It summarizes the activities on the grant to develop novel surfactants for enhanced oil recovery, and represents the first quarterly report for the project. During the period covered by this report, considerable effort was spent in arrangements for procuring equipment, chemicals and in educating students about the substance of the project. Unfortunately, the major equipment order to fully implement the project have not yet been delivered. A few surfactants, however have either been synthesized in the Morgan State laboratories or purchased from commercial manufacturers. South Carolina State continued to plan and set its laboratories during the period, and significant project administrative and management support was provided by the Institute for College Research Development and Support. As a starting point in the education, training and eventual proficiency in surfactant synthesis, the following cationic surfactants have been successfully synthesized: cetyltriethylammonium bromide, cetyltripropylammonium bromide and cetyltributylammonium bromide. NMR analysis of these surfactants was also carried out. In the absence of the major equipment, the critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) of the surfactants to be synthesized, were determined using the conductometric method. The CMC determination was necessary because there is a correlation between surface tension reduction and critical micelle concentration of surfactants. Results are listed.

Book excerpt: Aqueous dihexadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DHDAB) surfactant was used to form an emulsion with samples of crude oil (Burbank Crude Oil) supplied by Phillips Petroleum Company. Influence of the surfactant concentration in the uptake of the oil in the aqueous phase was studied. It was observed that as weight of the surfactant solubilized in the oil-water system increases the volume of oil solubilized in the aqueous phase increases. Viscosity of the emulsion was also observed to increase with an increase in the weight of surfactant added. A co-surfactant, n-butyl alcohol was added and its effect was to reverse the observation described above. The uptake of aqueous surfactant into the oil phase was very evident. Salinity scan of this system showed that the addition of sodium chloride, NaCl, produced a middle phase whose volume increased with an increase in the amount of salt added. Also there was observed, a remarkable high salinity tolerance. Rheology of the emulsion showed typical non-Newtonian behavior. The emulsion was observed to exhibit a pseudoplastic profile. The shear-thinning profile was evident from the observed viscosity-shear rate experiment.

Book excerpt: The overall objective of this project is to develop a very cost-effective method for formulating a successful surfactant-enhanced alkaline flood by appropriately choosing mixed alkalis which form inexpensive buffers to obtain the desired pH (between 8.5 and 12.0) for ultimate spontaneous emulsification and ultra-low tension. In addition, the novel concept of pH gradient design to optimize flood water conditions will be tested. This quarter we investigated the phase behavior and the regions where in the middle phase occurs. Middle phase was found to go through a maximum with pH, sodium concentration and surfactant concentration. The optimum pH is about 12.0 to 13.5, the optimum sodium concentration is about 0.513 mol/liter, and the optimum surfactant concentration is about 0.2%. The effect of surfactant type was also investigated. Petrostep B-105 was found to give the most middle phase production. A white precipitate was observed in some two-phase samples. For a given surfactant concentration, as pH is increased, the maximum volume of middle phase shifts to higher salinities. For a given pH, as surfactant concentration is increased, the maximum volume of middle phase shifts to higher salinities.
