Book excerpt: "The Nation has lost sight of its public health goals and has allowed the system of public health to fall into 'disarray'," from The Future of Public Health. This startling book contains proposals for ensuring that public health service programs are efficient and effective enough to deal not only with the topics of today, but also with those of tomorrow. In addition, the authors make recommendations for core functions in public health assessment, policy development, and service assurances, and identify the level of government--federal, state, and local--at which these functions would best be handled.

Book excerpt: Community & Public Health Nursing is designed to provide students a basic grounding in public health nursing principles while emphasizing aggregate-level nursing. While weaving in meaningful examples from practice throughout the text, the authors coach students on how to navigate between conceptualizing about a population-focus while also continuing to advocate and care for individuals, families, and aggregates. This student-friendly, highly illustrated text engages students, and by doing so, eases students into readily applying public health principles along with evidence-based practice, nursing science, and skills that promote health, prevent disease, as well as protect at-risk populations! What the 8th edition of this text does best is assist students in broadening the base of their knowledge and skills that they can employ in both the community and acute care settings, while the newly enhanced ancillary resources offers interactive tools that allow students of all learning styles to master public health nursing.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Survey of Public Health Nursing in Connecticut The scope of the investigation was necessarily limited as the survey had to be finished in two months. The number of public health nurses and the territory they covered was studied in proportion to the number of persons reached by these nurses. Little was done in considering meth ods of organization or of technique of the nursing personnel, as neither of these points could adequately be studied in the allotted time. More over, since it is now recognized by almost all that only a graduate nurse with special training in public health work should be engaged in'the important task of public health nursing, it seemed best not to try to touch the finer points of the technique of field work. Out of the public health nurses in the state, fifteen are not graduate nurses, and eleven of these are doing industrial work. This would seem to point to the natural death of such unscientific work, at least, in the field of gen eral visiting nursing, infant welfare, tuberculosis and school nursing.
