Book excerpt: Within recent years, in the course of increasing international exchanges in the field of Health Sciences, many questions on various aspects of its development in China during the past three decades have been asked by visiting colleagues from abroad, particularly on the development and practice of health care in China. It has been felt that since most of the medical publications have been in Chinese, a language inaccessible to the majority of professionals in other countries, a brief review of the clinical and practical aspects of health care in China written in both Chinese and English would be of service in introducing medical practice in China to the medical profession at home and abroad. The present volume is the result of collaborative efforts by specialists in the respective disciplines in clinical medicine of Sichuan Medical College, Chongqing Medical College, Shandong Medical College and Nanjing Medical College. Obviously, such an undertaking entailed the review oflarge quantities of publica tions of China and the contributors are to be congratulated for having successfully completed the selection of appropriate materials included in this space-limited volume.

Book excerpt: This brief discourse is an introduction to the historical development of medicine in China, whose influence on Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia was profound and even reached far west into the Islamic world. The authors wish to make the interested reader aware of China's rich contribution to the world growth of the medical sciences. Too often the view has been taken that the history of medicine began with the discoveries of the Greeks and those ancient nations from whom they learnt. The authors want to redress this view and acquaint readers with a glimpse of the concepts and history of Chinese medicine and hope that they will feel encouraged to delve deeper. ... this volume is a compact, tantalizing excursion through centuries of medical tradition, in a range of cultures ... it does make a long, complex and fascinating history accessible to medical professionals and students of Chinese history who may be tempted to delve further into this rich and interesting field. American Journal of Chinese Medicine If you want a concise, easy-to-read, easy-to-absorb summary of events and trends from the 29th century BC to the present, this compact book will comfortably and quickly answer many questions. American Journal of Acupuncture Concepts of Chinese Science and Traditional Healing Arts gives an especially useful account of the historical achievements of Chinese medicine. Book excerpt: Chinese External Medicine is a branch of TCM that is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the body’s surface, unlike TCM Internal Medicine whereby the focus is on internal organ systems. External medicine, or wai ke, refers to conditions that can be seen by the eye or palpated directly such as traumatic injuries, skin diseases, breast lumps, hemorrhoids, male genital problems and so on. Despite the common nature of many conditions covered by Chinese external medicine, until the publication of this book, little had been done to introduce these essential diagnostic and treatment methods to the West. Eight chapters in the text are devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of sores and ulcerations, breast conditions, goiter, skin lesions, sexually transmitted diseases, anorectal conditions, male urogenital conditions, peripheral vascular diseases and other external conditions, with 92 external conditions in total. Internal therapies, medicinal formulas, external applications, and acupuncture treatments are provided along with both Chinese pinyin and characters for easy reference. Sixty representative case studies are also presented here, making this the first comprehensive English language text on Chinese External medicine. We are sorry that the DVD content are not included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Essentials of Chinese Medicine is a text book intended for international students who wish to gain a basic understanding of Chinese Medicine (CM) at the university level. The idea of writing such a text was originated from the Sino-American C- sortium for the Advancement of Chinese Medicine (SACACM), which was founded in February 2000. In 1995, the British Hong Kong Administration set up a Prepa- tory Committee for the Development of Chinese Medicine to look into ways of bringing Chinese medical practice and herbal trade under proper control and r- ulation. After the reuni?cation of Hong Kong with mainland China in 1997, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region continued the efforts to uplift the practice of CM to a fully professional level through legislation. To help bring up a new generation of professional CM practitioners, the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) obtained approval from the Government’s univ- sity funding authority to develop a School of Chinese Medicine to prepare students who will meet the future professional requirements through public examinations. In order to establish itself quickly as a rigorous provider of university level CM education, HKBU sought alliance with eight major CM universities in the Chinese Mainland, and one US university which was interested in developing CM education within its medical college. As a result, the Consortium known as SACACM was formed, with ten founding institutions from Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Shandong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Heilongjiang, Hong Kong, and the United States.

It was the textbook for the OB-GYN class at the Zhejiang College of Chinese Medicine in Hangzhou, PRChina. It covers the disease causes and mechanisms and the pattern discrimination treatment for 35 commonly encountered complaints. The book is divided into five sections: 1) menstrual diseases, 2) abnormal vaginal discharge diseases, 3) gestational & birthing diseases, 4) postpartum diseases, and 5) miscellaneous diseases. Because Chinese gynecology in China means treatment via the internal administration of Chinese herbs, all the treatments in this book are herbal ones. If one wants to buy a single book covering all of Chinese gynecology in an introductory, survey fashion, this is the book to buy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acupuncture is part of traditional Chinese medicine, being wholly described and published around 100 A.D. Modern acupuncture is based on Chinese publications from the Song dynasty period. This treatment arrived in the Western world in the 17th century, and was associated at first with surgery. The transmission of Chinese medicine into the contemporary world and Western languages presents a significant challenge for its preservation and evolution as a distinct medical discipline. The practice of acupuncture is now considered a liberal profession, despite the significant increase in this therapeutics practice recorded between 2000 and 2010. Traditional Chinese medicine is an alternative method to treat several illnesses and diseases, including endometriosis and cerebral ischemia. This book discusses the practices and outcomes of Chinese medicine.
