Book Synopsis Regional Productivity Growth In China's Agriculture by : Shenggen Fan
Download or read book Regional Productivity Growth In China's Agriculture written by Shenggen Fan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study by Shenggen Fan makes three important and original contributions. It is the first study to report regional patterns of productivity growth in Chinese agriculture. There have been dramatic differences in output and productivity growth among Chinese regions. The second contribution is to measure the separate effects of technical change and institutional reform on productivity growth. Much of the rapid growth in agricultural production and in productivity since the late 1970s has been a consequence of an important series of institutional reforms. The third contribution is the first test of the induced innovation hypothesis against experience in a centrally planned economy. Regional patterns of productivity growth are consistent with the hypothesis that the path of technical change has been responsive to regional differences in resource endowments.
Book Synopsis Economics of Marketable Surplus Supply by : Ping Zong
Download or read book Economics of Marketable Surplus Supply written by Ping Zong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1998. Chinese farm households have been at the centre of the rural reform process since the introduction of the Household Responsibility System in the late 1970’s. There can be little doubt that, for decades to come, they will continue to be a focus of interest both in academic and political circles. This is particularly true in relation to their role of grain sector, when we consider the prominent position of grain in China’s political economy. There is also intense global interest in the impact of the reform process on the country’s future grain self-sufficiency and trade. This book is ambitious in both its scope and remit. Its primary focus is the behaviour of the marketable surplus element of farm households’ grain supply since the beginning of the reform period. The early chapters provide very valuable insights into the nature of the rural reform process; it then looks at the impact of the reforms on the structure of rural economy in general and farm households in particular. This part of the book is rich in statistics on the reform period. In the analytical section the emphasis is on the difficult area of household modelling, covering both theoretical and empirical aspects. Despite the data limitations, which the authors acknowledge, these chapters provide very valuable analyses of the grain price changes. In particular, their use of models which capture the interdependencies between grain marketable surplus supply is a genuine contribution. This book should be read by anyone with an interest in the rural reform process in China and will be of particular relevance to students, scholars and the policy community.

Download or read book Rural Employment & manpower problems in China written by Curtis Ullerich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 1978. The present study is an outgrowth of the author's puzzlement with an obvious paradox: Whereas the Chinese have always stressed the importance of their agricultural revolution in human, social and political term s, the community of Western observers has been increasingly fascinated by its more technological and quantitative achievements. While a great deal has been written about these latter aspects, Chinese invitations to take a closer look at the former ones have gone largely unheeded, particularly in the more economic-oriented quarters among China-watchers. This study tries to fill that gap.

Book Synopsis Chronicle of a Decline Foretold by : Ms.Mitali Das
Download or read book Chronicle of a Decline Foretold written by Ms.Mitali Das and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-01-29 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is on the eve of a demographic shift that will have profound consequences on its economic and social landscape. Within a few years the working age population will reach a historical peak, and then begin a precipitous decline. This fact, along with anecdotes of rapidly rising migrant wages and episodic labor shortages, has raised questions about whether China is poised to cross the Lewis Turning Point, a point at which it would move from a vast supply of low-cost workers to a labor shortage economy. Crossing this threshold will have far-reaching implications for both China and the rest of the world. This paper empirically assesses when the transition to a labor shortage economy is likely to occur. Our central result is that on current trends, the Lewis Turning Point will emerge between 2020 and 2025. Alternative scenarios—with higher fertility, greater labor participation rates, financial reform or higher productivity—may peripherally delay or accelerate the onset of the turning point, but demographics will be the dominant force driving the depletion of surplus labor.
Book Synopsis China’s Productivity Convergence and Growth Potential—A Stocktaking and Sectoral Approach by : Min Zhu
Download or read book China’s Productivity Convergence and Growth Potential—A Stocktaking and Sectoral Approach written by Min Zhu and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s growth potential has become a hotly debated topic as the economy has reached an income level susceptible to the “middle-income trap” and financial vulnerabilities are mounting after years of rapid credit expansion. However, the existing literature has largely focused on macro level aggregates, which are ill suited to understanding China’s significant structural transformation and its impact on economic growth. To fill the gap, this paper takes a deep dive into China’s convergence progress in 38 industrial sectors and 11 services sectors, examines past sectoral transitions, and predicts future shifts. We find that China’s productivity convergence remains at an early stage, with the industrial sector more advanced than services. Large variations exist among subsectors, with high-tech industrial sectors, in particular the ICT sector, lagging low-tech sectors. Going forward, ample room remains for further convergence, but the shrinking distance to the frontier, the structural shift from industry to services, and demographic changes will put sustained downward pressure on growth, which could slow to 5 percent by 2025 and 4 percent by 2030. Digitalization, SOE reform, and services sector opening up could be three major forces boosting future growth, while the risks of a financial crisis and a reversal in global integration in trade and technology could slow the pace of convergence.
