Book Synopsis Diffuser Efficiency and Flow Process of Supersonic Wind Tunnels with Free Jet Test Section by : Rudolf Hermann

This book was released on 1950 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wind tunnel arrangement under consideration, the air leaves the Laval nozzle as a free jet and is recaptured by the diffuser, which is of the convergent-divergent design. A theoretical analysis of the flow process through this type of supersonic wind tunnel is presented and the diffuser efficiency is calculated for the case of equilibrium between test chamber pressure and pressure in the nozzle exit, assuming one-dimensional, in viscous, steady flow. Using the basic equations of continuity, energy and momentum flux through a bounding surface, an exact solution of the problem is obtained, which is applicable up to Mach number infinite. One of the basic results is, that in the recapturing zone of the diffuser a transition occurs from supersonic to subsonic flow, which is followed by an acceleration in the convergent portion up to sonic velocity at the second throat. The transition is not a normal shock and involves a total pressure loss greater than that of a normal shock at the test section Mach number. A mathematical solution with supersonic velocity after the transition process has no physical existence. A comprehensive comparison of the analytical results with available experiments in supersonic wind tunnels up to Mach number 4.4 regarding diffuser efficiency and second throat area shows good agreement.

Book Synopsis Experimental Aerodynamics by : Bruno Chanetz
Download or read book Experimental Aerodynamics written by Bruno Chanetz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents experimental techniques in the field of aerodynamics, a discipline that is essential in numerous areas, such as the design of aerial and ground vehicles and engines, the production of energy, and understanding the wind resistance of buildings. Aerodynamics is not only concerned with improving the performance and comfort of vehicles, but also with reducing their environmental impact. The book provides updated information on the experimental and technical methods used by aerodynamicists, engineers and researchers. It describes the various types of wind tunnels – from subsonic to hypersonic – as well as the problems posed by their design and operation. The book also focuses on metrology, which has allowed us to gain a detailed understanding of the local properties of flows, and examines current developments toward creating a methodology combining experiments and numerical simulations: the computer-assisted wind tunnel. Lastly, it offers an overview of experimental aerodynamics based on a prospective vision of the discipline, and discusses potential futures challenges. The book can be used as a textbook for graduate courses in aerodynamics, typically offered to students of aerospace and mechanical engineering programs, and as a learning tool for professionals and engineers in the fields of aerodynamics, aeronautics and astronautics automobile.

Book Synopsis The Peenemünde Wind Tunnels by : Peter P. Wegener
Download or read book The Peenemünde Wind Tunnels written by Peter P. Wegener and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1943, on orders from the German Air Ministry, young physicist Peter P. Wegener left the Russian front and reported to the Baltic village of Peenemünde. His assignment was to work at the supersonic wind tunnels of the rocket laboratories of the German Army. Here Wernher von Braun led a team that developed the V-2, the world's first large rocket-powered guided missile, and laid much of the groundwork for postwar rocket development. In this fascinating book, Wegener recounts his experiences during Hitler's time, World War II, and his years at Peenemünde. He tells how he was working one night in August 1943 when the Allies bombed the laboratories, but left the wind tunnels undamaged. The tunnels were moved to Bavaria, and Wegener was ordered to follow in 1944. After the war, the tunnels were moved again--this time to the United States, accompanied by the author and other German scientists. Shortly before the end of the war, Wegener visited Germany's underground V-2 production plant to retrieve archival material on aerodynamics that had been stored in caves for safekeeping. He describes the appalling history of the concentration camps where SS guards watched over inmates who toiled underground in inhuman conditions and often did not survive. A photoessay enhances this remarkable memoir.
