Book excerpt: The research concerned a survey of existing literature on supersonic diffusers, and experimental study on pressure recovery of supersonic diffusers in a variety of facilities with a variety of configurations following a contoured Mach Number = 3 nozzle. The nozzle and test section were free of models and the diffusers were either of constant cross section (straight duct), or of variable cross section, and they were generally patterned to be representative of some classes of gasdynamic laser nozzles. The optimum pressure recovery of the operating facility and the minimum pressure recovery required to start supersonic flow at the nozzle end were determined. The facilities used were a small continuous operation supersonic wind tunnel and a Ludwieg tube operating as a blow down wind tunnel with a steady state in the millisecond region. Careful correlation with data from other facilities taken under different circumstances was performed, while a number of the results found were unique to the current investigation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report covers a literature survey on the status of present knowledge on supersonic diffusers. Three types of diffusers are examined: wind tunnel diffusers, ramjet inlets, and supersonic ejectors. No systematic study on wind tunnel diffusers has been found. The results obtained in specific studies, made in conjunction with the design and installation of a number of wind tunnels, show that 100% of normal shock recovery is obtained for M less than 10. Some systematic work exists for ramjet diffusers, with most of the attention being paid to external compression configurations. For supersonic ejectors, comprehensive studies have been made, and useful empirical design methods are available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic investigation was made of the gasdynamics of supersonic diffusers, in particular, diffusers applicable to gasdynamic or other types of flow lasers. The main conclusion was that almost all the research on supersonic diffusers was performed with specific application, namely a specific wind tunnel installation or an engine, in mind. Systematic studies on the gasdynamics of diffusers even of simple geometries were scarce, making it difficult, if not impossible, to extend existing work to other configurations. Despite the fact that some of the high Mach number wind tunnels operated with known unequilibrated internal modes, there was no research on nonequilibrium flow effects in diffusers in the literature consulted. Moreover, in most conventional wind tunnels, the cross-section of the test section is either circular or squarish. Consequently, most diffuser studies were concerned with circular, square, or rectangular cross-sections with comparable widths and heights, characterized by an aspect ratio, defined as the width to height ratio, of unity or close to unity.

Book excerpt: An experimental evaluation of wind tunnel performance has been conducted for the University of Minnesota by the Rosemount Aeronautical Laboratories within a test section Mach number range of 1.5 to 4.4. In order to evaluate the effect of the addition of various scavenge ducts to the basic wind tunnel configuration, the performance of a solid wall test section - adjustable diffuser combination was determined both with and without a scavenging duct present.

Book excerpt: This book is intended to be a valuable addition to students, engineers, scientists, industrialists, consultants and others providing greater insight into wind tunnel designs and their enormous research potential. It is a compilation of works from world experts on subsonic and supersonic wind tunnel designs, applicable to a diverse range of disciplines. The book is organised in two sections. The first section comprises of three chapters on various aspects of stationary and portable subsonic wind tunnel designs, followed by one chapter on supersonic wind tunnel and the final chapter discusses a method to address unsteadiness effects of fan blade rotation. The second section contains four chapters regarding wind tunnel applications across a multitude of engineering fields including civil, mechanical, chemical and environmental engineering.

Book excerpt: A diffuser of variable geometric shape was tested for pressure recovery at M = 1.9, 2.5, 2.8, and 4.9 in the continuous 18- x 18-cm Aerophysics tunnel no. 3. The diffuser consisted of a converging-diverging, 2-dimensional, variable-area duct. The opening of the diffuser throat and the location of the throat along the center line of the duct were varied systematically. The effect of closed or half-open test section on diffuser efficiency and that of a model in the air stream were investigated. Operating and starting pressure ratios of the wind tunnel were determined, and performance data of the diffuser are given for both cases. Pressure recoveries of the operating tunnel were obtained for optimum diffuser configuration with diffuser end-pressure ranging up to 1.8 times pitot pressure in the test section at M = 4.9. Also lower pressure ratios to start the tunnel than previously known were found. Using this diffuser, a continuous tunnel can be operated with less power, or an intermittent tunnel can run for a longer time, and they can be started with a smaller (closer to one) over-all pressure ratio. The pressure recoveries obtained in a half-open test section and with models in the stream are somewhat lower, but the performance of the diffuser is not seriously offset by those modifications.

Book excerpt: The results of an experimental study are given of the process of starting the diffuser of a supersonic wind tunnel with an Eiffels chamber, which has a conical nozzle with Mach number M=2.72, and cylindrical diffusers of different lengths and diameters. It is shown that the stabilization of flow in the diffuser is related to the formation of shock in the vicinity the attachment point of the jet.

Book excerpt: The Air Force has expressed interest in improving the efficiency of the Subsonic Aerodynamic Research Laboratory (SARL) wind tunnel. In a previous analysis of losses throughout the tunnel, it was found that approximately thirty percent of pressure losses through the tunnel occurred at the exit of the tunnel (Britcher, 2011). The use of alternative diffuser geometries in reducing pressure losses at the exit of the tunnel and the computation of their efficiency improvement with respect to the original tunnel geometry and with respect to each other for the SARL wind tunnel are the focus of this research. Three different diffuser geometries were evaluated numerically using both the SolidWorks Flow Simulation add-on, and ANSYS FLUENT. For each of these geometries, a scaled down model was manufactured to be used for experimental validation in future work. Both the full size and small scale numerical models were evaluated with an inlet velocity of sixty meters per second. As the nature of the flow at this point in the wind tunnel is not known, both a uniform and fully developed turbulent flow profiles were evaluated for each design, both for the small scale models and the full size models, to determine pressure losses with respect to the varying flow types entering the diffusers. This research seeks to determine the effects of these different geometries on the flow downstream of the exit, and the possible energy savings associated with each design. In addition, it seeks to compare the numerical results obtained from both SolidWorks Flow Simulation and ANSYS FLUENT.
