Book excerpt: To accomplish this goal, two additional models were constructed each having only one of the additional geometrical features, either diverging side walls or the ramp floor. Subsequently it was determined that biggest impact on changing the cavity acoustics came from the diverging side walls of the complex cavity. In addition to testing the effect of cavity geometry, a microjet control technique was adapted to reduce the pressure loads within the highly three-dimensional cavity. An array consisting of eight 400micrometer diameter jets was used, and with minimal mass flow, reductions of both the tonal amplitudes and broadband levels was possible. Along with testing on the very small scale, experiments were conducted with the same complex geometry nearly 10 times larger. Two major results were found: first the baseline, no control, acoustics of both the large and small models were found to scale quite well, moreover the microjet control technique was found to be similarly effective one the larger scale but with better efficiency. These results give good confidence that the aero-acoustic characteristics on a very small scale, as presented in this research, can be used to accurately model full scale applications, and the further development of cavity control techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of supersonic cavity flows is of interest both from fundamental fluid dynamics and practical perspectives. The complex nature of this flowfield, consisting of compressible shear layers, compression/expansion waves, and fluid-acoustic interactions, makes it a rich problem to study. A detailed experimental study of supersonic flow (M=1.5 to 2) over a range of three-dimensional rectangular cavities (L/D=1 to 5.2) was conducted. The measurements included unsteady surface pressure measurements, particle image velocimetry, and flow visualization using shadowgraph and schlieren. Large-scale structures in the shear layer and a large recirculation zone in the cavity was observed. Spatial and temporal mode switching was also observed, the nature being different for short and long cavities. The shear layer characteristics of the two cavities are very different in term of curvature and growth. Supersonic microjets were used at the leading edge of the cavities to suppress the resonance in the flow. With a minimal mass flux (0.15%), the activation of microjets led to a large reduction in cavity tones (20 dB) and overall sound pressure levels (9dB). In addition, the microjet injection enhanced the shear layer mixing and reduced the velocity fluctuation in the cavities. The significant reductions together with the low mass flux requirements make this a potentially viable technique for full-scale, practical applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report progress in our ongoing effort to compute and understand the three-dimensional instabilities (resonance) of open cavity flows from incompressible to supersonic speeds. In particular, our work is aimed at regimes where significant interactions occur between the shear layer spanning the cavity and the recirculating flow within the cavity, as encountered in many experiments and numerical simulations reported in the literature. Complementary methodologies for extracting information about global instabilities (including their receptivity and optimal control) of two- and three-dimensional cavity flows have been developed. We present here some sample calculations that show that for a low Mach number cavity with a length-to-depth ratio of two, the two-dimensional steady flow is unstable to three-dimensional (spanwise homogeneous) disturbances that consist of spanwise modulation of the recirculating vortex interior to the cavity. The oscillations are unstable over a narrow band of spanwise wavelengths comparable to the cavity depth. They are oscillatory in time, but with a very slow frequency that is about ten times slower than the incipient two-dimensional Rossiter instability. Instability seems to be related to cellular patterns observed in surface streamline patterns on cavity bottoms in some previous experiments.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computations of three-dimensional unsteady supersonic cavity flow are performed for a free-stream Mach number of 1.2. Two cavity geometries are considered: (i) a simple rectangular cavity of length-to-depth (L/D) and length-to-width (L/W) ratios of 4.5, and (ii) a cavity with a 450 ramp attached to the downstream wall of the simple rectangular cavity. Two flow models for computing the cavity flow field are assessed: (a) the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with a kappa-omega- turbulence model for the whole flow field, and (b) a combination of an inviscid flow model using the Euler equations for the domain outside the boundary layer and the RANS model for the boundary layer. The structures of the flow fields resulting from the different models are observed. The effect of the different downstream geometries is assessed.

Book excerpt: A good understanding of turbulent compressible flows is essential to the design and operation of high-speed vehicles. Such flows occur, for example, in the external flow over the surfaces of supersonic aircraft, and in the internal flow through the engines. Our ability to predict the aerodynamic lift, drag, propulsion and maneuverability of high-speed vehicles is crucially dependent on our knowledge of turbulent shear layers, and our understanding of their behavior in the presence of shock waves and regions of changing pressure. Turbulent Shear Layers in Supersonic Flow provides a comprehensive introduction to the field, and helps provide a basis for future work in this area. Wherever possible we use the available experimental work, and the results from numerical simulations to illustrate and develop a physical understanding of turbulent compressible flows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this Special Course was to provide a status report on our understanding and ability to predict three-dimensional compressible flows including the complex effects of flow separation. Stimulation for this course arose from a variety of projects underway or receiving strong consideration in many countries: the next-generation supersonic transport, HERMES, the National Aerospace Plane, HOTOL, SANGER, the 'ORIENT EXPRESS' etc. An overview presentation of the requirements for this technology - showing applications and problem areas - set the stage for the course. This was followed by two lectures which discussed topics that are basic to all that followed. First, the capabilities and limitations of computational fluid dynamics to describe these complex flows was addressed; and second a review of turbulence models appropriate to compressible flows was presented. The next four lectures concentrated on a series of generic shock-shock boundary-layer interaction problems which may be viewed as either a means to understand flow physics or as building blocks for vehicle design. The course closed with a discussion on how the chemical reactions present in highly hypersonic flows influence three- dimensional hypersonic flows fields. Keywords: Supersonic flow; Hypersonic flow; Three dimensional flow; Boundary layer separation; Computation; Turbulence.

Book excerpt: These proceedings primarily focus on advances in the theory, experiments, and numerical simulations of turbulence in the contexts of flow-induced vibration and noise, as well as their control. Fluid-related structural vibration and noise problems are often encountered in many engineering fields, increasingly making them a cause for concern. The FSSIC conference, held on 5-9 July 2015 in Perth, featured prominent keynote speakers such as John Kim, Nigel Peake, Song Fu and Colin Hansen, as well as talks on a broad range of topics: turbulence, fluid-structure interaction, fluid-related noise and the control/management aspects of these research areas, many of which are clearly interdisciplinary in nature. It provided a forum for academics, scientists and engineers working in all branches of Fluid-Structure-Sound Interactions and Control (FSSIC) to exchange and share the latest developments, ideas and advances, bringing them together researchers from East and West to push forward the frontiers of FSSIC, ensuring that the proceedings will be of interest to a broad engineering community.

An outline is given covering the coupling scheme and the use of the resulting Fortran computer code.

Book excerpt: The thrust of modern research on turbulence in fluids is concerned with coherent structures and modelling. Riblets have been shown to reduce drag, and the papers presented in this volume tackle the main question of the mechanism responsible for this behaviour in turbulent flow. The contributions in this volume were presented at the Sixth Drag Reduction Meeting held at Eindhoven during November 1991. This volume will be a useful reference work for engineers, physicists and applied mathematicians interested in the topic of fluid turbulence.
