Book Synopsis Indian Reservations by : Confederation of American Indians
Download or read book Indian Reservations written by Confederation of American Indians and published by Jefferson, N.C. : McFarland. This book was released on 1986 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major questions have always existed concerning the role and status of Indian tribes and Indian peoples within the fabric of life in the United States. There is a relatively consistent body of law whose origins flow from precolonial America to the present day. This body of law is neither well-known nor well-understood by the American Public. Federal Indian law - or, more accurately, United States constitutional law concerning Indian tribes and individuals - is unique and separate from the rest of American jurisprudence. Analogies to general constitutional law, civil right law, public land law, and the like are misleading and often erroneous. Indian law is distinct. It encompassed Western European international law, specific provisions of the United States Constitution, precolonial treaties, treaties of the United States, an entire volume of the United States Code, and numerous decisions of the United States Supreme Court and lower federal courts.

Download or read book Rich Indians written by Alexandra Harmon and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-10-25 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before lucrative tribal casinos sparked controversy, Native Americans amassed other wealth that provoked intense debate about the desirability, morality, and compatibility of Indian and non-Indian economic practices. Alexandra Harmon examines seven such instances of Indian affluence and the dilemmas they presented both for Native Americans and for Euro-Americans--dilemmas rooted in the colonial origins of the modern American economy. Harmon's study not only compels us to look beyond stereotypes of greedy whites and poor Indians, but also convincingly demonstrates that Indians deserve a prominent place in American economic history and in the history of American ideas.
Download or read book Reserved! written by Rajeev Dhavan and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affrmattive action through exclusive quotas for india's disadvantage in public services and education has caused strikes, protests and riots in India. Parliament and the Supreme Court echoed divergent solutions resulting in dramatic clashes between Parliament and the courts. Earlier, bitter controversies between courts and Parliament in the Nehru era were over land reform (1950-67), and Mrs. Gandhi's era, it was over parlimentary sovereignty(1967-77). This book is about the third major crisis (1995-2008) over 'quota reservations' in the civil services and education.
Book Synopsis Imperfect Victories by : Mark R. Scherer
Download or read book Imperfect Victories written by Mark R. Scherer and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Omaha Tribe of Nebraska has borne more than its fair share of the burden created by the federal government’s wildly vacillating Indian policy. Mark R. Scherer’s Imperfect Victories provides a detailed examination of the Omahas’ tenacious efforts to overcome the damaging effects of shifting directions in federal policy during the last fifty years. The Omahas’ struggles are particularly significant because the tribe often bore the initial impact of experimental legislation that would later be implemented nationally. Scherer details the disastrous consequences of postwar federal legislation that transferred control over Indian affairs to state authorities as a precursor to the wholesale termination of Indian tribalism. The legislation brought jurisdictional turmoil to the Omaha reservation and placed the Omahas in chronic conflict with local law enforcement agencies. As the tribe fought to become the first Indian group in the nation to escape the effects of that law through retrocession, they waged equally notable struggles for the redress of past wrongs with the Indian Claims Commission and in the federal courts. Scherer demonstrates that the Omahas’ successes in those campaigns have been at best imperfect victories, coming only after years of hardship and failing to eliminate many underlying tensions and problems.
