Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book intended for shop use tries to familiarize the reader with the peculiari ties of a hardening method which due to its many advantages is now in use, many shops. A general knowledge of the principles of hardening and heat treating is presumed. Introduction 1. The name of the process. Flame hardening is a method derived from the old quench hardening and is used for the surface hardening of heat treatable steels. Flame hardening is so named in analogy to flame cutting as the use of a flame is a distinctive feature of this process as opposed to the use of a furnace. 2. Characteristics of flame hardening. In flame hardening the area to be 6 hardened is heated with a burner of large heat capacity (approx. 0.5 · 10 kcaljhr/ meter of flame lengths or 50,000 BTUfhr/inch of flame length) supplied with a mixture of fuel gas and oxygen. The hardening temperature is thus reached in so short a time at the surface that a heat jam is created, that is, more heat is supplied to the surface than can be dissipated to the interior of the workpiece. As the querr ehing takes place immediately after the heating the penetration of the heat to greater depth is prevented and only the outer layer subject to wear is hardened. The core of the workpiece remains unaffected by this heat treatment in cantrast to the other hardening methods where the entire piece is through heated in a furnace.

Download or read book Carburizing written by Geoffrey Parrish and published by ASM International. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Based on his training in metallurgy and experience in a large British gear manufacturing company, Parrish reviews the microstructural features of metal products that have been carbon case-hardened, and the influence of those features on the more important material properties. He is not concerned with the carbonizing process at all. He primarily addresses students of engineering and ferrous metallurgy, but also stress and design engineers who might want to understand more fully the specifications of the materials they are considering for their designs. He wrote the eight articles to summarize the field's literature of the early 1970s for his own convenience, but at invitation, published them as a series in the Heat Treatment of Metals during 1967-77, and collected them for a first edition of the volume in 1980. Book Synopsis Steel Heat Treatment by : George E. Totten
Download or read book Steel Heat Treatment written by George E. Totten and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-09-28 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of two self-contained volumes belonging to the newly revised Steel Heat Treatment Handbook, Second Edition, this book examines the behavior and processes involved in modern steel heat treatment applications. Steel Heat Treatment: Metallurgy and Technologies presents the principles that form the basis of heat treatment processes while incorporating detailed descriptions of advances emerging since the 1997 publication of the first edition. Revised, updated, and expanded, this book ensures up-to-date and thorough discussions of how specific heat treatment processes and different alloy elements affect the structure and the classification and mechanisms of steel transformation, distortion of properties of steel alloys. The book includes entirely new chapters on heat-treated components, and the treatment of tool steels, stainless steels, and powder metallurgy steel components. Steel Heat Treatment: Metallurgy and Technologies provides a focused resource for everyday use by advanced students and practitioners in metallurgy, process design, heat treatment, and mechanical and materials engineering.

Book Synopsis History, Developments and Trends in the Heat Treatment of Steel by : Peter Jurči
Download or read book History, Developments and Trends in the Heat Treatment of Steel written by Peter Jurči and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steels and their heat treatment are still very important in modern industry because most industrial components are made from these materials. The proper choice of steel grades along with their suitable processing makes it possible to reduce the weight of the components, which is closely related to energy and fuel savings. This has decisive importance in branches such as the automotive, transport, consumer industries. A great number of novel heat- and surface-treatment techniques have been developed over the past three decades. These techniques involve, for example, vacuum treatment, sub-zero treatment, laser/electron beam surface hardening and alloying, low-pressure carburizing and nitriding, and physical vapour deposition. This Special Issue contains a collection of original research articles on not only advanced heat-treatment techniques—carburizing and sub-zero treatments—but also on the microstructure–property relationships in different ferrous alloys.
Book Synopsis Heat-treatment of Steel by : Erik Oberg
Download or read book Heat-treatment of Steel written by Erik Oberg and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1914 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amply illustrated and deeply detailed, this classic guide details the creation of grades of steel via heat treatments. It offers fascinating insight into metal manufacturing processes. Since this guidebook was published in 1914, it carries a certain historic value; at the time, the United States economy was undergoing industrialization. Steel was in high demand, and the technology behind its manufacture was improved upon greatly. The metal's importance could not be understated; the expanding rail networks, new multistory constructions, plus tools and factory machines all required huge quantities of quality metal. As we learn, steel is not a simple product: various grades must be achieved via subtle variations in the heat and techniques applied during its manufacture. To articulate his points, the author appends over ninety charts and diagrams of equipment. Together these show how the furnaces work, and how the hardness of the metal is varied to meet strict specifications. Certain intense processes receive their own chapter, such as steel for machine tools and the use of the electric furnace, plus alloys and the testing of the finished products. For its breadth of detail and superb understanding, Erik Oberg's work remains readable over a century since its original publication.
