Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first book of the series Survey Methods in Educational Research, we have brought together leading authors and scholars in the field to discuss key introductory concepts in the creation, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of survey instruments and their resultant findings. While there are other textbooks that might introduce these concepts adequately well, the authors here have focused on the pragmatic issues that inevitably arise in the development and administration process of survey instruments. Drawing from their rich experiences, the authors present these potential speed bumps or road blocks a survey researcher in education or the social sciences might encounter. Referencing their own work and practice, the authors provide valuable suggestions for dealing with these issues “your advisor never told you about.” And all of the recommendations are aligned with standard protocols and current research on best practices in the field of research methodology. This book is broken into four broad units on creating survey items and instruments, administering surveys, analyzing the data from surveys, and stories of successful administrations modeling the entire research cycle. Each chapter focuses on a different concept in the survey research process, and the authors share their approaches to addressing the issues. These topics include survey item construction, scale development, cognitive interviewing, measuring change with self-report data, translation issues with surveys administered in multiple languages, working with school and program administrators when implementing surveys, a review of current software used in survey research, the use of weights, response styles, assessing validity of results, and effectively communicating your results and findings … and much more. The intended audience of the volume will be practitioners, administrators, teachers as researchers, graduate students, social science and education researchers not experienced in survey research, and students learning program evaluation. In brief, if you are considering doing survey research, this book is meant for you.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes a national survey of drug use and related attitudes among American college students and young adults. Its data were derived from an ongoing national research and reporting program. The surveys address two major purposes: (1) to serve a social monitoring function so as to characterize trends in certain behaviors in the population; and (2) to develop knowledge so as to increase our understanding of changes in behavior. Distinctions were drawn among demographic subgroups, recorded incidence of first use, trends in use at lower grade levels, and intensity of drug use. Highlighted are key attitudes about illicit drug use, along with perceptions of certain aspects of the social environment, as potential explanatory factors. Attention was focused on frequent drug use rather than simply reporting those who have ever used various drugs. This strategy serves to differentiate levels of seriousness, or extent, of drug involvement. The last decade witnessed an appreciable decrease in the use of numerous illicit drugs among high-school seniors, accompanied by even larger declines in use among college students and young adults. However, these favorable trends in student populations stalled in 1985, indicating the tenuous nature of these improvements. Of particular concern is the possibility of an increased use of specific drugs accompanied by a general increase in drug abuse by younger cohorts. (RJM)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable book examines the complex psychological processes involved in answering different types of survey questions. Drawing on both classic and modern research from cognitive psychology, social psychology, and survey methodology, the authors examine how survey responses are formulated and they demonstrate how seemingly unimportant features of the survey can affect the answers obtained. The book provides a comprehensive review of the sources of response errors in surveys, and it offers a coherent theory of the relation between the underlying views of the public and the results of public opinion polls. Topics include the comprehension of survey questions, the recall of relevant facts and beliefs, estimation and inferential processes people use to answer survey questions, the sources of the apparent instability of public opinion, the difficulties in getting responses into the required format, and the distortions introduced into surveys by deliberate misreporting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the uninformed, surveys appear to be an easy type of research to design and conduct, but when students and professionals delve deeper, they encounter the vast complexities that the range and practice of survey methods present. To complicate matters, technology has rapidly affected the way surveys can be conducted; today, surveys are conducted via cell phone, the Internet, email, interactive voice response, and other technology-based modes. Thus, students, researchers, and professionals need both a comprehensive understanding of these complexities and a revised set of tools to meet the challenges. In conjunction with top survey researchers around the world and with Nielsen Media Research serving as the corporate sponsor, the Encyclopedia of Survey Research Methods presents state-of-the-art information and methodological examples from the field of survey research. Although there are other "how-to" guides and references texts on survey research, none is as comprehensive as this Encyclopedia, and none presents the material in such a focused and approachable manner. With more than 600 entries, this resource uses a Total Survey Error perspective that considers all aspects of possible survey error from a cost-benefit standpoint. Key Features Covers all major facets of survey research methodology, from selecting the sample design and the sampling frame, designing and pretesting the questionnaire, data collection, and data coding, to the thorny issues surrounding diminishing response rates, confidentiality, privacy, informed consent and other ethical issues, data weighting, and data analyses Presents a Reader′s Guide to organize entries around themes or specific topics and easily guide users to areas of interest Offers cross-referenced terms, a brief listing of Further Readings, and stable Web site URLs following most entries The Encyclopedia of Survey Research Methods is specifically written to appeal to beginning, intermediate, and advanced students, practitioners, researchers, consultants, and consumers of survey-based information.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume, in a two-volume set reporting the results from the Monitoring the Future study, presents the results of the 1977 through 1998 follow-up surveys of the graduating high school classes of 1976 through 1997 as they have progressed through young adulthood. This current study, which draws the college sample in the senior year of high school, has considerable advantages for generating a broadly representative sample of the college students to emerge from each graduating cohort. It has "before, during, and after" college measures, which permit the examination of change. It also has similar panel data on the high school graduates who did not attend college. In order for this volume to stand alone, some material from Volume I is repeated. Chapters 2 and 3 in this volume are the same as Chapters 2 and 3 in Volume I, since one provides an overview of the key findings and the other explains the study's design and procedures. Chapter titles include: (1) "Introduction of Volume II"; (2) "Overview of Key Findings"; (3) "Study Design and Procedures"; (4) "Prevalence of Drug Use among Young Adults"; (5) "Trends in Drug Use among Young Adults"; (6) "Attitudes and Beliefs about Drugs among Young Adults"; (7) "The Social Milieu for Young Adults"; (8) "Prevalence of Drug Use among College Students"; and (9) "Trends in Drug Use among College Students." (Contains 30 tables and 66 figures.) (JDM)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Millennials--the generation born in the 1980s and 1990s--have been leaving organized religion in unprecedented numbers. For a long time, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was an exception: nearly three-quarters of people who grew up Mormon stayed that way into adulthood. In The Next Mormons, Jana Riess demonstrates that things are starting to change. Drawing on a large-scale national study of four generations of current and former Mormons as well as dozens of in-depth personal interviews, Riess explores the religious beliefs and behaviors of young adult Mormons, finding that while their levels of belief remain strong, their institutional loyalties are less certain than their parents' and grandparents'. For a growing number of Millennials, the tensions between the Church's conservative ideals and their generation's commitment to individualism and pluralism prove too high, causing them to leave the faith-often experiencing deep personal anguish in the process. Those who remain within the fold are attempting to carefully balance the Church's strong emphasis on the traditional family with their generation's more inclusive definition that celebrates same-sex couples and women's equality. Mormon families are changing too. More Mormons are remaining single, parents are having fewer children, and more women are working outside the home than a generation ago. The Next Mormons offers a portrait of a generation navigating between traditional religion and a rapidly changing culture.

Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 433: Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing documents and summarizes significant findings from the various experimental activities associated with full-scale accelerated pavement testing (f-sAPT) programs that have taken place between 2000 and 2011. The report also identifies gaps in knowledge related to f-sAPT and where future research may be needed. NCHRP Synthesis 433 is designed to expand the f-sAPT base of knowledge documented in NCHRP Syntheses 325 and 235, both with the same title of Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing. f-sAPT is the controlled application of a wheel loading, at or above the appropriate legal load limit, to a pavement system to determine pavement response in a compressed time period. The acceleration of damage is achieved by one or more of the following factors: increased repetitions, modified loading conditions, imposed climatic conditions, and thinner pavements with a decreased structural capacity which have shorter design lives"--
