Book excerpt: U.R. Ananthamurthy (1932-2014), author of Samskara and such other contemporary Indian classics, wrote in Kannada. Born in the heart of the Western Ghats, he grew up in an atmosphere steeped in Vedic thought. Suragi is his autobiographical work where he recounts how he grappled with questions of religion and secularism, orthodoxy and modernity, authoritarianism, and democracy. Drawing from Indian thought, he developed the concept of the critical insider, arguing that criticism of a culture becomes genuine and worthy of acceptance when it comes from one living within it. His evocative writing portrayed relationships shaped by the flux of contemporary India. He won the highest literary honours in India, including the Jnanpith, and was shortlisted for the Booker prize. He headed the National Book Trust and Sahitya Akademi, and served as vice-chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. Travelling across the world, Ananthamurthy served as a cultural ambassador who represented India through its ideas and metaphors. He did not shy away from unpopular stands, and remained a daring writer and provocateur till the very end. Suragi tells the story of his life. 'Suragi' is the flower that leaves behind a sweet fragrance long after its freshness is no more.

Book excerpt: Saakshi uses the Puranas and Vedanta as well as Gandhian concepts to discuss the meaning of truth and its distortions through greed, sexuality and desire. Overcome by guilt at having committed perjury in court, in a murder trial, Parameshwarayya, a village elder, commits suicide. Yama, the god of death and righteousness, affords him the privilege of presenting his case himself. Thereafter, he commands Parameshwarayya to return to earth in spiritual form to witness, but not to intervene, in subsequent events. Parameshwarayya observes his daughter Savitri, son Ramakrishna, son-in-law Satyappa, the woman Lakkoo and the sensitive Dr Hasheem as they are confronted by difficult decisions and revelations, which cause them to look inward and attempt an appraisal of their lives and values. Bhyrappa’s portrayal of the greedy Nagappa, who grudges his only grandson the rice he eats and the arrogant, selfish and lustful Manjayya creates indelible impressions on the mind. This powerful novel questions what it means to be a witness—in a courtroom, before the gods, to the lives of others, or finally to one’s self.

This book was released on 2024-05-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has abundant water resources including rivers, canals, ponds, lakes, reservoirs, upland lakes, and floodplain wetlands covering over 5. [Author]8 percent of the country. [Author] These environments harbour a rich fish fauna of 1 035 species that constitutes the basis for the inland fisheries sector, which annually produces 2 144 452 tonnes of fish – if enhanced and culture-based fisheries are included – corresponding to 21 percent of total fish production. [Author] Rivers like the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Barak, alongside floodplain wetlands, play crucial roles, especially in the east and northeast. [Author] Lakes are abundant in upland areas. [Author] Reservoirs cover over 1 percent of India's land and hold untapped potential for fisheries development. [Author] Traditionally, fishing in inland water bodies has been a small-scale or subsistence activity. [Author] Fishing practices, crafts and gear used in inland fisheries are still traditional. [Author] Cooperative societies are present in reservoirs and wetlands giving fishers better bargaining power with traders and better prices for the fish. [Author] Inland fisheries are imperative for poverty alleviation, food security, gender empowerment, cultural services, ecosystem function, and biodiversity, and are important for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. [Author] Important threats to inland fisheries include water scarcity, habitat loss, pollution, climate change and invasive species. [Author] However, several major river conservation programmes have been initiated. [Author] The collection of inland fishery catch statistics remains weak and production appears to be significantly under-reported in many states. [Author] A simplified method for defining water bodies and estimating catch is proposed and all States have been advised to follow the same definition for water bodies. [Author]
