The research presented in this book aims to identify the processes and physiographic factors controlling the spatial variability and temporal dynamics of the exfiltration of saline groundwater to surface water, and hence the contribution of saline groundwater to surface water salinity. Topics covered include a paleo-hydrogeological model simulation of the Holocene evolution of groundwater salinity as a result of paleo-geographic changes; surface water salinity dynamics in a densely-drained lowland catchment; hydrograph separation in an agricultural catchment; observations of heads, flow, solute concentration and temperature to constrain a detailed, variable-density groundwater flow and transport model; and a model to simulate the salinity dynamics of exfiltrating groundwater to support operational water management of freshwater resources in coastal lowlands. The book further outlines the implications of these findings for freshwater management in the Netherlands. Book excerpt: Agriculture in the Central Valley of California is a potential contributor of non-point source pollution to surface waters via the groundwater pathway. This work presents a relatively simple method and inexpensive apparatus for quantifying local groundwater discharge into rivers using heat as a tracer. Two transects along a known gaining reach of the Lower Merced River were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the groundwater discharge monitoring instruments, known as Temperature Javelins, over three months. In terms of fulfilling deployment objectives, Temperature Javelins proved to be low cost, easy to install, and yielded easily interpretable data related to groundwater-surface water discharges. Groundwater discharge velocities were found to vary over time seasonally and spatially (on a scale of meters). Discharges ranged from 0.1 to 6.8 cm/day with higher discharge velocities found on the northern side of the river. These values are consistent with previous values obtained at the same site using other methods. Corresponding hyporheic water samples were collected to investigate solute transport (specifically nitrate) by the discharging water. Nitrate concentrations ranged from nondetectable to 50 ppm in these samples, where elevated values appear to be associated with groundwater entering on the north side of the river. Elevated nitrate flow lines in the hyporheic zone correspond with high discharge areas and alternate with ammonium enriched columns and low groundwater discharge. It is hypothesized that nitrification cells are induced by groundwater-surface water interactions. Testing of this hypothesis is proposed as a subject of further research.

Introduction of new bioavailable nutrients from SGD into coastal waters can alter a coastal system's nutrient balance, and may result in increases in phytoplankton or macroalgae growth that in turn can cause other ecological shifts in biological species' composition (Valiela et al., 1990). In order to attempt a first investigation of the possible relative impact(s) of the amount, flux, and residence times of SGD and SGD-derived nutrients on coastal phytoplankton in the oligotrophic coastal waters off Hawaii, detailed studies were completed to compare the flux and residence times of SGD and SGD-derived nutrients on biological processes at three sites on the leeward-side of the Koolau Mountains along the southern shore of Oahu (the Ala Wai Canal, Black Point, and Wailupe Beach) and at one site on the leeward-side of Hualalai, on the western side of the Big Island of Hawaii (Honokohau Harbor, Hawaii). At each site, radon and short-lived radium isotopes were used to calculate the flux of SGD and SGD-derived constituents into the coastal areas and their residence times. The rate of uptake of 13C by photoautotrophs was determined using in situ incubation experiments with addition of 13C-labeled bicarbonate at most sites and was used as a relative indicator of photosynthetic activity and its response to potential input of SGD-derived nutrients At study sites along the southern shore of Oahu, nutrient fluxes for a shoreline length of 1.18 km was 281 PO43−, 113,015 Si(OH)4, and 10,505 NO3− mol/d, respectively. Nutrient fluxes for Honokohau Harbor, estimated to have a 375-m wide seepage face, were 194 PO43−, 31,998 Si(OH)4, and 3,123 NO3− mol/d respectively. Photosynthetic carbon production rates were significantly higher for the Ala Wai Canal (1.39 [micro]gC/L/h) than for Honokohau Harbor (0.10[micro]gC/L/h). Using these carbon uptake rates and assuming a Redfield C:N:P ratio of 106:16:1, nitrogen and phosphorus uptake rates for both the Ala Wai Canal and Honokohau Harbor were less than 2% of the nutrients delivered by SGD. Variation in the N:P ratios observed in the groundwater and coastal waters could imply nutrient limitation. We found for the restricted estuarine-like embayments of the Ala Wai canal (water mass residence time 10-13 days) and Honokohau Harbor (water mass residence time 0.5 -6 days), that primary productivity is not controlled by the availability of nutrients (nutrient supply> phytoplankton demand in both settings), but is nonetheless directly linked to each water mass' residence time. As nutrients are in excess of demand in both settings, we conclude that it is the physical longevity and residence time of the phytoplankton itself that ultimately controls each basin's ultimate level of sustained primary productivity.

Nutrient inputs can be difficult to constrain at the coastal interface where multiple waters mix, including river water, groundwater, and lake or ocean water. At coastal interfaces, rivers distribute their nutrient loads across delta wetlands, where processes like anaerobic respiration and plant uptake may reduce nutrient concentrations. Beneath the coast, groundwater also carries nutrients offshore, where biogeochemical reactions alter the nutrient chemistry and discharge rates are difficult to measure. I aim to improve the assessment of nutrient loads to coastal waters in these challenging environments through two case studies. First, I estimate groundwater discharge, a previously unaccounted source of nutrients, to the United States Great Lakes coast using high-resolution geospatial analysis. By integrating land use data, I also identify areas of the coast that are vulnerable to high nutrient loads from groundwater. My analysis shows that almost one-third of Lake Erie’s United States coastline is vulnerable to contamination from groundwater nutrient sources. By collecting field measurements at a vulnerable beach site, I show that the nitrogen load from groundwater exceeds 1 gram/day/meter of coastline, which constitutes a small but non-negligible source to Lake Erie. In the second case study, I use benthic chambers to measure nitrogen removal rates in a coastal wetland in Wax Lake Delta, Louisiana. Results suggest that summertime nitrate removal kinetics are highly correlated with a widely available remotely-sensed vegetation index (NDVI). Heavily vegetated, submerged levees at intermediate elevations in the delta are thus predicted to be the most reactive habitats. Though less reactive, larger channels primarily on the eastern half of the delta may contribute most to nitrate removal, as they receive the greatest mass fluxes of nitrate. Numerical simulations of reactive nitrate transport in Wax Lake Delta and six synthetic deltas suggest that nitrate removal may be intrinsically limited in river-dominated deltas to a small fraction of the incoming nitrate load. Removal increases with delta topset gradient, and smaller, high-sitting deltas remove more nitrate than larger, low-lying deltas. From a management standpoint, nitrate removal efficiency can be improved by designing river diversions to build steeper deltas. Steeper deltas are created by accessing coarser sediments in river diversion projects. However, manmade deltas alone cannot remove most nitrate discharging to the sea. Policy that addresses the nitrate load upstream is necessary to further reduce coastal nitrate loading.
