Book Synopsis Survivability and Traffic Grooming in WDM Optical Networks by : Arun Somani
Download or read book Survivability and Traffic Grooming in WDM Optical Networks written by Arun Somani and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-19 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of fiber optic transmission systems and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) have led to a dramatic increase in the usable bandwidth of single fiber systems. This book provides detailed coverage of survivability (dealing with the risk of losing large volumes of traffic data due to a failure of a node or a single fiber span) and traffic grooming (managing the increased complexity of smaller user requests over high capacity data pipes), both of which are key issues in modern optical networks. A framework is developed to deal with these problems in wide-area networks, where the topology used to service various high-bandwidth (but still small in relation to the capacity of the fiber) systems evolves toward making use of a general mesh. Effective solutions, exploiting complex optimization techniques, and heuristic methods are presented to keep network problems tractable. Newer networking technologies and efficient design methodologies are also described.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, we have proposed availability aware routing and wavelength assignment schemes for optical networks under different survivability policies. The proposed techniques are evaluated by simulation. First, we have proposed heuristic and optimization driven connection provisioning schemes under shared backup path protection in resource plentiful environment. Then, the proposed schemes are modified to work in resource limited environment where connections arrive with differentiated availability requirements. The proposed techniques are compared to a conventional reliable connection provisioning algorithm. The simulation results show that the proposed techniques lead to lower connection blocking probability and better connection availability. Besides this, it is also shown that the proposed techniques also keep the resource overbuild due to protection in a feasible range. Moreover, the experimental results also show that the optimization driven technique leads to a decreased resource overbuild under resource limited environment for connection arrivals with differentiated availability requirements. The last part of this work deals with shared segment protection. Since there is no specific availability analysis method for shared segment protection, an availability analysis method for this protection scheme is proposed and validated by simulation. Based on this analysis, availability aware connection provisioning schemes are constructed, their performance is evaluated in resource plentiful and resource scarce environments, and the applicability of the schemes are determined in terms of environmental constraints.

Book Synopsis Investigation of Physically Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) Algorithms for Next Generation Transparent Optical Networks by : Timothy Allen Hahn
Download or read book Investigation of Physically Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) Algorithms for Next Generation Transparent Optical Networks written by Timothy Allen Hahn and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical networks form the foundation of today's information infrastructure. Current generation optical networks consist largely of point-to-point electronically transmitted links which switch between nodes and repeaters. There is a trend in optical networking to move from the current generation opaque networks toward transparent networks. Transparent networks use only optical devices, eliminating the costly need for OEO conversions. Unfortunately, transparent networks present a unique challenge in maintaining acceptable signal quality levels. This research is an investigation of RWA algorithms in transparent optical networks. We present RAPTOR, a custom built discrete event program to simulate optical networks. RAPTOR uses its physically aware modules to accurately calculate three of the dominant physical impairments. RAPTOR is fast and multi-threaded. We introduce several new performance metrics. RAPTOR enables us to study transparent optical networks in a unique and realistic manner. We conduct an extensive performance analysis of existing RWA algorithms. We explore many different traffic models, traffic loads, signal quality, and network topologies in a comprehensive fashion. We directly compare the leading RWA algorithms in a manner has not been done before. We studied new RWA algorithms in two fields: Dynamic Programming and Ant Colony Optimization. Our new Dynamic Programming based algorithm has the best overall performance in most scenarios. It is flexible and adapts well to all network conditions we studied. It shows good promise for future optical networks.

Book Synopsis Impairment-aware Design and Performance Evaluation of All-optical Wavelength Convertible Networks by : Hussein Chouman
Download or read book Impairment-aware Design and Performance Evaluation of All-optical Wavelength Convertible Networks written by Hussein Chouman and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuous growth of Internet traffic implies an increased power consumption due to the many optical-to-electronic (OEO) conversions required by routers and switches. Transparent networks could curb this uncontrolled growth, but keeping the data in the optical domain has two adverse consequences: physical layer impairments accumulation which strongly degrades the performance due to amplication noise and non-linearities; and the wavelength continuity constraint (WCC) to keep the opticalsignal's wavelength unchanged in wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) optical networks which degrades network blocking performance. Wavelength converters (WCs) can alleviate the WCC constraint, but the only commercially available devices are the OEO-based WCs (OEO-WCs), however, their cost increases with bit-rates. On the other hand, all-optical wavelength converters (AO-WCs) have been demonstrated in research laboratories albeit with a limited conversion range and a performance that degrades converted signal's quality. In this thesis, we design the transmission layer using two different modulation formats sets with different bit-rates ranges; and consequently different performance estimation models. At the network level, our analyses show that WCs' contribution depends on traffic demands serving ordering in the online traffic assumption; that using xed-alternate routing (FAR) or least-loaded routing (LLR) algorithms and first-fit (FF) wavelength assignment algorithm, AO-WCs give the same performance enhancement as OEO-WCs. Moreover, we identify an optimum AO-WC conversion range and cascadability which shows that LLR requires lower number of conversions per channel compared to FAR.
