Book Synopsis Global Structural Stability of Flows on Open Surfaces by : Janina Kotus
Download or read book Global Structural Stability of Flows on Open Surfaces written by Janina Kotus and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1982 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph considers structural stability on open 2-manifolds in the [italic]C[superscript italic]r-Whitney topology. The statements of the theorems in this monograph are analogous to the statements of Peixoto's theorem for compact 2-manifolds. However, to obtain the proofs of these results for the noncompact case the authors provide a large measure of original mathematics.

Book Synopsis Meniscus Stability in Rotating Systems by : Yvonne Chen
Download or read book Meniscus Stability in Rotating Systems written by Yvonne Chen and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The knowledge of behavior of liquids with free surfaces to their surrounding gaseous phase in compensated gravity is essential to the development of tank systems for spacecrafts. In microgravity, the liquid behavior is dominated by capillary forces, which are used to position and redistribute liquid propellant in a desired way for the mission. The body forces occurring due to residual accelerations, which can be caused by spin during the ballistic flight phases, force the liquid to reorient towards a new equilibrium state of the free surface. Due to spin the liquid is driven away from the tank outlet and located along tank walls in partially filled tanks. To assure enough liquid fuel over the tank outlet, so-called Propellant Management Devices (PMD’s), are employed. A PMD is a static, usually metal structure, which either provides a passage way for a liquid in microgravity or stores a certain amount of liquid at a desired location. Some PMD’s are designed to be refillable in periods of microgravity due to openings in the outer housing or by a housing composed of perforated metallic sheets. These reservoirs are refilled in periods of compensated gravity in order to provide the required amount of liquid fuel for attitude control or other maneuverings. Relatively large disturbances, such as lateral accelerations and spin, can drive the liquid fuel out of the reservoir, resulting in malfunction of the device. During spilling, gas enters the device such that only a residual amount of liquid propellant can be kept in the reservoir. Moreover, the connection to the bulk liquid in the tank may be interrupted such that refilling of the reservoir is disrupted. Hence, a PMD with two parallel disks forming the inlet and a venting tube at the topmost point of the outer housing shall be designed such that its refillable structure is only filled with liquid without any gas or vapor being easily trapped during operations.

Book Synopsis Dynamic Stability of Structures by : George Herrmann
Download or read book Dynamic Stability of Structures written by George Herrmann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic Stability of Structures covers the proceedings of an International Conference on Dynamic Stability of Structures, held in Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois on October 18-20, 1965, jointly sponsored by the Air Force of Scientific Research and Northwestern University. The conference aims to delineate the various categories of dynamic stability phenomena. This book is organized into six sections encompassing 20 chapters that tackle general topics such as mathematical methods of analysis, physical phenomena, design applications in engineering, and reports of field research. The first two sections deal with the fundamentals, principles, and concept of dynamic stability, as well as an introduction to the use of computing machines as an aid in studying the motions of complicated dynamical systems. The succeeding two sections highlight the statistical aspects in the structural stability theory and certain problems of structural dynamic. These sections also look into the dynamic buckling of elastic structures and the buckling of long slender ships due to wave-induced whipping. The last two sections explore the stability and vibration problems of mechanical systems under harmonic excitation and the dynamic buckling under step loading. These sections also include discussions on the nonlinear dynamic response of shell-type structures and of a column under random loading, as well as Italian research in the field. Structural and mechanical engineers will find this book invaluable.
Book Synopsis Hillslope Hydrology and Stability by : Ning Lu
Download or read book Hillslope Hydrology and Stability written by Ning Lu and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landslides are caused by a failure of the mechanical balance within hillslopes. This balance is governed by two coupled physical processes: hydrological or subsurface flow and stress. The stabilizing strength of hillslope materials depends on effective stress, which is diminished by rainfall. This book presents a cutting-edge quantitative approach to understanding hydro-mechanical processes across variably saturated hillslope environments and to the study and prediction of rainfall-induced landslides. Topics covered include historic synthesis of hillslope geomorphology and hydrology, total and effective stress distributions, critical reviews of shear strength of hillslope materials and different bases for stability analysis. Exercises and homework problems are provided for students to engage with the theory in practice. This is an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers in hydrology, geomorphology, engineering geology, geotechnical engineering and geomechanics and for professionals in the fields of civil and environmental engineering and natural hazard analysis.
