Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Anatomy, Vol. 3 of 3: A Treatise on Human Anatomy in Its Application to the Practice of Medicine and Surgery; Abdomen, Pelvic Cavity, Lymphatics of the Abdomen and Pelvis, Thorax, Lower Extremity The present volume completes this work, two volumes of which have been issued. Although the length of time required for its preparation is to be regretted, this has been justified by the complexity of the subjects treated. Dissection, illustration, and description Of the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic cavities present many difficulties not encountered in other parts. Cadavers wholly suitable for clearly instructive illustrations are not easily obtained, and under favorable conditions perfect dissections are tedious and difficult. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Anatomy, Vol. 1 of 3: A Treatise on Human Anatomy in Its Application to the Practice of Medicine and Surgery; Upper Extremity, Back of Neck, Shoulder, Trunk, Cranium, Scalp, Face This book has been twelve years in preparation. During this time, while no change has been made in its plan, its scope has been much enlarged, to meet a wider field than for which it was first intended. My original purpose was to furnish for students a text-book Of Surgical Anatomy, then much needed and not obtainable by them. 2i have made a book which will be serviceable, I hope, not alone to them, but to practising physicians and surgeons. While, I regret to say, this subject is much neglected in our American institutions, there came to be, nevertheless, during the progress of this work, an increasing and encouraging recognition Of its importance. In some schools the course was much enlarged in others new courses were established. In my own classes the work has constantly grown, until it has become not alone an adjunct to, and application of, descriptive anatomy, but rather the bridge between that study and practice of surgery itself. To meet these requirements it has not been sufficient for me to emphasize and clarify the facts of descriptive anatomy as required Of undergraduates. I have been compelled to bring to them the knowledge Of anatomy which I have used and as I have used it in surgical practice. My book has kept pace with this change and growth. I have in no case cut down descriptions nor the teaching devoted to surgical anatomy, nor directions for and procedure in dissection, but I have added much relating to surgical work. I have endeavored to regard fully the necessities of undergraduates, and at the same time have had in mind constantly the requirements which they will meet as surgeons in their chosen field, and have tried to make for them a sufficient work of reference for use in actual practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Surgical Anatomy of the Horse, Vol. 3 The method of dealing with consecutive treatment in Volume II. Met with such general approval that I have been led in the present volume to handle this branch of work at still greater length, in the hope that it will make the work more useful to the Practitioner and Final Year's Student. This has slightly increased the size of the volume for it has been done without in any way curtailing the anatomical descriptions of the parts, in order that this Part may be of no less service than the second volume to the student of Anatomy. With this exception the lines of Part II. Have been closely followed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive and original monograph, Professor Rene Louis presents in minute detail in one volume the gross anatomy, nerve supply, biomechanics, and microcirculation of the spine. He also presents the surgical approaches to the vertebral bodies and their contents. Professor Louis is a great anatomist and this book has been prepared from his personal observations, both anatomical and surgical. His studies have been meticulously conducted and contain much original research, for instance his work on the motion of the neural elements within the lumbar vertebral canal. The illustrations are neady all original and very often a photograph of the neural or vascular elements is presented alongside a drawing of a given important anatomical area. For all these reasons, this inspiring treatise makes a valuable contri bution to our knowledge of the spine and forms a basis for an under standing of the intricacies of surgical anatomy and approaches. It will be especially valuable to the spinal surgeon, but the medical student, the orthopedic resident (or registrar), and the anatomist will also find it extremely useful. Leon L. Wiltse, M.D.
