Book excerpt: For most supply chains, cost reduction is imperative to long-term survival. Yet identifying the costs that can be eliminated – and then doing so effectively – can prove impossible without the right method. This book introduces the same process the author has used to save companies like IBM, Kodak, and DuPont billions of dollars, simply by harnessing the knowledge of suppliers. Using real-life case studies and examples, the book takes readers step-by-step through the process, showing them how to move beyond negotiation and: * identify critical costs in the supply chain * measure secondary and tertiary costs * develop strategic options * reduce, change, or eliminate activities that produce costs * implement an action plan * verify the plan with cost monitors * continually improve and modify the process The book gives readers everything they need to implement this powerful system, and bring genuine and permanent savings to their company

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Companies more and more compete as integrated supply chains rather than as individual firms. Success of the entire supply chain (SC) determines the economic well-being of the individual company. With management attention shifting to supply chains, the role of management accounting (MAC) naturally must extend to the cross-company layer as well. MAC can make a significant contribution to SC success, but is faced with a multitude of problems and challenges when trying to do so. Students both in supply chain management (SCM) or management accounting (MAC) respectively, are typically not familiarized with these issues. There is still a clear gap in higher education teaching when it comes to management accounting in a cross-company setting. This textbook wants to fill the gap. It targets students who are already familiar with the fundamentals of accounting and now want to extend their expertise in the field of cross-company (or network) management accounting – with supply chains being the typical case in point. Practitioners might draw valuable insights from the text as well. This textbook has been developed for university courses conducted in English language, especially in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Book excerpt: Proven Solutions for Improving Supply Chain Performance is a collection of about 175 descriptions of scientific management studies in the management of supply chains. Each one of the descriptions of the scientific studies is presented in readable and understandable form for individuals who probably have not had the statistical and scientific education and training to fully understand the underlying studies. The book is significantly different from the popular management literature, which is generally based on “armchair” theories that have little basis on fact, and seldom have been scientifically verified. Although the book is targeted for the supply chain manager/administrator, it can also be used as a supplementary reader in such courses as Operations Management, Service Systems Management, Manufacturing Management, Purchasing Management, and, of course, in Supply Chain Management courses.

Book excerpt: Supply chain management is emerging as one of the most powerful logistics management concepts for improving performance across the entire logistics network. Companies that have already streamlined their internal business process are now working to realise further savings by improving the external business relationships within the more and more complex, linked value-adding business processes in logistics networks. Although the benefits of SCM are well-known in industry, until now companies have only put this concept into practice in a limited way. Therefore, the newly developed integral model of collaborative performance measurement in this book will make a contribution towards easing and supporting improvements in supply chain management as well as giving specific guidelines for its implementation. Furthermore, the author provides newly developed key performance indicators that enable the measurement of the performance of co-operation across the extended enterprise in a supply chain environment. Based on case studies, the integral model, in close connection to the SCOR model, was applied and has proven its applicability in industrial practice. This book presents a rich variety of concepts and methods for industrial engineers, business managers, engineers and consultants as well as success stories in supply chain management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within global and rapidly changing environments, cooperation and networking offer possibilities for sharing costs and risks, as well as keeping up with constantly renewed information from outside the firms' boundaries. In line with this, an effective management control of supply chain processes seems to be relevant to compete against other supply chains and to get the required information. In this context, an implementation of a management control institution for inter-firm relations, like a supply chain management control (SCMC), that provides relevant qualitative and quantitative data to manage supply chains reflects an important issue. However, a comprehensive approach with regard to the management control of the entire supply chain and how it can be fulfilled has received scant attention in prior research. The aim of this thesis is therefore to analyze management control systems in global supply chains by means of a mixed methods design with special regard to functional, institutional and instrumental issues. In this context, qualitative data are combined with theoretical insights to develop an empirical model which is tested by means of a quantitative study. Following this, insights into management control aspects, organization of the supply chain management control, management control mechanisms, and the integration of suppliers are provided.
