Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the possible relationship between instrumental music education in Grades 8 and 11 and critical thinking as assessed by the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment. The subsets that were examined included Reading (B): Interpretation and Analysis of Fictional and Nonfictional Text, which assesses the academic standards 1.1, Learning to read independently; standard 1.2, Reading critically in all content areas; standard 1.3, Reading, analyzing and interpreting literature, and Mathematics, sections C.1 Geometry- Analyze characteristics of two and three dimensional shapes, D.2 Algebraic concepts- Analyze mathematical situations using numbers, symbols, words, tables and/or graphs, and E.1 Data analysis and probability- Interpret and analyze data by formulating answers or questions (Pennsylvania Department of Education, 2009-2010). The sample consisted of Instrumental students (N = 50) and Noninstrumental music students (N = 50) over 2 graduated high school classes. The results indicated that the Instrumental music sample consistently outscored the Noninstrumental music sample when comparing the Reading B, Mathematics M.C.1, M.D.2, and M.E.1 subsections of the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment with significant increases noted from 8th to 11th grade.

Book excerpt: Considerable research indicates that classroom discipline is the most important factor influencing teachers' self-concepts of teaching effectiveness and job satisfaction. Yet, time is not allotted for critical reflection with peers closest to these practice concerns. K–8 general music teachers are further isolated from other teachers and experience discipline concerns specific to music teaching, concerns they need to reflectively problem-solve with job-alike peers. This qualitative study examined processes of guided critical reflection of 137 K–8 general music teachers from 16 states within researcher-led discipline and management workshops. Multiple sources of data included observation notes, participants' self-written case studies of their own classroom discipline concerns, peer-formulated written solutions and suggestions, and follow-up survey data concerning transfer of workshop techniques and ideas into individual teaching practices over time. The study addressed four research questions: 1) How do selected K–8 general music teachers critically reflect upon real-life discipline and management challenges within self-constructed case studies written and discussed during workshops? 2) How do these music teachers offer one another solutions within workshop problem-solving dialogues regarding these challenges? 3) In what ways, and to what extent, if any, do teachers transfer the techniques learned in workshop settings into their own classroom environments? If so, how? If not, why? and 4) In what ways, and to what extent, if any, do these music teachers engage in discipline and management peer problem-solving dialogues modeled in workshop settings with other teachers at their own school sites and district locations? Written data were tabulated and analyzed using a number of coding categories identified following multiple reviews of the data. Categories were collapsed into group types of discipline concerns, peer solutions, and follow-up survey information. This study demonstrated participants' ability to effectively engage in critical reflection and peer problem-solving about music classroom discipline concerns with job-alike peers. Findings also indicated positive changes in participants' classroom discipline, continued reflective practice, increased dialogue with peers, emergence of peer leadership, and improved communications and relationships with others at school and district locations over time. Based on these findings, implications were offered for music teacher educators, administrators, and professional growth offerings for music teachers.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this research was to investigate the contribution of preservice courses and experiences toward self-efficacy in the area of classroom management among novice music educators. The study involved 89 music educators currently employed in the areas of band, orchestra, chorus, and general music in grades K through 12 from a large metropolitan school district in the southeastern region of the United States. The researcher addressed perceived levels of preparation for classroom management in music classrooms as a result of preservice music teacher education experiences, system-sponsored induction programs for inservice teachers, and experiences with mentor teachers. Chi-square analyses resulted in data used to compare perceived preparedness with other variable data. Music educators perceived being inadequately prepared to face the challenges of classroom management during the early years of teaching. The recommended course of study, based on participant responses, is provided to address the expressed needs of the respondents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most states in the country have adopted a broad P-12 licensure for music teacher certification (Henry, 2005). This broad licensure puts a strain on music teacher education programs. Faculty create degree programs which must include coursework from internal and external influencers, all while trying to create a curriculum for preservice teachers that incorporates a wide breadth of topics, balanced with enough depth for teachers to be prepared for success in the profession. Harsh criticisms have risen about music teacher education programs shortfalls in trying to strike a balance between breadth and depth (Forsythe, et. al., 2007; Legette, 2013; Leonhard,1985). Much of the content within a music teacher education program reflect guidance from and is approved by a single external influence-the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The NASM is the national accrediting agency for schools of music who voluntarily choose to subscribe to this oversight. Their accreditation standards are the most recognized and supported in the country, and because of that accrediting function, NASM has great power and influence over music programs in higher education (Ester & Brinkman, 2005). However, research informing the requirements from the NASM and their effectiveness are scarce (Forsythe et. al., 2007). The purpose of this research is to explore early-career music educators' perceptions of the value, effectiveness, and relevance of their NASM accredited undergraduate music studies in preparation for teaching. A marketing research approach and subsequent analysis provides empirical evidence of novice music educator's perception of the efficacy of teacher preparation curricula as they correspond to each NASM guideline. Study participants (n=36) were early-career teachers (1-3 years professional experience) from the National Association for Music Educators Northeast Region who responded to a survey request. In the survey, participants used a 1-5 Likert-type scale to rate the importance of NASM competencies to their first years of teaching and the instructional performance of their music teacher education program. Lastly, participants rated the overall importance and performance of their music teacher education programs. Survey results indicate the overall average perceived importance of all music competencies from the NASM in music teacher education programs (MTEP) are rated higher than the overall perceived performance of instruction (3.61, 2.81). Analysis of the results also revealed a discouraging gap between the high importance of general, vocal, and instrumental music curriculum knowledge and the less than sufficient performance by music teacher education programs. A similar gap in laboratory and field teaching experiences in individual, small group, and whole group settings was identified. The results of this study indicate a need for more reflective research into music teacher education programs and the competencies required by the National Association of Schools of Music.
