From 90° peel tests of thin PMA films adsorbed on glass slides, it was found that the peel velocities varied linearly with applied force and force-velocity curves were dependent on film thickness. It was also observed that the molecular mass and silica content in the films affected the adhesion in thin PMA films"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book excerpt: "the present book will be of great value for both newcomers to the field and mature active researchers by serving as a coherent and timely introduction to some of the modern approaches, ideas, results, emerging understanding, and many open questions in this fascinating field of polymer glasses, supercooled liquids, and thin films" –Kenneth S. Schweizer, Morris Professor of Materials Science & Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (from the Foreword) This book provides a timely and comprehensive overview of molecular level insights into polymer glasses in confined geometries and under deformation. Polymer glasses have become ubiquitous to our daily life, from the polycarbonate eyeglass lenses on the end of our nose to large acrylic glass panes holding water in aquarium tanks, with advantages over glass in that they are lightweight and easy to manufacture, while remaining transparent and rigid. The contents include an introduction to the field, as well as state of the art investigations. Chapters delve into studies of commonalities across different types of glass formers (polymers, small molecules, colloids, and granular materials), which have enabled microscopic and molecular level frameworks to be developed. The authors show how glass formers are modeled across different systems, thereby leading to treatments for polymer glasses with first-principle based approaches and molecular level detail. Readers across disciplines will benefit from this topical overview summarizing the key areas of polymer glasses, alongside an introduction to the main principles and approaches.

Book excerpt: Polymer thin films are ubiquitous in a variety of everyday applications from cookware to packaging. Light can be used to both probe and manipulate the mobility of polymers in thin films. The first project involves the self-diffusion of poly(isobutyl methacrylate) (PiBMA) in thin films using fluorescence recovery after patterned photobleaching (FRAPP). PiBMA is an ideal polymer for this study because it exhibits a film thickness-independent glass transition temperature (Tg) on silicon oxide substrates in film thicknesses down to 14 nm. Since the diffusion coefficient of a polymer depends on the proximity of the experimental temperature to its Tg, nanoconfined diffusion can be measured without superimposed influence from Tg nanoconfinement effects. In this study, self-diffusion of PiBMA parallel to the confining interfaces was found to be film thickness independent to ~30 nm. The reason for the film thickness independence of the Tg of PiBMA is the balance between enhanced mobility at the free interface and hydrogen bonding with the substrate. However, when hydroxyls on the substrate are masked, the Tg of PiBMA decreases with decreasing film thickness. In this case, the diffusion coefficient increases with decreasing film thickness in a way consistent with additional distance from Tg. The second project involves a new approach for creating topographic patterns in thin films via the Marangoni effect, which describes how small variations in surface energy can promote dramatic movement of fluids. Topographic patterns created using this method are potentially useful in a variety of applications, such as the creation of soft lithography stamps. Using a photomask, surface energy gradients can be patterned into solid polymer films. Upon heating the polymer film to a liquid state the Marangoni effect causes the polymer to flow creating three-dimensional topography. This technique was first demonstrated in polystyrene, which undergoes a partial dehydrogenation of the polymer backbone upon photoexposure. However, as exposed and unexposed regions inter-diffuse the topographic features decay. A solution to this problem is to use two orthogonally acting photosensitizers in the polymer film, one for topography creation, and the other for cross-linking which stabilizes the topography at high temperature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer interfaces are critical for many technological and industrial applications in thin films including microelectronics, packaging, automotive coatings and sensors. The structure and architecture of interfaces in thin films and bulk polymeric systems can be exceedingly complex. In thin films, the technological drive to diminish film thickness while simultaneously enhancing homogeneity, stability and adhesion, is a demanding challenge driving research in newer areas of nanofilled and controlled nanostructured and nanopatterned materials. Tailoring surface and interfacial properties is equally important for new developments in the traditional fields of bulk polymer blends, adhesion and wetting. There is a need to develop an understanding of interfacial phenomena with the ultimate goal of establishing structure-property relationships with quantitative predictive capabilities and this book discusses these challenges. Topics include: block copolymer films; theory, simulations and dynamics; polymer interfaces and thin films; adhesion and mechanical properties; self-assembly by polymeric films; self-assembly and electronic properties; lithographic, electronic properties; and nanoparticulate-filled films.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book bridges disparate fields in an exploration of the phenomena and applications surrounding molecular mobility in glassy materials experiencing inelastic deformation. The subjects of plastic deformation and polymer motion/interdiffusion currently belong to the two different fields of continuum mechanics and polymer physics, respectively. However, molecular motion associated with plastic deformation is a key ingredient to gain fundamental understanding, both at the macroscopic and microscopic level. This short monograph provides necessary background in the aforementioned fields before addressing the topic of molecular mobility accompanied by macroscopic inelastic deformation in an accessible and easy-to-understand manner. A new phenomenon of solid-state deformation-induced bonding in polymers is discussed in detail, along with some broad implications in several manufacturing sectors. Open questions pertaining to mechanisms, mechanics, and modeling of deformation-induced bonding in polymers are presented. The book’s clear language and careful explanations will speak to readers of diverse backgrounds.
