The Spitfire prototype, designed by Supermarine¿s Chief Designer R.J. Mitchell, first flew in 1936. By the time the Battle of Britain began in earnest, nineteen Spitfire squadrons were available to the RAF. Their pilots were most often tasked with engaging Luftwaffe fighters, including the Bf-109. With its superior maneuverability, it proved more than a match. This pilot¿s flight operating handbook, for the Model IIa and IIb, was originally produced by the Royal Air Force during World War II. It has been slightly reformatted but is reproduced in its entirety. It provides a fascinating view inside the cockpit of one of history¿s great planes.

Many different variants were produced including the Seafire naval fighter. Nineteen Spitfire squadrons were available to the R.A.F. by the fall of 1940, when the Battle of Britain began in earnest. Book excerpt: The XF-11 was originally conceived as a dedicated reconnaissance aircraft, capable of high-speed penetration of enemy defenses. The plane's design benefitted from research work by its builder, the brilliant and sometimes mercurial Howard Hughes. Inspired by an experimental aircraft he had created known as the DX-2, Hughes' XF-11 was a twin-engine, twin-boom, tricycle gear monoplane that featured a pressurized nacelle for its crew and 28-cylinder engines with contra-rotating props. Hughes piloted the XF-11 on its maiden flight, and was nearly killed when one of the props reversed its pitch and the plane crashed. After Hughes recovered from his injuries, he piloted a second prototype outfitted with conventional props. By then the Air Force had already made up its mind: the XF-11 would never enter service. Originally printed by Hughes and the Air Force this handbook provides a fascinating glimpse inside the cockpit of this plane. This manual is declassified. Book excerpt: Stearman's Kaydet biplane first flew in 1934, and in 1935 the U.S. Navy acquired the aircraft for use as trainers. Within a year the U.S. Army Air Corps followed suit, buying 26 of the airplanes from Boeing (which had acquired Stearman in 1934). Designated the "Model 75," the Army dubbed the two-seat plane the PT-13 and the Navy the NS. With war looming on the horizon, the need for trainers became pronounced; orders in 1940 topped 3500 airframes. By conflict's end in 1945, over 10,000 were built. The Kaydets were simple, rugged aircraft equipped with a radial engine, fabric-covered wooden wings, and single-leg landing gear. The fuselage, which was also fabric-covered, was built of steel. Most models were equipped with either the Lycoming R-680 (PT-13) or Continental R-670 (PT-17) engine, producing a top speed of 124 mph with a 505-mile range. A 255-hp model received the designation PT-18. The Kaydet continued to fly in the post-WWII era as a trainer and cropduster. Approximately 1,000 "Stearmans" are still in service in the present day. Originally created during WWII by the U.S. Navy and Army Air Forces, this pilot manual was standard issue to all cadets. It is reproduced here in its entirety.

The plane featured a mid-engine design, intended to allow it to carry a lethal 37mm cannon in the nose. An all-metal, low-wing design, the P-39 was the first fighter to feature tricycle landing gear. The plane debuted in 1939, and proved impressive in tests. Yet the aircraft lacked a large fuel capacity that limited range, and pilots learned that its performance dropped off markedly at altitudes above 17,000 feet. Despite this, over 9,500 P-39s were built. Almost half were sent to the USSR, where Soviet pilots, flying low-level attack missions, achieved devastating results. Ace Alexander Pokryshkin flew the plane exclusively and scored nearly 60 kills. Originally printed by the USAAF and the RAF, this handbook provides a fascinating glimpse inside the cockpit of this warbird. Originally classified ¿Restricted¿, the manual was de-classified and is here reprinted in book form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grumman F4F Wildcat was the primary Marine Corps and U.S. Navy fighter aircraft during the opening year of WWII. Although the Japanese Zero outperformed it, Wildcat pilots more than held their own during the crucial battles at Coral Sea and Midway. Almost 8,000 Wildcats were built during the war, many of them by General Motors. The G.M. versions, designated FM-1 and later the improved FM-2, entered service after the faster Corsairs and Hellcats were deployed. As a result most FMs flew from escort carriers, most notably during the Battle off Samar where Wildcats helped turn back the Japanese fleet. Originally printed by Grumman and the U.S. Navy, this FM-2 flight operating handbook taught pilots everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit. Once classified "Restricted," the manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. This affordable facsimile has been slightly reformatted.
