities. Limiting mortality in the subadult age class is often the primary consideration, and regional differences in climate, habitat, regulations, and hunter behavior complicate understanding of how specific factors influence the risk of mortality. I used Cox proportional hazard modeling to examine the effects of mean distance to road, mean distance to habitat edge, dispersal behaviors, and landownership on the risk of mortality of a collared population of subadult males (n = 61) in Sussex County, Delaware, USA. Annual survival averaged 0.60 (95% confidence interval = 0.49 – 0.73), with hunter harvest accounting for 79% of all mortalities. Book excerpt: Columbian white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus leucurus, CWTD) are a geographically isolated and federally endangered sub-species for which there is a paucity of recent ecological information. I described and examined sources of variation in spatial use patterns (i.e. home range, areas of concentrated use, and movements), habitat associations, and survival for adult and fawn CWTD in Douglas County, Oregon. I radio-collared and monitored 64 adult CWTD and 36 newborn fawn CWTD from ca. December 1995 - September 1998. Locations for adults were obtained from September 1996 - December 1998. Locations for fawns were obtained from June - September, 1997 - 1998. Spatial use estimates for adults tended to be variable among deer. Mean 95% fixed kernel home range size was 74.5 ha (CV = 83%), while areas of concentrated use averaged 8.5 ha (CV = 93%). The sexes appeared to be partitioning space because males had larger home ranges, areas of concentrated use (which are analogous to core areas), and movements than females. Deer inhabiting human-influenced areas (suburban deer) consistently exhibited smaller movements and used less space than those away from human influence (wild deer). Mean home range size, area of concentrated use size, and distance between successive locations was generally greatest in fall and lowest in winter. Site fidelity to seasonal home ranges and areas of concentrated use was lowest between fall-winter and summer-fall. Unexpectedly, size of home ranges and areas of concentrated use were positively correlated with cover type heterogeneity. Annual adult survival rates averaged 0.73. Neither annual survival rates nor functions differed by sex or type. Survival over the entire 3 year study was low (0.39). Most deer died in winter from a combination of emaciation and disease and generally were in poor body condition. Oak-hardwood woodland, riparian, and oak-hardwood savanna shrub were the most frequently used cover types. On an annual basis, the majority of deer (31%) selected riparian areas. Book excerpt: Despite extensive research on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) specific research on the impacts of seasonal changes and climatic factors on movement, activity, and habitat use of adult males managed under a Quality Deer Management (QDM) philosophy is lacking. This research focused on movement, activity, and habitat use of adult male white-tailed deer on a privately owned 1,330-ha agricultural/wildlife research farm under QDM since 1994. Eighteen adult males were fitted with global positioning system (GPS) radio telemetry collars that provided detailed data of movement, activity, and habitat use in relation to seasonal changes and climatic factors. I looked for changes in seasonal patterns of adult males during four 3-week intervals between September and December. Seasonal changes focused primarily on pre-breed, breed, and post-breed periods predetermined by fawning data. Impacts of climatic factors focused on precipitation, barometric pressure, temperature, and lunar cycles and were analyzed using multiple regression (PROC MIXED, SAS, 2001) with repeated measures and random effects. Habitat selection was determined from GPS positional data overlaid on geographic information system (GIS) maps of Chesapeake Farms and calculated using compositional analysis (Aebischer et al. 1993). Mean home range was 299.6 ha with breed (298.6 ha, F6, 80 = 3.95, P = 0.006) and pre-breed2 (285.5 ha, F6, 80 = 3.95, P = 0.007) ranges being significantly larger than summer (114.7 ha). Breed (46.9 ha, F6, 80 = 4.15, P = 0.014) and pre-breed2 (46.7 ha, F6, 80 = 3.95, P = 0.008) core areas were also significantly larger than summer (13.8 ha). Intensity of use ranged from 12% during summer to 16.7% during post-breed with a mean of 14.8%. Adult males increased movement and activity from summer to the breed season with a subsequent decrease during post-breed. Certain seasons, like parturition and breeding, have been studied in detail; however, there is a general lack of specific, year-round information on herd dynamics. The availability of GPS-based telemetry has made studies of year-round movements feasible, and there has been a recent increase in data of this type. During 2009-2011, I assessed deer habitat use and movement dynamics in Northwest Louisiana. Barksdale Air Force base consists of 8,900 ha of bottomland hardwood and upland managed pine stands in Bossier Parish, LA. I placed GPS radiocollars on 15 adult male and 15 adult female white-tailed deer and obtained 1 fix per hour for approximately one year. I quantified annual and monthly home range sizes and habitat composition, and seasonal movement parameters for adult white-tailed deer. Adult home range and core area sizes were larger during the winter months than the summer months for both genders. Male monthly home ranges varied from 97 to 380 ha and were larger than female home ranges (44-181 ha; P 0.0001) in all months. Habitats were utilized similarly by males and females. Shrub habitats and hardwood bottoms were utilized more than expected throughout the year while thinned and wet hardwood bottoms and scrub habitats showed little utilization. Openings such as fields, food plots, and developed areas were preferred when present as patches in primarily forested areas but were avoided when found as large uninterrupted tracts of land. All other habitat types were similar in preference (P 0.05) and showed little variation among months. Overall, males moved more than females for daily movement rate and extreme daily distance. Movement peaked for both genders in the winter season around breeding. I found that movement rates and patterns differed greatly between years, perhaps more than variation among seasons. Ten out of 14 female deer made breeding season excursions outside of normal movements, presumably to seek additional mating opportunities. Although movements declined around the predicted date of parturition, I did not find that movements in the weeks surrounding known parturition dates differed from pre- or post-parturition based on vaginal implant transmitter expulsion dates (P > 0.0664). I also quantified fawn survival, home range size, and habitat composition up to three months of age. Overall fawn mortality was 50%, which is generally consistent with other studies in the southeast. I observed differences in fawn mortality between different habitats on base, with 5 of 6 fawns predated before 30 days on the hardwood-dominated western half and 1 of 6 fawns dying (from apparent internal trauma and subsequent starvation) before 30 days on the pine-dominated eastern half. Fawns in the hardwood ecotype had larger home ranges (P = 0.0011) and core areas (P = 0.0018) than the pine ecotype but doe home ranges and core areas did not differ by ecotype (P > 0.2578). Known parturition sites were closer to habitat edges (P = 0.0242) and developed areas (P = 0.0476) than random sites within doe home ranges, suggesting does were seeking areas of their home range with more cover at parturition. The majority of fawns utilized habitats differently than their dams, with fawns being located more often in developed areas and mixed stands and does being located more often in mature pine stands and shrub habitats. Movement and home range data suggest white-tailed deer at Barksdale are finding adequate year-round resources to meet their needs. Fawn survival appeared to vary considerably depending on habitat at the base, and the provision of additional fawning cover in the form of small openings or timber harvests in areas of mature forest may aid in survival. Female movement data and summer habitat use data raise the possibility that deer density is below target density for harvest management at the site. An accurate estimate of density should be obtained and it may be advisable to consider changes to harvest regulations to increase herd density.

Book excerpt: I studied sexual segregation in mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and white-tailed deer (Q. virginianus) in different environments and at different population densities to test the hypothesis that sexual segregation occurs in ungulates as the result of different reproductive strategies; females select habitat and behave in manners primarily designed to promote offspring survival, while adult males act primarily to maximize energy stores prior to the rut. Data collected for both species were consistent with this hypothesis. Mule deer segregated both socially and spatially. Compared to males, female mule deer used areas that were closer to water, supported superior browse species, and provided greater security for offspring from coyotes. Locally available resources enabled females to minimize movements, the apparent consequence of which was the depletion of forb biomass, the major diet class for both sexes. Males ranged further than females, a strategy that provided a diet high in forbs and high in quality. The occurrence of mixed-sex groups in highly productive areas suggested that males responded to forage availability and not females perse, and that the effects of localized grazing pressure by females may competitively exclude males from areas. Sexual segregation was not maintained by intersexual aggression in either mule or white-tailed deer. White tailed deer segregated socially, but demonstrated broad spatial overlap. During the peak of segregation (June-October), male behaviors were consistent with a pre-rut energy saving and forage seeking strategy; males used larger areas and made longer short term movements than females, but were less active overall and were relatively more active at night. Females were less mobile and foraged in smaller areas than males, particularly during fawn rearing periods (June-October). I also tested the hypothesis that male white-tailed deer segregate and range widely to scout potential mates and rivals. Based upon comparisons of areas used by radio-collared males and females during the peak periods of segregation (June-September) with areas used during the rut, this hypothesis was rejected.

Book excerpt: Concerns on behalf of National Park Service resource managers regarding ungulate herbivory on Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS) prompted this descriptive study on the population ecology of both the native white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and the non-native sika deer (Cervus nippon) that inhabit the island. Sturm (2007) conducted an exclosure study to document the effect of feral horse (Equus caballus) herbivory, deer herbivory, and horse and deer herbivory combined on plant communities. Sturm (2007) found that herbivory on some species could be directly attributable to either horse or deer. However, the effects of sika (Cervus nippon) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) herbivory could not be separated via an exclosure study design because of the difficulty of passively excluding one deer species but not the other. Thus, this research project was conducted to describe habitat use of sika and white-tailed deer and possibly attribute herbivory on some plant species to specific deer species if spatial separation in habitat use could be identified. I captured white-tailed deer and sika deer in January-March of 2006 and 2007 throughout the Maryland portion of Assateague Island. Deer were fitted with radio-collars and their survival and locations monitored via ground telemetry. Up to four locations were acquired per deer each week during early (May-June) and late (August-September) growth periods for vegetation on the island. Also, I estimated deer locations during a dormant vegetation period (November-December 2006). I used these data to estimate survival and harvest rates, document movements, and model habitat use. I captured and fitted 50 deer with radio-collars over the course of the study. Of these 50 deer, 36 were sika and 14 were white-tailed deer. Of the 36 sika deer, 10 were harvested, three were likely killed by hunters but not recovered, and one died of natural causes while giving birth. Of the 14 white-tailed deer, three were harvested, one was illegally killed, and two were censored because of study-related mortality. Annual survival was 0.48 (95% CI = 0.16-0.82) for male white-tailed deer, 0.74 (95% CI = 0.44-0.91) for female white-tailed deer, 0.56 (95% CI = 0.35-0.75) for male sika deer, and 0.86 (95% CI = 0.70-0.94) for female sika deer. The harvest rate was 0.12 (95% CI = 0.04-0.27) for female sika deer, 0.44 (95% CI = 0.25-0.65) for male sika deer, 0.18 (95% CI = 0.05-0.51) for female white-tailed deer, and 0.38 (95% CI = 0.10-0.78) for male white-tailed deer. Annual survival rates for both species were similar to what has been observed in other populations. Unfortunately, small sample sizes for male white-tailed deer limited inferences about harvest and survival rates, but harvest rates of females for both species were similar to other published studies. Hunting was the primary cause of mortality, and outside the hunting season survival was 0.98-1.00 for all species and sexes. I found that the home range area of sika deer was much greater than the home range area of white-tailed deer, but failed to detect any difference between sexes or among seasons. Sika deer also made long-distance movements and left the Maryland portion of Assateague Island. No sika deer left Assateague island during our study, but I did document the dispersal of a male white-tailed deer to the mainland. The long distance movements I observed on Assateague Island, especially relative to white-tailed deer, may reflect the ability of this species to exploit food resources that may be limited in quality or quantity, or both. However, I did not collect data to assess use of food resources by sika deer and whether this may have influenced long distance movements. I found both species of deer were less likely to use a habitat the further it was located from cover, which was defined as tall shrub or forest vegetation. For every 10 m from cover each species of deer was 1.23-1.38 times less likely to use any given habitat. Patterns in use of vegetation classes were similar across species and seasons. Relative to forest habitat, both species avoided dune herbaceous, disturbed lands, sand, and water categories. Both species neither avoided nor preferred developed herbaceous, low shrub, marsh herbaceous, and tall shrub categories compared to the forest category. However, there were consistent differences between the two species. During spring white-tailed deer were more likely than sika deer to use forested, tall shrub, disturbed herbaceous, and sand areas, but were less likely to use all other habitats. During summer, habitat use was similar between the two species except that white-tailed deer tended to use forested habitat more. During winter, white-tailed deer were less likely to use dune herbaceous, low shrub, and forested habitats than sika deer.
