Book excerpt: For 34 years from 1973 Peter Baxter was BBC producer of the hugely popular Test Match Special, and during that time he reported on Test matches from around the world. This funny and revealing book takes us behind the scenes as Baxter and his much-loved TMS colleagues do battle with local conditions and sometimes bizarre red tape to bring back home the latest news of England's progress (or otherwise) on the field. Book excerpt: Australia as post World War 2 English emigrants embarking under an Australian government subsidised plan to populate the country. It a was time when there were jobs for anyone anywhere throughout the length and breadth of Australia, thus making it possible to travel, work and explore during a more innocent time in a land climatically and socially conducive to such idyllic possibilities. The period covered is 16 years, from 1954 to 1970, of which five years are spent in New Zealand. Throughout this time children are born and a young family evolves. Many emigrants simply settled around the major cities for no other apparent reason than that it was where they had disembarked. For some this was traumatic and sometimes tragic. The book attempts – however briefly - to address such themes and the themes of emigrants in general. As the Vietnam War emerges an attempt is made to define Australia’s political choices in relation to her geographical environment. Ostensibly written for family and friends, the story strives towards a wider audience, but is entirely biographical and factual, except where a few forgotten names – very few – have been substituted with others.

Book excerpt: The Land Under: Seeing the Forest Through the Trees is a charming middle-grade adventure story about a boys journey to an underground kingdom of talking animals. Unhappy because of his parents financial difficulties, thirteen-year-old Frank finds himself summoned to the Land Under, a place that parallels our world but is only for animals. Fallen trees linked to forests aboveground are damming up the mighty waterfall, Naveah, which powers the rivers that keep the three kingdoms of the underground civilization separated. If Frank doesnt find a way to unblock the waterfall, the northern forest kingdom will be overrun by savage animals from the jungle and safari kingdoms. Its a race against time, the elements, and the balance of nature for an average boy with an extraordinary mission. Like a fairy tale in its intuitive simplicity, The Land Under grows before your eyes into a completely detailed world that feels so ordinary and real that it almost doesnt seem to be fantasy.
