Book excerpt: The study presents the results of a survey of the image management policies of 64 organizations: colleges, museums, government agencies and private businesses, with data broken out separately for each. The exhaustive study covers a myriad of issues including: cataloging and metadata, marketing and distribution, use of image management software and services, revenues and sales strategy, promotional uses of images, use of images on social media sites such as Facebook and on image sharing sites such as Instagram and Pinterest. The study also looks at the type of images maintained and how these images were acquired, through, for example, in-house scanning, outsourced scanning, digital creation at the outset, or purchased from a commercial vendor or other means. The report describes the type of digitization standards used, the use of crowdsourcing, spending on rights and licensing, methods of image retrieval available to end users, permissions protocols, discovery and access tools, digital preservation policies and more.

Book excerpt: The study presents data and commentary from 55 institutions that manage digital image collections, including museums, historical societies, botanic gardens, churches colleges and universities, government agencies and others. The study looks at a broad range of issues in cataloging, findability, marketing, revenue generation, technology use, rights, digitization, staffing, budgets, access, preservation, image collection building and many other issues of interest to administrators of large digital image collections. Just a few of the report's many findings are that: *Only 9.1% of the institutions sampled acquire images from imaging vendors; mostly this was done by college and university collections in the United States. *10% of the institutions sampled had annual revenues from image sales and licensing that exceeded $50,000.*No organization in the sample chose outsourced vendor scanning as their primary means of building their collections though 14.55% chose it second and 12.73% ranked it third*43.64% of those sampled use in house developed authority files. Government agencies and "other non-profits" were the most likely to use in house developed authority files while colleges and universities were the least likely.*Google Forms was used occasionally by only 3.64% of survey participants for crowdsourcing though 14.55% of the sample felt that they might use it for this purpose in the future. *More than 64% of organizations with fewer than 70 employees provided access to their digital image collections through Facebook. *We asked the sample to indicate which users that they permit to retrieve image files, first asking about all users. 32.73% allow all users to retrieve image files. This was most common among colleges and universities, of which 53.85% allowed it. *14.55% were using replication in their preservation policies, including 29.41% of non-US organizations in the sample.

Book excerpt: Planning and managing a self-contained digitization project is one thing, but how do you transition to a digital library program? Or better yet, how do you start a program from scratch? In this book Purcell, a well-respected expert in both archives and digital libraries, combines theory and best practices with practical application, showing how to approach digital projects as an ongoing effort. He not only guides librarians and archivists in transitioning from project-level initiatives to a sustainable program but also provides clear step-by-step instructions for building a digital library program from the bottom up, even for organizations with limited staff. Approachable and easy to follow, this book traces the historical growth of digital libraries and the importance of those digital foundations; summarizes current technological challenges that affect the planning of digital libraries, and how librarians and archivists are adapting to the changing information landscape; uses examples to lay out the core priorities of leading successful digital programs; covers the essentials of getting started, from vision and mission building to identifying resources and partnerships; emphasizes the importance of digitizing original unique materials found in library and archives collections, and suggests approaches to the selection process; addresses metadata and key technical standards; discusses management and daily operations, including assessment, enhancement, sustainability, and long-term preservation planning; provides guidance for marketing, promotion, and outreach, plus how to take into account such considerations as access points, intended audiences, and educational and instructional components; and includes exercises designed to help readers define their own digital projects and create a real-world digital program plan. Equally valuable for LIS students just learning about the digital landscape, information professionals taking their first steps to create digital content, and organizations who already have well-established digital credentials, Purcell's book outlines methods applicable and scalable to many different types and sizes of libraries and archives.

In this visionary look at the future of technical services, Mary Beth Weber, Head of Central Technical Services at Rutgers and editor of Library Resources and Technical Services (LRTS), the official journal of ALA’s Association for Library Collections and Technical Services and one of the top peer-reviewed scholarly technical services journals has compiled a veritable who’s who of the field to answer just these questions. Experts including Amy K. Weiss, Sylvia Hall-Ellis, and Sherri L. Vellucci answer vital questions like: Is there a future for traditional cataloging, acquisitions, and technical services? How can librarians influence the outcome of vendor-provided resources such as e-books, licensing, records sets, and authority control? Will RDA live up to its promise? Are approval plans and subject profiles relics of the past? Is there a need to curate data through its lifecycle? What skills will be needed in the future in technical services jobs?
